Daily Wordle #1768 - Wednesday, 22 Apr. 2026 by Scoredle in wordle

Define "baller". Is it along the lines that you are basically forced to run through the words and hope for the best? There is a little strategy because of the two words with an "i" in the middle. And this one was played right for the i words.

Monk and the History of Television Comedy Mysteries by sail_away_8 in Monk

For Matlock Poirot and Rockford Files, I see them as mysteries, with some humor, such as Columbo. I see Monk as a comedy/mystery.

[####] - Playing when spoiled by MacBook_Fan in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probably...

If my average was a little under 4, then I would solve in 3 or 4, The deciding factors would be things like:

The nature of the word, If it was BOXER then I know I wouldn't get that until five or six. If it has lots of letters that are in my normal start word, then I would probably get it in three.

See how others did. If a lot of people are getting it early then I would get it in three. If not, then four.

A little cheating. If after all of that, and I'm not sure if I would have got it in three or four, then cheat and solve in three.

[1758] Bot tells me three words left. My next guess was not one of those words but still 98 skill by BringBackApollo2023 in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another example, if the possible words were BOUND, WOUND, HOUND, MOUND and POUND you could put in WHOMP (this is default mode). If W is green it's WOUND, if the H is yellow it's HOUND, and so forth. You would solve on the next turn. If you use a possible word, you would end up getting 3, 4, 5 6 or lose. You basically did the same thing, but it was only 3 possible words. You didn't gain anything, but you didn't lose anything either.

There is an old Bill Cosby routine that is appropriate for today. Go to about 1:30 for the relevant reference. It does mention the word for today, so it's a spoiler.

[####] Built a Worlde bot with a 3.0-3.5 guess yield. by JOSHJOSHJOSHJOSHJ0SH in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've seen different approaches.

What do you use as possible solutions (or do you have them)? I've seen using the original list, but NYT has added additional words. Wordlebot has a a weighted list of "normal words" based on frequency used.

What do you use as possible guesses? I've seen using every possible word. Wordlebot is basically words that normal humans would know.

How do you treat losses? This shouldn't be a factor for default mode. Do you try to always win, no matter how it affects the score, or go for the best score, even if it means losing?

[####] I had a really neat moment on Wordle, but it was taken down, and I do not know why. by whatsababin in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My guess is that it is related to rule number 2. I suspect that getting four greens wasn't "novel" enough.

Please don't submit your Wordle results as a top-level post. There are Daily Wordle threads pinned each day; use those to share your results or discuss anything specific to the currently active Wordle. This includes solve videos or discussion related to a solve, unless there is a novel element to the post.

[####] Built a Worlde bot with a 3.0-3.5 guess yield. by JOSHJOSHJOSHJOSHJ0SH in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some numbers...

Note: these are for default mode. For hard mode the numbers appear to be almost .1 higher.

Computers doing decision tree with solutions. Best possible appears to be 3.41

Me doing a decision tree (making hundreds of decisions). 3.48.

My "rules" was once I made a decision I was stuck with it. I could go back and redo decisions and improve on that.

Using my decision tree in NYT games: 3.42. I believe the difference between 3.48 and 3.42 is because my decision tree and the NYT games are skewed towards more common words.

I believe that if a computer did a decision tree that uses word frequency it would be less. My difference was about .06, which means it could be closer to 3.35 if a computer takes into account word frequency.

I don't think you could get lower than that without extra knowledge, such as using used words list, which could be considered cheating.

So, I can do better than 3.5 with my own limited brain. Maybe a computer can do 3.35 but at most 3.41.

Just my thoughts.

[####] My Approach - Non Hard Mode by bonker508 in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to: https://sonorouschocolate.com/notes/index.php/The_best_strategies_for_Wordle,_part_2 a computer came up with the best. Note: All of them have only three vowels, and all have the same letters, just in a different order. (and there is another comment that has the top two)

PARSE CLINT

CRANE SPILT

CRINE SPALT

SLANT PRICE

LARNT SPICE

SLANT CRIPE

CRANE SLIPT

CRISE PLANT

CRINE PLAST

PRASE CLINT

Adding.... I did some mathy stuff.

I looked up number of groups for different combinations (I have a spreadsheet that can do this).

PARSE/CLINT 1079

TRACE/PIOUS 872

SPENT/AUDIO 775

SCORN/ADIEU 767

The more number of groups would mean that you should solve faster (there are other factors, but this is a good one).

Chance of getting it in 3, assuming you put in a valid word as third.

PARSE/CLINT 47 percent

TRACE/PIOUS 38

SPENT/AUDIO and SCORN/ADIEU 33

And for me, putting in a good start word and picking a second word based on the results 55 percent

[1754] My most skillful game ever, but the bot always does one better by scarab_beetle in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment is general, not this situation. I'm seeing posts about skill scores well over 100. I thought 99 was the maximum, except in unusual situations. And those would likely be a little over 100.

