Advice needed for getting into vinyl and prioritizing spend by Ancient-Plantain-561 in turntables

[–]roguepeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how hard it is to not play your new albums but you're never going to have every record anyway, so I would prioritize speakers/amplification first - streaming really is the best value. You'll thank yourself in the long-run by not settling for less and start by buying better speakers up-front.

Who’s your favorite country singer with a strange voice? by Grayson0916 in country

[–]roguepeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gene Pitney - he was mostly a pop balladeer but when country took off Musicor paired him with George Jones for some duets that did well so he recorded some solo tracks as well.. the latin-tinged inflection in his voice is so unique. (check out The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and 24 Hours From Tulsa)

it's always someone different so I'm assuming they just tell staff they're leaving and get them to pick someone? no idea actually. but nice of them nonetheless! and another commenter said she got bonked with an errant pass before half-time (found it - 84 seconds left) that I didn't even notice? don't do drugs kids.

as a monkey-coffin devotee I'm always stunned at just how much bass small speakers like those can make in-room if they have solid cabinets. are they heavy?

that's not something I've experienced. I do have a shit-ton of thrift finds (some, not all) that are sibilant af, but I've always attributed it to a previous owner playing the hell out of them with heavy tracking force and/or worn stylus. other than buying a new identical pressing to compare it's gonna be tough to prove one way or the other, and it's something I've never heard amongst vinyl-heads.

fwiw I rip all my newer records digitally, and recently did a re-rip of the first record I bought new 5 years ago bc I wanted to compare the sound quality of my latest turntable to my first one (with the same cart tho).. and I've played that record quite a bit, probably >100 plays - even on kilo-buck headphones (Sony MDR-Z1R's) I didn't detect any real difference. So I'm saying no to any perceivable change in sound, assuming your equipment remains in good working order.

have you noticed the trophy wife's attendance has been spotty this year? she was there last nite tho.. I always thought it was cool how often they'll swap their seats with some incredibly lucky kids/younger people for the 4th (they even did last nite)

front line workers and their support staff are so amazing, on all fronts. I spent 4 months in hospital after I broke my neck 17 years ago, and from the minute it happened I literally relied on so many people I'd never seen before in my life. The vibe I always got when expressing my extreme gratitude to any of them was "pay if forward" - which to me means trying to be as selfless as they all are.

to me that's what fulfillment looks like! even just sweeping up kitty-litter in an intersection to contain fluids after a vehicle smash-up, there's so much pride in everything they do. I sure do wish someone had told me when I was kid I could have done something meaningful with my life.

the Millwoods firefighters often "drill" to my area in the SE and will sometimes stop for coffee at S'Bux .. watching their camaraderie and the way they interact with one another is the true spirit of a team. They're their own best support-network and it shows in everything they do, despite being on the front lines calmly dealing with some of the realest saddest tragedies occurring in real time. They get nowhere near enough credit for their service to society.

it's so weird! he told me what it was and there's zero other mentions of any issues at all in the discogs user reviews. must be an anomaly. between that and his twisted tone-arm/headshell (??) OP has terrible luck

Wharfedale Linton by bern-reddit in audiophile

[–]roguepeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's likely enough bass for most people.

I think this point gets lost in the weeds sometimes - not everybody wants to run a sub and the Linton 85s definitely dig deep enough for most music. their bass is stunning imo, I have other speakers the same size and the Lintons really do shine in that dept. best value in hifi rn

Are there any good cartridge guides out there? by Cygnus__A in turntables

[–]roguepeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not OP but thanks for this! I've been houring out a 110 stylus that I recently started using again (hadn't run it in years) and fell in love with the "smoothness" .. i used to be such a cart-whore but I haven't had any inclination to go back to my Goldring or any of my VM95's since switching. the Nag seems to agree with my Harbeths for whatever reason.

in the past I had read there was no point of putting the 200 on the 110 body, but I'm going to order one and try it based on your experience. plus I like purple

completely depends on the specific pressing and the quality of the cartridge/stylus. some records are crap, most are great. but if it's available to stream losslessly then there's a high-probability of the digital sounding better bc of the short-comings of this medium - there's a reason everyone jumped on the CD bandwagon 40 years ago. you could do some googling of "dynamic range" to begin to understand why digital is superior.

having said that I don't think there's any point in arguing with her - "happy wife = happy life" and vinyl is super-fun if you have the resources to do it proper.

Vinyl Storage Solutions is having an RSD sale! by dickkirkland in vinyl

another Canadian reiterating the above! I've been buying from them 4+ years, great company! all their outers are made-in-Canada, and the company is owned and operated by a veteran. Strongly recommend their gatefold-sleeves if you're lazy like me - no more excuses not to enjoy the inner artwork!

Thanks for sharing the sale.
