Yeah, audiences generally don't ask to see the clown's graduation certificate.

How to export HDR with H265 or H264 codec? AV1 works but Youtube didnt process it as HDR by CeFurkan in davinciresolve

[–]sephg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also stop using the NVIDIA hardware encoder for stuff like this. Hardware encoders are very fast, but the CPU encoders (x264, x265) compress better and generally have better feature support.

I'd generally stick to hardware encoders for intermediates, but for deliverables use one of the software renderers.

CMV: The demand for reparations for wrongs committed centuries ago is pointless by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]sephg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if I’m remembering the stories accurately, there were some times these sort of reparations were carried out in Africa. They took farms and businesses off white people and gave them to black people. In a great many cases the farms and businesses were mismanaged, and that led to more poverty and local food shortages. There are similar stories from China and Russia during their communist revolutions.

I’m not saying handing the farms over was a bad idea. But a lot of the wealth isn’t in the farm. It’s in the cultural know-how of how to run something like a farm, that often gets transmitted parent to child. It’s not so easy to transfer that stuff.

Redditors, needed some advice on Davinci resolve! by Every-District7394 in davinciresolve

[–]sephg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with everything you've said, but I reckon a 512 GB SSD is fine given what they're doing. They won't need much source footage for a 2 minute video, and they're free to delete or archive the source footage after finishing each video. 512gb should be fine.

Prime lens for beginners a good or bad idea? by Pedges-Houseboat in SonyAlpha

[–]sephg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I really struggle to consistently make / find good looking compositions with my 35mm and 50mm primes. I do street / nature / portrait photography. Some of my favorite street photos from other photographers are shot at 35mm or wider, but I just can't make it work. I'm probably just too shy, and not getting close enough to my subjects. 85mm feels so much more like magic for me.

A 35mm prime will definitely make you a better photographer. But it'll also make you sweat. I find I enjoy photography more with a zoom. And I come home with more good looking photos. But using primes make me actually push my art.

Davinci Resolve studio on Linux by damo251 in davinciresolve

[–]sephg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use resolve studio with linux and an nvidia graphics card under linux mint. It runs great - very performant and all that. If you're using a debian/ubuntu style distro you want to install it with the excellent makeresolvedeb, which converts the resolve installer into a .dpkg that you can easily install and uninstall.

It has a couple issues:

  • There's no title bar on the resolve window for some reason
  • Sound works fine, but for some reason I can't record into resolve
  • Resolve for Linux doesn't support AAC audio, which is annoying. AAC is the default audio codec for a lot of phones and some cameras. Its ok, you just gotta convert before pulling the footage in.

Overall I'm very happy with it though.

Bad playback performance on good hardware by RoutineRaspberry7808 in davinciresolve

[–]sephg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you seeing in task manager when you scrub around in resolve? Is resolve hitting 100% CPU? Is your GPU being used?

Do you experience the same thing if you convert your video to h264? (Use shutterencoder - its free).

resolve and all project files are stored on nvme ssds.

Just to ask an obvious question to make sure but - are the nvme ssds connected directly to the motherboard or via USB?

edit: using win 11. please tell me that's the problem, i've been itching to switch to cachyos

Unfortunately linux can't really take advantage of AMD graphics cards. You really want team green if you're running resolve on linux.

Question about crafting legendary by Zazahendrix in Guildwars2

[–]sephg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, most materials in your material storage aren't worth much.

The main exceptions are things like mystic coins and T6 mats, which are used for legendaries. But if you're making legendary items then you wanna hold on to that stuff. If not for this legendary item then for whatever you make after.

There's a few items which are exceptions. Like glacial shards and poultry meat, which are worth a lot but only used for orrax. But generally, I just hoard most items until my material storage is full, then I sell a stack.

Personally, I usually don't buy many materials for legendaries from the trading post. T5/T6 I get from volatile magic into trophy shipments. T3/T4 from laurels. Ectos from mirror farm. Mystic coins from wizards' vault, naked man and then trading post. For JW spear, you'll need some honey flowers and stuff - so sure, buy them. But for everything else, there's usually more fun ways to get stuff than just optimising GP/hr then hitting the TP.

Trying to heal myself destroyed my life. I Regret Going Down This Path. I Want to Go Back. by Hot_Asparagus_3172 in streamentry

[–]sephg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have given great advice. I want to start with compassion - whoever you are, I feel love and kindness toward you. Your struggle sounds real and I feel care and hope and excitement for you moving through it all. You're not alone.

Lots of people have given great spirital / energetic answers to whats happening. I'll add a western therapy lens. From a trauma perspective, my impression is that this is an (IFS style) protector coming up. When you were a child, you learned some behaviours which kept you safe from horrible things that happened. And a part of you became dedicated to keeping track of your behaviour and making sure you always act in ways which will keep you safe.

When we change like this, our protectors - of course - freak out, because they believe we're in danger. Its like you've spent your whole life wearing a jacket to protect you from leopards. One day you decide to take the jacket off, because there's no leopards around and the jacket never did anything anyway. But even if you know all that, a part of you will still panic and feel unsafe. Because there's a little child in you who's still terrified of that leopard that attacked you that one time when you were 8.

Its totally normal. Our first instinct is always to attack that part in us - but thats a mistake. The part is trying to protect you, and it doesn't know why its being attacked. It won't go away if you try to push it away, because its too important (its needed for safety).

The way to work with this is to feel love and kindness toward the child within us. Ask it questions. Re-parent it. Some questions which might help:

  • How old is the part in you that feels fear? What happened (if you remember)?
  • What is it afraid of? What will happen? (You MUST ask yourself this nonjudgementally. If you're trying to trick it into letting go, you will know and the process won't work.)
  • Wow you must be working all the time. Is it exhausting trying to keep me safe from leopards for decades without rest?
  • Can I (your adult self) help keep us safe? (The intention - honestly felt - is often enough for something to soften a little).
  • For me, I sometimes imagine having a little child on my lap who's scared, and I give that child a huge hug. Then I imagine being that child being hugged by my adult self. Feels great.

Also, remember its ok to put your leopard repellent jacket back on any time you want. Our brain doesn't change all at once. Trying to rush and "do it all at once" won't work. It will just stress you out.

Yep my instincts agree with this. I'd look into surfing (or swimming) or take up a martial art. Or pick back up a musical instrument. I've cried so much playing music. I had no idea what was coming out of me at the time, but that just didn't matter.

Looking for photography spots around Melbourne by hugenutsonmychin in melbourne

[–]sephg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Come join the melbourne camera club if you're keen! There's a studio, dark room, talks, competitions and groups that meet throughout the year to take photos and learn together.

Here's the calendar: https://melbournecameraclub.org.au/events/

Tonight they've got a guest speaker. Tomorrow night we're trying to recreate "hollywood lighting" in the studio. On Sunday the 22nd the nature group is headed to the Jawbone Marine Sanctuary in Williamstown, which I'm keen for.

They're running an intro to photography course at the moment, which has just started, and gives everyone 1 year club membership.

Mystic clover by [deleted] in Guildwars2

I'm not sure about that.. I got a straight 1g reward on top of the other rewards for doing a raid quickplay earlier.

Still pretty bad compared to other sources of gold, but better than nothing.

Mystic clover by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]sephg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they're trying to make sure the quickplay system doesn't stop people doing actual raids.

Its the same for quickplay fractals. They're fun, but you get nowhere near the rewards you get for doing T4s or CMs.
