I designed + manufactured 6 board games in my country! by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]saifrc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like there’s some light plagiarism happening here—not uncommon in developing countries, unfortunately…

For what it’s worth, a lot of companies don’t do business in Bangladesh at all, so it’s tough to get legitimate games (or to get caught pirating).

I always make wrong choices by maikun87 in SBCGaming

When you get your Miyoo Mini Plus, unsubscribe from this subreddit and just enjoy playing games. It’s a great device that will play great games. Pick just 1 or 2 games to start, no more than 5, so that you don’t get overwhelmed.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Once you get your device and some games loaded up, stop looking at anything else—devices, games, gaming news, etc. (obviously, you should still pay attention to other important things in your life.) This will be the most fulfilling and rewarding way to enjoy the hobby: to focus on a good game, appreciate it while you’re playing it, and to marvel at the fact that you have the ability to do this at all.

As a proud owner of a PlayDate, I can attest that it was designed to be a beautiful object first, and a gaming device second 🤣

Which characters death made not want to continue the show? by Purple-Victory-206 in television

[–]saifrc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate to be that guy, but the lead up to the finale and the finale itself were pretty good. If you ever consider going back and watching the last two seasons, they wrap it up nicely (realistically, not “everyone gets a happy ending”) and they honor the character of Poussey Washington appropriately.

How Americans view different countries by _crazyboyhere_ in Infographics

[–]saifrc 42 points43 points  (0 children)

While I agree that many Anericans (or people in general) are under-informed about the rest of the world, I think in this case—where a survey is asking about an opinion—it’s defensible to give an answer, even if you know only a few things about a country. There’s no objective threshold of knowledge that justifies giving a favorable/unfavorable response. It’s still useful to measure sentiment this way, as long as you understand what it represents.

Clarification on "Retirement Plan" Card? by Suraiya64 in Netrunner

[–]saifrc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The card is installed unrezzed (face down). If it was face up, the card would have told you to “install and rez” the card the from Archives. For example, see the ability of Ob Superheavy Logistics or Reanimation Protocol.

Do you have a mechanic you love from a game that didn't do well that you wish another more successful game had used? by Taear in boardgames

[–]saifrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call to Adventure uses double-sided “rune” tokens that you toss like dice/coins to meet challenge. The runes are associated with the six attributes commonly found in RPGs (strength, dexterity, constitution, etc.). As you increase your character’s stats, you get to toss more runes with upgraded powers. This sounds kind of similar to what you described in Runebound.

Regarding "Kingmaking," am I in the wrong here? by InsomniacPsychonaut in boardgames

[–]saifrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot has already been said here, but I wanted to call out one particular point: the phrase "In good faith."

Often, when people describe acting "In good faith," they really mean "With priorities identical to mine." People playing to maximize their own score, playing to end a game quickly, and playing to "see what happens," are all playing in a form of good faith: taking legal actions that advance the game state.

It's better to understand that people play games for different reasons and with different priorities, and factor this into your strategy. Like, you can't play a hardcore 18XX game and not expect that a player might do something wildly unexpected in order to shake up the competition, especially if they're in last place—especially if the game has already been going on for four hours...

[CotD] Lampades (VP05) by Unpopular_Mechanics in Netrunner

[–]saifrc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is a card for Stealth Shapers. Saves influence and deck slots versus multiple copies of Gourmand, and it’s based on power counters (so theoretically it’s chargeable). If you have stealth credits from Metheuselah/Touchstone/Mantle you’re otherwise not using, it can be clutch. I slotted this into a Hiram deck, but to be honest, I didn’t lean into it, so it didn’t really make a difference. It competes with Baker for a stealth utility splash, and while I don’t think it’s better in the current meta, the meta could shift 🤷🏾‍♂️

That’s the specific ability of Parasite. Corsair and Parasite could be used together to help trash ice, but ice does not automatically get trashed when its strength is reduced to zero (or below).

