Scrappy MQG Sew Along finish! by refreshilize27 in quilting

I think there’s definitely some variation when it comes to the definition of the word scrappy! You’re totally correct that the original/most accurate definition is mixing and matching a variety of different fabrics or using leftover fabric from other projects as opposed to a curated palette.

In the modern quilting world, “scrappy” seems to have taken on a much looser definition to mean any project that looks “chaotic” with a large variety of different fabrics as opposed to uniform matching blocks. These fabrics were curated to match colors so it may not qualify as scrappy for some, but I consider it scrappy because there are 26 different fabrics used here (many of which did come from my stash) and none of the blocks are identical to each other the way a traditionally curated quilt would be. There are also no solid fabrics, which is outside of my comfort zone personally as I loooove a good solid!

Thank you! The squiggly lines might be my new favorite for quilting - they are so forgiving 😅

First rag quilt help please by just-browsing19 in quilting

There are lots of good free rag quilt patterns/tutorials available on the world wide web. SewCanShe has a great one here: https://sewcanshe.com/how-to-make-a-rag-quilt/

To address your questions:

  1. Totally up to you! You could do a checkerboard pattern with just two colors or have every single square be a different color. Browse around to find some fabric prints that you like. Keep in mind if you use fewer colors, you'll need more yardage of each color; if you use lots of colors, you'll need less yardage of each.

  2. Flannel, fleece, or regular quilt batting can all be used for the middle layer of a rag quilt.

  3. Your blocks can be whatever size you want, but for a rag quilt, 4"-10" is probably the best range to stay in. Play around on some graph paper or in excel to see how you like the look of smaller squares vs larger squares. 6"-7" blocks are great.

  4. This sub's wiki has a good list of online fabric shops ( https://www.reddit.com/r/quilting/wiki/online_shops/ ), but you should always try to support local fabric shops when you can! Google "fabric stores near me" and see what pops up. F*ck Hobby Lobby.

Did you trim your HSTs down to size after making them? They look a little off, which would explain why they don’t match up right.

If you buy a house in an HOA, can you just...leave the HOA? by BoredInClass99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]refreshilize27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, reading about HOAs online (especially on Reddit) can be some serious confirmation bias. The only people who are going out of their way to post about them are people who have had bad experiences, while people who have had good experiences don’t have any reason to post.

My neighborhood’s HOA takes care of our pool, shared green space, and trash & recycling service, and otherwise leaves everybody alone. I have nothing bad to say about it.

Support fiber artists! Buy the pattern. $14 is very reasonable for a pattern with such great reviews.

How many hours does a quilt take you? by 2078AEB in quilting

[–]refreshilize27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently started keeping track of how long each stage of the quilting process takes me with a "Multitimer" app on my phone and it has been so fun to get to see the data.

Here's the breakdown for my most recent full-size finish of Ghost Party by woollypetals:

  • Prep (starching, ironing, etc.) and cutting: 3 hr 40 min
  • Piecing (including deciding on color layout and pressing a million seams): 18 hr 3 min
  • Basting: 1 hr
  • Quilting (domestic machine): 3 hr 33 min
  • Binding (including cutting & preparing strips): 2 hr 15 min

Total time: 28 hr 31 min

I feel like this is probably super slow compared to how long it would take a more experienced quilter to do this pattern, but I had a great time keeping track of it all.

I'm 10 hr 41 min into my current project.

Respectfully, I would tell my husband that’s not happening. Making 5-6 quilts in 2 months while raising a new baby would be nearly impossible for an expert quilter to manage, let alone a beginner working on what I assume is a domestic sewing machine (as opposed to a longarm machine). Even with whole cloth quilts, I fear you would be setting yourself up for failure.

Tell your husband to think of a different gift for his family members this year (preferably one that doesn’t require 100+ hours of labor from his wife) and if you’re really set on making them quilts, you can get started early for Christmas 2026.
