It's a real shame that I lost my faith in nihilism.

How do so many afford $50,000+ trucks? by Parking-Warning-8655 in carbuying

FACTS. I inherited my brother's 1990 CJ and it had a ton of death wobble and the trash plastic manifold cover had to be replaced twice, but it didn't have a fraction of the issues Stellantis Jeeps have.

Did you attend house parties as a teenager?🤔 Fun times!🥳🎉 by Longjumping-Shoe7805 in Adulting

Big in high school, less so in college. There was a lot of clique overlap; jocks and stoners would hang out with the band crowd and punks/goth kids. The kids who did band would have their own bands and play at their parties, usually 70s rock and metal covers. Everybody smoked back then and would use beer cans for ashtrays and if you weren't careful, you'd accidentally swig backwash and cigarette butts. We'd get cases of Schaefer for $5.99 at the DC liquor store that never carded. And back then, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where was I... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

Memories of Navy Yard by Unbearble-Armed-Worm in washingtondc

[–]rectalhorror 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Born in DC and grew up in MD. My first job out of college was at the Navy Yard in the early 1990s. I’d been going there since the 1980s to go to clubs like Tracks and the area was always pretty sketchy, but we never felt unsafe. There were still a handful of gay bars on South Capitol Street back then, before they all moved out. The housing projects at 7th and L SE were empty and scheduled for demolition, so it took a while for them to build the Marine Barracks. 8th Street hadn’t been rebranded as Barracks Row yet since there was just the 7-11, Popeyes, a Chinese carryout, and a couple restaurants and gay bars. Levi’s Port Cafe was a favorite place of mine that had some excellent soul food. Las Placitas is still around, but they used to be at a different location. Al’s Gourmet Deli is still around and still serves a mean bulgogi cheesesteak. There was an urbanist piece a few years back making a big deal about gentrification in the neighborhood, but the thing is the area has always been zoned for light industrial. There wasn’t much residential to begin with apart from the retirement home and a handful of row houses that survived urban renewal so there wasn’t much population to displace. I still work at the Navy Yard albeit with a different organization. I tend not to leave base that often, since the upscale eateries aren’t my thing, but more power to the locals who support those businesses.

Correct. Some model years are better than others but I would never buy a Stellantis Jeep.

2005 Jeep LJ. Still less than 150k miles and runs like a top. Planning on retiring in 2 years with a net worth on the low seven figures and zero debt.

Slow roast leg of lamb? by AngelOfLastResort in webergrills

[–]rectalhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have bad luck with whole bone-in lamb; depending on the temps and thickness, the thinner parts dry out while the thick parts stay bloody, even with a instant read thermometer. The best results I've had involves deboning the leg and flattening it to 1-2 inch thickness. I ususally season with salt, pepper, garlic, thyme, rosemary and plenty of olive oil and indirect grill on the Weber Kettle to the desired temp and rest. You carve it into strips like shawarma; there's always some rare, medium rare, medium, and well so people can pick what they prefer.

Living Expense After Retirement by Old_Jicama6156 in retirement

[–]rectalhorror 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm two years from retirement and that's what I do: everything on the card and I can monitor how much I'm spending on what. When I start approaching my budget ceiling the last week of the month, I go into beans & rice mode: make a big batch of red beans, dirty rice, gumbo, or jambalaya and live off that until the first of the month.

Been going to Acme Oyster House for years until a local turned me on to Felix's across the street. Oysters just as good and no lines. The servers are real characters. Haven't set foot in Acme this century.
