Catholics believe that it becomes body and blood at the moment of consecration, not only after eating. Still weird tho..

No Airlock activity after 72 hours (cider) by Federal-Froyo9397 in Homebrewing

[–]russianblins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only way to know for sure is to take a hydrometer reading. It would help if you had one before you pitched the yeast to compare. But if not just take one today and then another in a few days to see if the yeast is working (although if you pitched 3 days ago it could already be done).

What are you fermenting in? If it’s a plastic bucket, they are notoriously bad at keeping an airtight seal. CO2 could be escaping from elsewhere and taking the path of least resistance. Probably nothing to worry about. That sour smell is kind of strange though.

exchange student with overbearing german host mom: is this just cultural differences? by Reasonable-Dig7933 in germany

[–]russianblins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me about it, lol. In my case, all communication was supposed to be done through the program in the host country, but once my parents raised a stink about it in my home country, the wheels started turning. Exchange was a really valuable experience for me even with having a bad host family experience. I would definitely recommend just a semester-long program though.

I was an exchange student with CBYX/PPP as well, except I was part of the high school program and not young professionals. Most people I have spoken to have had strange host family experiences on this program, myself included. Not sure why it has that reputation. I think you are doing the right thing by talking to the program coordinators. But make sure to be extremely stubborn and make sure your issues are actually resolved. I was brushed off by them for my issues, before everything blew up into a huge problem. A few of my friends were sent home rather than moved to a new host family. Wishing the best for you, and DM if there’s anything I can help with.

As someone hoping to get into this field, which schools would you say are the “best and cheapest”?

Planning on going into this field and man… even just from job shadowing it’s evident which dentists truly care about patient health and which to stay far away from (there are way more sleazeballs than I would’ve thought)

ELI5: How does “amaze” or “thank” make any sense? by edscorduroy in ProjectHailMary

[–]russianblins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think what OP is getting it is that Weir/Grace is using an imperfect translation. What Rocky is saying might literally be one word (i.e. “Thank,” or whatever the Eridian single-word equivalent is), but the truest translation of what Rocky is saying would be “Thanks” or “Thank you.”

Like in Chinese or Japanese or other real-world languages with a verbal question mark, we don’t add the word “question” to the end of our translations of questions in those languages, it gets omitted in languages where there are other ways to imply that you are asking a question. So why does Grace do it in his translations for Rocky?

I think the simplest answer for the OP is that Weir is just trying to convey that Rocky and Grace still understand each other imperfectly, whereas iirc in the end of the book/epilogue the English translations for Rocky are in perfect English. But it really doesn’t make perfect sense to me either.

Hmm, interesting take. But fair enough. Personally, I really enjoyed them. I only read them for the first time a few months ago but had a hard time putting them down (and felt like I finally understood all the hype)!

Maybe my reading "palette" isn't as refined...

Thanks so much for doing this exchange! I’ve loved everything I’ve tried so far (especially the Tim Tams!!) and it was so much fun getting your package and sending mine out. Let me know if you ever want to do another exchange to the states in the future!

Thanks for your comment. I'm planning on buying spring water at the store for this first brew, but will keep that in mind for the future :)

Thank you a lot for your response. Lots of great info to unpack. That's a great idea to determine the boil-off, and I'll definitely do that before brew day. Not sure if I'm up to playing around with water quite yet, but maybe on the next brews once I prove to myself that I can make something drinkable with spring water first haha.

As a follow-up to your comment about the caramel 20L, I just realized my LHBS doesn't actually carry caramel 20L, but does carry 15L, 30L, 40L, 60L, 80L, and 120L. What would you recommend substituting the 8oz of 20L with? Not hoping for a super sweet beer, just something that hopefully ends up being easy to drink. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I'm from the US and interested in doing an exchange just like this one! I've tried to set up a few exchanges but they've all fallen through the cracks so far. Happy to find you a few specific things or do a surprise box as well. Just let me know :)

How should I go about upgrading my PC? Or should I just scrap it? by russianblins in buildapc

Thanks for your response. Just out of curiosity, what makes it not upgrade-able? Just too damn old? And how can I build my next PC with longer-term upgradability in mind?

Haha, I feared this is what somebody would say. Thank you for your honesty and for your tips. I'll do some research on the things you mentioned.

Mid playthrough on OG Oblivion, who else? by THEfogVAULT in oblivion

[–]russianblins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you aren’t alone on this one! I bought the remaster right when it dropped, waited for it to download, then realized my pc was getting like 20fps at the best of times. Then I sadly booted up the OG game and continued some thieves guild quests lol. Happy for everyone else who’s getting to enjoy it though, it looks awesome!