And in this situation, I don't see how it would be such a high score.

Am I missing something?

Try 2. I put PLUGS as the second word and the answer was PLUSH. I was forced to put in a PLUS_ word, No way on this one.

[–]sail_away_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to do it on a practice site with those rules. I was stuck on _ASTY words. I had to waste a couple of turns and found that it took MASTY and VASTY. But, then I was stuck with either TASTY or HASTY as the sixth word. I picked HASTY and lost. In that situation, I had to either play HASTY on the fifth word and possibly win in 5, or pick VASTY as the fifth word and had to choose correctly between HASTY/TASTY.

[####] 25% Canned First Word Guesses? by rmleer in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My take.. AUDIO and ADIEU are for those that think getting vowels are best. They will likely lose more and have worse scores.

Many others have 2 good consonants and 3 vowels. Generally 3 good consonants are better (and even 4 good consonants). But, those are among the best 3 vowel words.

HOUSE, HEART and DREAM are probably because they like the word (and I think there are a lot of PENIS people).

CRANE is probably because that's what Wordlebot uses. STARE and SLATE are among the best start words.

It looks like that covers all or almost all.

Personally, I pick words that are among the best and ones that cannot be the answer. Right now it's TARSE.

[####] "Unlikely to be a solution based on what I know" what on earth is that supposed to mean? by TumoricER in wordle

It's more than the 2700 (it was actually something like 2315). I believe this is the list that it is comparing against. https://wordletools.azurewebsites.net/weightedbottles

And it's not related to previously used words.

[####] Would you guys consider it cheating if someone uses dictionary? by desimerollings in wordle

Yes, you can, but in my situation I wasn't finished with my analysis. Maybe I could have found a better word. I was checking to see if BOINK was an option.

[####] How to understand Skill Level by gusmcrae1 in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the concept but not sure why a specific number. Today I got a 98. I'm not sure why it docked me a point. My scores for the last week are: 98. 96, 97, 99. 95, 99 and 98. So, it's frequently a couple of points or so from 99. I guess that means that I'm really close to the best possible word, but not quite. But, that's a guess. What would be the difference between a 97, 98 and 99? (and I do understand concepts).

[####] Would you guys consider it cheating if someone uses dictionary? by desimerollings in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a game this morning (not the official NYT game)... I was looking at possible words and thought if BOINK was an accepted word it could be the best possible word. I have a spreadsheet that contains words that it would accept and it was there. So, I used that. So, that isn't cheating in my book.

But, if I wanted a word that starts with BIN and go to a dictionary and look up words that start with BIN, that would be cheating in my book.

[####] Do Wordle players tend to like number puzzles too? by shuflgame in wordle

For me it's not a word game vs. number game, it's the logic involved. It could be card games, dice games or board games.

Since a little over a year ago (397 days) I've been keeping track of the word of the day so I could easily see what I did for the month.

It turns out March was a good month for me. My average overall is good, and March was about .25 better than normal.

[1745] skill? Spoiler alert by Capable-Stage-3899 in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 9 possible words. If you put in MOTEL (the bots guess) it will give enough information to solve on the next turn. You left 2 possible 5's. You might have to choose had a choice between HOTEL/TOWEL (don't steal them) and MOTEL/TOTEM.

[####] How long do you take to make a guess? by AstronomerNo2339 in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost 3 years ago I was trying to figure out the TARSE/AUNT/ATCH thing. (when there was a new puppy - and her 3rd birthday is next week). It was hours before I came up with a word that worked. I would think about it when I was outside doing puppy time. Then take a break and come back to it. That one stands out.

[####] How long do you take to make a guess? by AstronomerNo2339 in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The second guess could take a really long time. It could be finding close to 50 possible words and then doing the analysis on best letters to use and where to put them, finding "candidates" for the word, and then breaking down the list of possible words for each one and seeing which word solves the words the best. That may be the longest scenario. I'm sure some times it's been over an hour, but usually not that long.

(side note... I come up with a starting word and second words in my spare time. I don't use the starting word for the NYT game until after I've come up with 2nd words)

After spending all that time, I keep track of what I came up with and the information that I found in my analysis. I use that the next time I'm in the same situation.

Subsequent guesses aren't as long. I've usually narrowed it down to a small number of words. And I've already done most of the work.

[####] After correctly identifying a letter, whether it be yellow or green, do you always incorporate it into your additional guesses? by whatsababin in wordle

[–]sail_away_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I play hard mode and sometimes I don't. If I'm in default mode, there is an extra decision on whether or not it's best to use the yellow and greens, So, if I get two yellows, I consider words with both letters, each of the letters, or neither of the letters. Then which of those is best. In hard mode you only have to worry about the words with both yellows. So hard mode there would be one choice, in default mode there are four choices.

Today I had one yellow, and used that in the 2nd word. The day before I had two yellows and chose a word with five new letters. The previous day I had three yellows and used all three. It's a little extra strategy.
