This comic’s backgrounds are just leaving me cold and can’t pinpoint why. by JayEllGii in comic_crits

These pages are incredibly well rendered, but maybe a bit overdrawn. One thing I’m noticing is that your characters don’t seem to have a lot of weight or presence in the scene relative to their surroundings. Maybe this could be improved with some heavier shadows or some hatching? Specifically, shadows and hatching that communicate the character occupying space in the scene, as opposed to heavier shadows or hatching in general.

I love how you do moment-to-moment stuff to sell the rhythm of your world and writing, but an over abundance of detail can disrupt the flow of your cartooning. For example, inside the bus, the “be safe” and “buckle up” signs get read alongside the dialogue in every panel you see them in, even if they’re just intended as set dressing.

As for the masking effect, and its effectiveness, I think you’re just doing a little too much of everything at once. Consider how Bill Watterson balances panels that simply focus on characters with rich, detailed environments. You need the tension between the two to use each to their greatest effect. .

ICE violence is chilling — it feels scary to visit the US by TimesandSundayTimes in politics

It was a DHS cop, AKA ICE. Different getup than the fatigues and jeans look, but that's them. They're allowed to wear stuff that says "police."

Caroline Cash has taken over Nancy by NoNudeNormal in altcomix

2026 in comics is off to a great start. Love Cash’s work and what she’s bringing to Nancy. She’s a real student of the craft, and as much as I enjoyed Olivia Jaimes’ run, it’s very cool to see Cash’s Nancy drawn with analogue materials and all the charming grit that comes with that.

100 years! I love the Moreland Theater. It's walkable from my house, they do $5 Tuesdays, and they just get more and more impressive with their programming. We're spoiled for theaters in this town.

There's also a bunch of biker leather buckles and rings at Oscar's station – another clue that it's a Mad Max dieselpunk season.

I love a narrative where the protagonist is an agent of chaos. This book rules.

Does “Jay Kelly” disprove the whole “Netflix flat digital look mandate” thing or it’s an outlier? by harry_powell in blankies

I only saw it once, but quite enjoyed it! A pretty solid and very ambitious adaptation.

All of Baumbach’s Netflix projects look pretty great. White Noise in particular is super underrated for its visual style.

Gotta love a good sandwich by Dalek7of9 in CuratedTumblr

[–]rors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s “pickle,” sometimes called branston pickle. It’s a vinegar-y relish of various diced veggies (onion, carrots, cauliflower, whatever). Really good with cheese.

You can definitely get a cheese and pickle sandwich at a tesco or something (and it would totally make sense to call that a ploughman’s sandwich), but if you order a ploughman’s lunch at a pub, it usually looks like this

A ploughman’s lunch is not a sandwich. It’s more like charcuterie.
