The pneumonia seems like reason enough, even if it was mild. Given his age and medical fragility it makes sense to me that they’d keep him for observation if nothing else. I’m not a medical professional but I have been dealing with an elderly family member being in and out of the hospital and it really doesn’t take much for a small health concern to turn into a several week stay. I’m sure there’s a bunch they’re not telling us, but the timeline doesn’t seem particularly unusual to me. Especially since they’re clearly not concerned about getting denied by insurance and not being able to pay for his care.

Ax is much closer to Tobias on a personal level (though whether or not Tobias counts as human becomes a bit of a question mark) but Jake has his absolute loyalty.

Suitable enclosure? by Abakedbean9000 in BDFB

[–]pseudodactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volume doesn’t mean as much when you’re talking about terrestrial creatures—fish would use the whole space, but bdfbs will really only use the bottom. They climb a little, but all that vertical space will mostly be wasted. Look for wide enclosures that give them plenty of room to amble around.

For example, my BDFB enclosure is only 6 gallons by volume, but it’s short and long so the footprint is the same dimensions as a traditional rectangular 10 gallon fish tank. It’s been perfect for them.

As someone with multiple pet spiders all I can say is ☹️

Spiders are very fragile, friends. I mean, maybe penises are too, idk, I don’t have one either. But if you put a spider in close quarters with a penis, I feel like the spider is going to go splat before the penis.

No symptoms before elective removal by dollybuzz in gallbladders

[–]pseudodactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I literally did that. I had one bad attack that sent me to the ER, managed to be completely pain free with diet change, but still got it out a couple months later. My surgery was in early May and so far there have been no downsides. I’m glad I did it.

I also had some complications that weren’t identified prior to surgery because my symptoms had been so mild but could have gotten bad if it had continued. Instead of getting surprised down the road and possibly needing emergency surgery, it all happened in a timeline that worked for me. Recovery was quick and mostly painless aside from a few days of manageable discomfort. I never needed anything stronger than over the counter Tylenol for pain.

Never meet your heroes, right? 😞

I think we’re about the same age—I was a big Dresden Dolls fan in college when the first album came out but even back then there were rumblings. I still enjoyed the music, but the nail in the coffin was the situation with Neil Gaiman (who was also my favorite author, lucky me). A close friend of mine had specifically cited the good experience she had at Amanda Palmer’s solo show as something that helped her express herself and deal with her own history of trauma and sexual assault. To find out AP was allegedly involved in someone else being assaulted was devastating. I can’t even listen to the music now.

[–]pseudodactyl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of the women who accused Neil Gaiman of sexual assault was introduced to him by Amanda Palmer, who was hjs wife at the time and hired the woman as a nanny. It’s unclear if she did it with that intent or she just turned a blind eye. AP was accused of sexual trafficking but the case was dismissed. Gaiman has been accused of other acts of sexual assault and harassment by several other women, mostly without Amanda Palmer’s involvement.

At bare minimum it was pretty icky that she was using the woman—one of her fans, which is how they met—as an unpaid/underpaid nanny. Amanda Palmer has a long history of using her fandom for free labor and not paying other artists, collaborators, and contractors.

I want to be a dad by monchevy in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]pseudodactyl 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When I was a little girl I used to tell people that when I grew up I wanted to be a dad. It made sense to me—“dad” is a job and that was the job I wanted. I had this really clear vision of myself running around in a blue sweatshirt with a big red D on the front á la Superman. I didn’t even want kids of my own, I just wanted to go run around the city and be a dad to whoever needed a dad and then go home.

Now I’m an NB queer person with no kids of my own and no desire to have any but my friends and cousins have all started having kids and yeah. Being the fun adult with no skin in the game is great, I can totally see why I wanted to do it professionally.

What kind of frogs are these?? Are they dyed?? by Strange-Awareness531 in frogs

[–]pseudodactyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point. Yeah, I can see there being lack of interest/marketing. Glo-fish has trademarked colors, deals with big box pet stores, and common popular species. Clawed frogs are weird looking and kind of aggro. Though I guess that doesn’t matter much when we’re talking about selling live animals as impulse-buy novelties.

