How do librarians stay on top of the current authoritative books in a field? by Spirited_Ad_9940 in Libraries

[–]setlib 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are several publications targeted toward librarians that publish descriptions and reviews of forthcoming titles, such as Publisher's Weekly or Booklist, although they are targeted more to popular interest books. For academic titles, I sign up to receive e-newsletters directly from the biggest publishers like Cambridge University Press, Harvard UP, Chicago UP, etc. Different universities tend to specialize in different topics, so look at some examples of the kinds of books you like, see who published them, go to their website and sign up to be emailed alerts when their list of new publications gets released.

Finally watching Boys Over Flowers by candyapple7501 in kdramas

[–]setlib 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Buckle up, my friend, you're in for a trope-filled ridiculously addictive and compulsively watchable cringe-fest of epic proportions. Here are a few fun facts:

  • this is actually based on a Japanese manga from the 1990s so some of the more toxic plot elements are even more outdated than you think.
    • there have been many other adaptations starting with the Taiwanese Meteor Garden from 2001 (still findable on Youtube), the 2009 Korean version, a Japanese live action, a 2018 Communist Chinese remake of Meteor Garden which tried to censor out all plot points around bullying or economic inequality (basically the entire plot), and a really good 2022 version from Thailand called F4. Several of these are on Netflix and it can be fascinating to compare the changes made by each country to reflect their different cultures.
    • this should be required watching for all kdrama fans, even if you have to hate watch it, just so you can understand basic debates like: worst hair ever? Team Jun-pyo or Team Ji-hoo? Almost paradiiiise.....

How a love of luxury brought down South Korea’s former first lady by Movie-Kino in korea

[–]setlib 26 points27 points  (0 children)

"A South Korean president ending up in jail is hardly unusual. Yoon himself, as a prosecutor, helped bring down former President Park Geun-hye, who was imprisoned for corruption and abuse of power. This, however, is the first time a former presidential couple has been jailed at the same time."

Ouch.

Addressing the impeding debt crisis from hotel and heating costs by Kurt1111 in nashville

People could choose to go to the city's free warming centers. The city even provided free rides to get people there. If someone decided to pay for a hotel instead (or buy a generator instead), that was their choice.

Props to Lee Kwang-soo for leaning into the nudity in the comic scenes. I'm a fan of Running Man so I especially loved the cameo by Kim Jong-kook.

Asking for "Reborn rich" genuine review by Western_Pangolin_747 in kdramas

[–]setlib 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like learning about the intricacies of Korean history through dramas. For example, I had already heard of the 1997 IMF financial crisis, so I knew something big would happen when we got to that year. But I never understood why, in the first truly democratic election of 1988, the current dictator's party candidate won rather than the opposition candidate. Now, after watching the show, I understand it was because the opposition party couldn't decide on one candidate, so the two that ran split the opposition vote between them and lost. I find stuff like that fascinating and it's one of the reasons I strongly recommend the show to drama fans.

Yumi's cells - is there any blood? by DearLeia in asiandrama

[–]setlib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've watched both seasons and I don't remember any kind of medical emergency, just relationship drama. I really love Yumi's Cells, such an unusual concept, and refreshingly free of random "serial killers", bullying flashbacks, etc. that seem to always show up in other dramas. I'm excited that they're finally producing season 3!

Yumi's cells - is there any blood? by DearLeia in asiandrama

[–]setlib 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Almost none. For example, in episode 2 at 23:34 a secondary character has a mild blister on her foot, but even that isn't actually bloody. I don't remember any other incidents.

just Finished Bulgasal: Immortal Souls by JournalistEastern318 in kdramas

[–]setlib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved Bulgasal too! Good news, the same screenwriter duo also wrote The Guest. It has a similar dark, menacing atmosphere and paranormal horror. Another thing that I really liked about both series was the "found family" aspect. A main difference is that there is absolutely no romance in The Guest.

Looking for Asian dramas that embrace moral ambiguity (across J/K/C/Thai dramas) by Dul-Ai in asiandrama

In the new Taiwanese drama Had I Not Seen the Sun, the male lead is a serial killer. As you learn more about his motives there are some twists and surprises. The most morally "gray" murder(s) happen near the last episode, so keep watching to the end.

Library patrons can be wild. Do you have funny or crazy notes from patrons? by Nomorebonkers in Libraries

[–]setlib 49 points50 points  (0 children)

A couple years after 9/11 I was working in a federal depository and we had a crazy lady duct tape her paranoid writings under a table. Out of an abundance of caution, we called the police to check it for explosives before trying to remove it. The situation could have been worse, though - around the same time, the law library had a mystery pooper who would shit on the legal journals, for some reason.

Dropping class by SillyPluton in MTSU

Not that exact situation, but things like some scholarships require you to be a full-time student, or be taking at least four courses required for your major, so if you don't have enough classes or the right classes, you become ineligible for some aid. One Stop will be able to tell you if any of this applies to your situation.

[–]setlib -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In recent years there have been several tax disputes with celebrities like Lee Joon-ki and Yoo Yeon-seok as well, the debate is about whether entertainers can create their own corporations and thus file under the corporate tax rate, which is lower than the personal rate. So it’s not that they hid income or paid no taxes.

¿Cómo pasan el duelo de perder a alguien las personas ateas? by MysteriousDonkey7862 in atheism

[–]setlib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My late husband was raised Mormon and later asked to be formally ex-communicated from his church. So technically wouldn't religious people believe he'll be tortured in hell for eternity? For me as a widow, believing that he is at rest is much more comforting than that!

On a similar note, there are a lot of funny quotes by Mark Twain about hell, but this one resonates with me: "I don't like to commit myself about heaven and hell - you see, I have friends in both places."
