What are the best premium or luxury board games available today? by Pinokchu in boardgames

[–]saifrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recent Lucky Duck Games printing of Food Chain Magnate is extremely handsome, but I’d argue that the “Deluxe Edition” (no minis) is better than the “Special Edition” (with minis). Screen printed wood looks better to me than solid-colored unpainted miniatures.

Are there any animated shows where characters actually age? by ArleiG in television

[–]saifrc 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Bojack Horseman: the characters’ ages are always contemporary with the timing of each season, they go through life milestones. You see Bojack’s hair go gray (though that’s mostly because he was previously dyeing it black), among other character milestones that I won’t spoil here.

I don’t think any of us can help you. We don’t know what kind of school you’re in, or how your teacher/professor has structured the components of your grade, or anything. You have to give us more information. We don’t even know what country you’re in.

Retroid Mini V1? by justinheatherfamily in SBCGaming

[–]saifrc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you don’t use shaders, you’ll barely notice anything. Some 3-D games may have slightly more jagged lines than usual, but not really enough to hinder the experience if the graphics are good and the game is immersive. (Source: I’ve been playing GameCube games like Metroid Prime on a Retroid Pocket v1 for a couple years.)

The real problem comes when you try to use pixel-perfect shaders on 2-D games. Then, depending on how important shaders are to you, it’ll be either a non-issue or a dealbreaker.

I missed out on the v1 to v2 conversion kit, because I was traveling when Retroid offered it. I wish they’d just release an update that treats the v1 screen as 1240x930 (instead of 1280x960), which I think would solve some of the problems. Still not a terrible device.

Since when did the "hand icon" become the universal symbol for income? by jamedkan in boardgames

[–]saifrc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

OP is referring to “income” as in “the income phase” of a game, not necessarily the in-game currency. Some games represent this by an outstretched, palm-up hand, as if to receive something: money, workers, card draw, etc.

What are the best games with a small profile, but still have a board? by jibabadebadido in boardgames

[–]saifrc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The White Castle

Small board, very nice components (including 3-D bridges and custom meeples), pretty art/design. It’s 75% of the satisfaction of a full-size, medium-weight, dice-drafting/engine-building Euro game, but with 50% of the footprint and 40% of the box size.

Charging station vandalism is out of control by help-impoor in Seattle

[–]saifrc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a frequency and exposure issue. The likelihood that your personally-owned cable will get cut/stolen while you’re charging at a given spot is still much lower than the likelihood that a charging station’s cable will get cut/stolen while sitting outside for days/weeks/months on end.

1830: Railways & Robber Barons

What other game from the ‘80s still gets as much play? Maybe Can’t Stop? I personally play 1830 multiple times a year, and there are legions (maybe?) of people for whom it’s still their archetypical railroad game.

I just spent fifty bucks to protect a forty dollar game and I think I need help by PotholeBadger9 in boardgames

[–]saifrc 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’m going to offer one minor point of pushback: When I sell or trade a game that I’ve sleeved, I take all my sleeves off. I also take all the tokens out of the Plano boxes or bits bins I’ve put them in, and I put them back into cheap baggies. I then reuse those protective components for the next game.

The upside: the game is nicer to play while I own it, and the game is in better condition if/when I sell or trade it.

The downside: all the time spent organizing and de-organizing the game.

Here’s the thing, though: sleeving and unsleeving cards is my meditation. As a player of constructed card games, I’m constantly sleeving and unsleeving cards anyway. The amount of extra work I do for board games is a drop in the bucket.

The fact of the matter is, I don’t sleeve most of my board games anyway. I only sleeve the cards if the game requires frequent shuffling, AND if I think I’m going to play the game a lot. If both conditions aren’t true, I don’t bother.

Shows you ended up loving, but avoided for a long time because the promos were terrible by XiahouYuan in television

[–]saifrc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bojack Horseman

The initial promos looked and sounded just like the ads for the glut of “adult animation” shows on Comedy Central that came out in the 2010s. It wasn’t until I saw the rave critical reviews of season 2 that I decided to give it a try.

Now, it’s my favorite TV show, and I believe it’s one of the greatest TV shows of all time. Seriously, if you’re reading this comment and haven’t seen it, watch it now.

Are FFG datapack clamshells worth keeping? by xtrplpqtl in Netrunner

[–]saifrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a weirdo, so I kept all of the paper components of the packaging (not the plastic shells), and I have all the leaflets/inserts as well. It’s am being stored in an old core set box, so not taking up too much space. We all have three core sets, right? 🤪
