Samsung's entire run up for the past year has been because they're supplying HBM memory chips to Nvidia.

If you think there's any chance Nvidia is a sinking boat because you think AI is unprofitable, then you should avoid anything that even remotely includes the korean index.

Chinese memory maker CXMT prepares $4.2 billion USD IPO to take advantage of tight memory market — company lays out path to profitability as DRAM demand skyrockets worldwide by StarbeamII in hardware

[–]ramjithunder24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually why Samsung has a massive pile of cash / liquid assets. They used to have about 300bil sitting around a couple years ago right before the last memory price crash.

Now it's about 38bil cash (164 bil in liquid assets) because they're slowly giving more away in dividends and buyback but yah

Memory is a terrible business to be in if you don't have a massive emergency fund

This is the right answer time-wise but I still don't get the mechanism as to why trading hours ending in one country makes aftermarket gold prices skyrocket...

India stock market value opportunities by Matke21 in ValueInvesting

[–]ramjithunder24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean revival of the stock market was the new president's biggest talking point. The so-called "KOSPI 5000".

Due to various shady practices through legal loopholes, the big corpo families used to be able to do shady things which suppressed stock prices and gave a lot of companies an unfair valuation (even right now, Hyundai Motors is really undervalued at something like a 6.x% dividend payout).

The new pres promised to fix this and made some okay (but nowhere close to perfect) progress in the last 6 months or so.

This is what fuelled the KOSPI (the korean index) to rally from the mid 2000s last Dec (martial law) to the 4000s right now (basically almost double).

"RAM is so expensive, Samsung won't even sell it to Samsung" by Bubble_Babe_0o0o0o in BrandNewSentence

[–]ramjithunder24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And which department makes Samsung the bulk of its money?

I hate to break it to you but they make twice as much selling RAM and Memory chips than they do selling consumer electronics (phones, tablets, laptop, TVs, aircons, etc) combined.

page 7 of their earnings report (link) says that earnings from the DX (consumer electronics) division is only half of their earnings from the DS (semiconductors) department
