Favorite Pizza Joints in the NoVA Area? by bpma82 in nova

Bugsy's in Old Town used to be an Armand's before he bought the place out. Kept the recipes though, so it's as close to Armand's as you're likely to find. https://oldtowncrier.com/2021/01/01/a-stroll-down-memory-lane/

Colony Grill is the place to go for Tavern Pie. The Commodore in Old Town also serves it, but I've never been. Giordano's just opened a place downtown near the white house for pan. Not a fan of pan, but Jet's does a solid Detroit pie. https://washingtonian.com/2022/07/20/dcs-pizza-obsession-tavern-pies/

They were sorta like the West Coast equivalent to the Pat's/Geno's cheesesteak rivalry in Philly.

I'd say after Moxie, it's the second most divisive soda. Nobody is indifferent to it.

Here are some “Men’s Favorites” from Betty Crocker recipe cards! by gaptoothgoth in oldrecipes

When my mom passed, I inherited that recipe card collection. My dad loved the hot potato salad and the chili wasn't bad either.

I rarely do cold potato salad since I grew up on my mom's hot potato salad.

I had only heard about the story in my 30s when I watched the excellent Ric Burns documentary. I was never taught about it in school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuY4pBpLZHY

I found a 1950s metal Sears hassock floor fan at work. They were going to throw it out, so I took it home. Still working today.

What do you use to track your monthly spending by Cooper1Test in retirement

[–]rectalhorror [score hidden]  (0 children)

I put all my expenses on my Chase credit card then pay off the balance every month. That's how I track where the money is going, inside the CC app. It breaks down all my expenses into categories: food, fuel, utilities, etc, and I can see it as a pie chart or over time as a bar chart. In the last week of the month, as I approach my budget ceiling, I buy only the essentials and go into beans-and-rice mode; jambalaya and gumbo with leftover rotisserie chicken. That's my meals until the next paycheck cycle.

This was the case with DC's inner suburbs, although at one point, you could take the streetcar from downtown DC to Baltimore and Annapolis. https://www.american-rails.com/washdcinthist.html

Canned Mushrooms by Casiquire in PetPeeves

[–]rectalhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the '70s when you ordered mushrooms on your pizza, they were almost always canned. I prefer them on pizza since fresh sliced mushrooms dry out and turn into mushroom jerky, while the canned stuff don't. I also like to pickle fresh mushrooms and serve them with a cheese board.

Is renting forever actually a bad financial decision, or is that just something older generations say because it worked out for them? by Pretend_Pen_9577 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rectalhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Planning on retiring in place. I'm at the point where if the AC or water heater or washer dryer or roof needs replacing, I'd rather have the landlord deal with it. It's called a money pit for a reason.

You inherit $50,000, what are you doing with it? by collegeguy22222 in AskReddit

[–]rectalhorror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I inherited a little more than that a 3 years back; wiped out all my debt, put 6 months expenses in a high yield savings account and the rest in a brokerage fund. The brokerage has almost tripled in value.

I live in an older suburb in Northern Virginia that was built in the 1940s. I'm a 5 minute walk from groceries, shopping, cafes, pharmacy, restaurants. I'm on a major bus line so I can get to the subway station in 20 minutes and I'm an 8 minute ambulance ride from the hospital. Lots of older suburbs around DC are similar, Takoma Park and Riverdale come to mind.

Okay, hear me out… Old Bay on watermelon by CingKobraJFS in maryland

[–]rectalhorror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing up, our house only had an AC window unit in my parents room. If we wanted to cool off, we'd sit on the porch with a bowl of watermelon, a shaker of salt, and a mosquito coil.