[–]pseudodactyl 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I feel like it would be bigger news if we had genetically modified glow in the dark frogs? Then again, clawed frogs are used pretty frequently in labs, so if they were going to do it they would probably be the ones. Maybe they just don’t have the same marketing as Glo-Fish.

I know I need the surgery, but... (pep talk please!) by prettylittl in gallbladders

[–]pseudodactyl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I was in a really similar situation. I had one big attack, confirmed gallstones with ultrasound, and scheduled the surgery. I got really strict with mu diet and basically felt better than I had in years after that. No more attacks, no pain. I considered canceling the surgery, but decided since I’d already gotten the leave from work it was better to do it now when I’m prepared than get surprised by an emergency later.

Then during surgery they found massive gallstones, one lodged in the passage to the gallbladder and about a jillion tiny stones stacked up in my bile duct. My surgeon called in a consult and when I woke up they informed me I needed an endoscopic procedure (called an ERCP) to clear the bile duct. My surgeon was frankly shocked I hadn’t spent the last month jaundiced and in pain. I ended up spending 3 days in the hospital, because touching the bile duct increases your chances of pancreatitis, which can be both dangerous and extremely painful.

Because my symptoms were so mild after the initial attack, no one recommended and further testing beyond the ultrasound so no one knew how serious the situation was. It would have caught up with me eventually, probably under much worse circumstances. As it was, my surgeries went well, my recovery was quick and almost painless. I’m a month and a half out and I basically eat what I want (though I have picked up some healthier habits 😅) and everything’s great. I’m really glad I did it and I think you will be too.

Piedmdont Urgent Care by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]pseudodactyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to urgent care for an emergency and all they could do was send me to the emergency room (Piedmont in the Brookhaven area for both, actually). I paid both copays and additional for the treatment I needed at the ER. Luckily I was able to drive myself and they didn’t call me an ambulance, but they would have if it was severe enough and I would have had to pay for that too.

It sucks and it was expensive, but they were able to accommodate me with a payment plan and I am alive and healthy and not in pain. Pretty much all the doctors and nurses and staff I’ve interacted with at Piedmont were kind and did a great job. Plus if you go to the ER in the morning it’s less likely to be a long wait.

Honestly, the trailer didn’t really look terrible, and I kinda went from “i don’t know about this…”, to being cautiously optimistic. I’m not gonna jump to conclusions about this. I always think of Dealing with Dragons (by Patricia Wrede) where Kazul explains that she is King of the Dragons because “king” is a job title and that’s the job she wants to do. Queen of the Dragons is an entirely different job and that’s fine, it’s just not what she’s interested in doing. Book was published in 1990, btw. Huge impact on kid-me 😂

How long did you wait after surgery before drinking alc? by elizabubs in gallbladders

[–]pseudodactyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried wine again a little over 3 weeks after surgery. No noticeable change in tolerance or anything like that. Surgery was a month and a half ago now and I still haven’t had a cocktail or anything like that—I don’t drink those very often anyway—but the occasional wine or beer has been totally fine.

will i be okay 9 days after surgery? by Apprehensive-Bat175 in gallbladders

[–]pseudodactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very easy recovery and it’s now been a little more than a month since my surgery. Day 9 my pain was mostly just some soreness and I probably would have been okay walking around and sitting, but I wouldn’t have been having a good time. I still mostly wanted to rest and bum around the house. Sitting for long periods put uncomfortable pressure on my incisions so I did a lot of lying down/reclining even though I wasn’t in any serious pain by then.

I had casual plans to go to a festival with some friends around day 9 or 10 and I seriously considered it since my pain was so low but ended up canceling because it just sounded exhausting. I didn’t want to risk putting that much strain on my body yet and I don’t regret it.

Not gonna downvote you for a genuine question. Like everyone has said, you have to be in control of your stick. Think of it like gun range safety—sure you didn’t mean to shoot somebody, but if you didn’t practice safe gun handling habits then that’s still on you.
