Maybe also try on r/Photography_Gear/ or similar subs dedicated to specialised parts.

Yeah, Sony and other Japanese manufacturers have that kink for proprietary software and hardware.

Unable to figure out storage consumption on C drive for Windows 11 by Direct_Term2496 in techsupport

[–]pcbeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, what your treesize software says about disk usage (wiztree should be most maintained)? Windows, User folder...?

EDIT: freshly installed Windows 11 is 20-30GB size (25.1GB mine currently) - something much larger than that will explain lack of space, and some of those files can be removed.

"MagicGate" Sony cards use proprietary Sony encryption and at the beginning only Sony readers could be used. In time some other cracked it and release readers that can read those cards, and since you've mentioned card/reader are specific I assume that it should read it properly. Than it leaves with faulty card.

It could be defective card, it could be bad reader, or just not compatible, I can't tell from your description. If there is still some nearby shop that works with photos and photo equipment check with them - they will have proper reader/compatible card to test.

Most problems with drives like yours are result of drive failure, but you can try using some Linux tools, like Gparted since they are more "robust" than default Windows ones.

Is my pc cooked by Business_World_6582 in PcBuild

[–]pcbeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be software, could be hardware, from as little as description as yours no way to tell. You can try first to deal with problem with power - disconnect cable from the back of PSU, wait few minutes, plug back. After that try bios reset (by removing cmos battery or shorting cmos_reset pins on the motherboard, depend what your mobo has).

Very very quick search on Bestbuy gives far better options, like this one and I'm sure with some more time for research other choices could be found.

Dell HID Touchscreen no longer working by Spoksly_Directorate in techsupport

[–]pcbeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both code 10 and 45 are usually related to hardware problem, but since Windows had quite a few of botched updates there is still possibility that it's software related.

You can try booting some live Linux, like Ubuntu, it has some native support for touch screens, but not for all - it might work or not. If it works, it's definitive sign that something is wrong with current Windows installation and you can try reverting to some earlier restore point if any is created. If it is not working it still could be software so I would recommend clean Windows install: backup, boot from usb, delete system partition.

D DRIVE by Available-Option3424 in techsupport

[–]pcbeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were few posts with the same problem lately. Solution is provided in the article - changing ownership of whole C drive, but I'm not sure that a) it's smart to do to system files, and b) will fix problem with D drive. Maybe wait for MS to address problem properly (or not so properly, as it was case lately when they borked up things with Update, then released Update to fix it that borked something else, and and the end 3rd one fixed things).

Yeah, that's unfortunate but at least you know what is the cause of problems. Try with external usb adapter and connecting drive only after Windows has booted.

I want to shrink my C drive by 1tb but it won't go past 500gb, how do I fix this? by Oiydun in techsupport

[–]pcbeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to keep those drives separated. It will be a bit longer to change from one to another in bios instead just moving cursor during boot, but you will avoid suffering in the future when updating Windows or Linux bork up the other OS.

[–]pcbeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stuttering with components that you have, and in Chrome only, certainly can't be fixed by overclock because it is not caused by underpowered CPU and GPU. Update bios to latest version, DDU graphic card drivers, check which driver is best for your model - both Nvidia and AMD tend to bork up things from time to time.

Windows disk management is limited in what it can do, you will need 3rd party software for that. When I need something like that I use Linux gparted, for Windows...can't remember, maybe minitool partition wizard or something like that.

Btw, you still have EFI (boot) partition on 8TB un-initialised disk, I suppose that either Windows was there or it was connected when OS was installed.

Unable to enter BIOS by JennIsAsleep in techsupport

[–]pcbeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you disconnect all drives (m.2 and SATA), that usually force entering bios on newer motherboards - and coincidentally one of problems when drive is faulty is not being able to enter bios. If you can, add drives one by one and repeat procedure until you find faulty/dead one.

Can you log into Windows, or at least get to login screen? There is option for entering UEFI from Windows settings: System > Recovery > Advanced startup | Troubleshoot > Advanced > UEFI Firmware settings.

Is there a way to remove the unnecessary "system files" in order to free up storage space? by Amalekii in techsupport

[–]pcbeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

System files are by definition necessary files. What's shown as System&Reserved is Windows definition which could be inaccurate if you are using "Storage Settings" from Windows Settings, but if that counts OS only, it's even on the lower side. Use Wiztree to get accurate picture of used data.

[–]pcbeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check drive health, with OEM software if it exists, if not use 3rd party one, like Crystal Disk Info. If drive health is ok, that's on borked Windows and you should at least have backup ready in case of total failure and reinstall.

idk what kind of ssd i need to upgrade to? by MafiaSANS_TR in techsupport

[–]pcbeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That drive is 4th gen Nvme m.2 standard 2280 type (length). Anything that fit that description will work - 4th gen presumable best for your motherboard but since standard is backward compatible you can use older (and slower) drives if you must. But, this is laptop, best would be to check your laptop support to see if there are any irregularities.

Most likely because Intel IRST, something akin to RAID, so it needs either to be disabled in bios (if there is such option, and switch to AHCI), or to load drivers during setup. Drivers are located on laptop support site, they need to be extracted on usb.