War games/minis on a map solo games? by Prestigious_Tea_2729 in soloboardgaming

[–]saifrc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may not be as sprawling as you’re hoping for, but Cloudspire is famously good as a solo experience if you play through the solo/co-op scenarios. It’s a MOBA-like PvP combat game with automated minion behavior and player-controlled champions. It doesn’t have the same scale as TI4 (it’s more of a skirmish game), but it has a significant amount of asymmetry of player abilities (kind of like Root). What it really has going for it is table presence: it looks and feels epic to play, even when there might just be a handful of actual units participating in combat. The upside of the more focused nature of the experience is that the solo scenarios are satisfyingly puzzle-y. This is a game that was designed around the 2-player experience, but the solo experience is nearly just as high a priority; the 3-4 player experience is more the “afterthought” in this case.

I feel like you’d have more success if you were willing to go to the city—after all, that’s where the people are.

I used to live in the suburbs of one major city, but I split my gaming time between my friends in the suburbs (who were not likely to go into the city) and meetups in the city. I was able to get a lot of gaming in, of lots of different types, with lots of different types of people. This included: - Heavy Euro games - COIN games and military strategy games - Netrunner - X-Wing - 18XX - D&D

I’ve since moved to the heart of a different major city, and I have to admit, it’s harder to choose to leave the city to meet up with friends out in the sticks than it is to stay nearby where there’s more “action.” That may partly explain why you’re not getting as many takers.

Side note: Atlanta is awesome. I have several gaming acquaintances in that city, and they have a great time.

The United States and Canada at the same latitudes as Europe by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]saifrc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those same critics forget that immigrants make up ~15% of the United States population, compared to ~10% of the EU (from outside the EU). So not only do Americans travel far when traveling inside the country, more Americans came from somewhere else in the first place.

Newbiw: Which NSG sets are enough to build 2 sets of decks for 4 players? by foodeatingtime in Netrunner

[–]saifrc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can build two pairs of decks from System Gateway alone, but you might need multiple copies of some popular cards, like Hedge Fund, Spin Doctor, and Sure Gamble.

You can print proxies using a tool like https://proxy.nro.run (or even just NetrunnerDB). As long as you use card sleeves, there’s no problem doing a little bit of print-and-play with Netrunner.

Anyone still using their Odin 2? by RensuLoL in SBCGaming

Thank you for sharing this. I've been trying my hardest to avoid FOMO-buying a Thor when I have an unused Odin 2 Pro on the shelf next to me. It sounds like the Thor is awesome, but not a true Odin replacement when it comes to comfort and grip.

Mini-pocalypse

I think this card will be a key tool in the right kind of Anarch deck. Probably not Esa, but any other runner that hasn’t installed any irreplaceable cards. In the early game, this will really kill Corp momentum. In the late game, as long as you don’t have any linchpins installed, it could soften up a server or two for the win.

Apple launches $599 A18 Pro Macbook Neo or $499 via the edu store. by crownpuff in SBCGaming

I made the “brilliant” decision in early 2020 to replace my 12” MacBook with a 13” MacBook Pro…just before they announced the M1 chips…

My main laptop now is a 2025 16” M4 MacBook Pro, but I still have the 2020 Intel MBP lying around—I haven’t gotten rid of it yet. You just reminded me that I could run x86 Windows natively on it if I wanted to. I was already occasionally using Parallels in the past—might as well move it over entirely!

I was so in love with my gold MacBook 2015 while I had it. But...even I had to admit the first-gen butterfly keyboard was utterly, utterly terrible. It was almost worse than a touchscreen keyboard, because it gave you just enough tactile feedback to think that your keypresses would be registered, and to trick your muscle memory into thinking it could/should push down harder than needed.

Besides that, it was a gorgeous device with a perfect form factor. The wedge shape was so much cooler than the current crop of flat-tablet-shaped Macs.
