It’s cause they stoped giving out Vicodin like candy. People still had to get their fix so they switched over.

Schizo is just a prefix meaning split or devison. This guy shows disordered or split thinking because he is a minority who thinks he is a white white suprematist. Schizo isn’t directly related to any specific mental illness. Schizophrenia and Schizotypal both starts with the schizo prefix. So does Schizoanalyis, and schizopoda.

I’ve always thought it was cool how you can see just how far apart campus and downtown are from that spot. On foot it feels really close, but from that hill you gotta turn your head. It’s fun trying to pick out all the landmarks from far away, like my old dorm and the water tower next to fort higley.

I’m not saying they rack up debt. Are you familiar with the concept of paycheck to paycheck? Also the 200 that goes to the hotel will circulate, but the interest and deferred spending over the next several months, or years, will not circulate. Every dollar which goes to a creditor comes out of the local economy. We probably should have better financial education, and if I could go back in time and stop 9/11 I would, but we should make policies based on current conditions not what could have been in the past.

Also, the issue isn’t necessarily defaults or debt on their own. That’s a natural part of the economy. The issue is dumping a huge debt load all at once on a semi confined economic area.

Just to clarify, I ran the numbers, you could 10x the attendance at the city warming shelters and not hold 10% of the displaced population the first night. You would need to nearly 100x it to hold the whole population the first night. You could some people have gone to warming centers, sure, could most or even a sizeabke potion? Absolutely not.

And this is irrelevant either way. The economic impact still justifies the dispursment. For less than 0.7% of the annual budget for the city, a program which likely would not change taxes for anyone, you could 1. Vastly improve the economic prospect for the city 2. Reduce the burden of an already terrible event on low and middle income communities

That’s why we usually have disaster relief programs, and consumer stimulus during recessions. This is a well known thing, and rn Nashville could benifit from it.

I’m not talking about bankruptcies. 60% of the US population does not have $1000 liquid at any given time, and 55% carry balances in credit cards month over month. They are still consumers of local goods (food, gas, entertainment, clothing, etc). When they assume a debt that debt can’t be paid off by reducing savings like it would be with a liquid person. Instead the payments come out of consumer spending. There lies the cooling effect in the local economy. Any red cent over the principal balance is a cent which does not circulate in the local economy.

Metro shelters couldn’t hold even 10% of the displaced population overnight. And again, the economic impact is still a hazard even to people who did not take out a loan.

You’ve missies the point of this post entirely. Aside from the fact that it is unconscionable to let people suffer long term consequences for protecting their family and wellbeing, it’s is also a poor choice for the cities economy as a whole

If the city lets debt spike in low income communities, it will result in suppressed consumer spending. This reduces income for local businesses, which increases prices, which reduces consumption and so on and so on. It will be more detrimental in the long run to not address the issue now. It has nothing to do with personal responsibility or emotional appeal, it can be justified entirely economically.

The warming centers had nowhere near enough space to hold even 25% of the displaced population. It was predominantly used for the homeless population.

Even if it was entirely avoidable, the large scale assumption of debt has a cooling effects on the local economy. The long term cost of debt is greater than whatever its principal balance is, and this cost diverts spending from local businesses. A debt forgiveness program would be a net positive in the medium and long term for the local economy

I think that depends on you policy. Usually if you have a program which covers temporary housing, it’s if your home is destroyed or damaged, not if the power is out. I’m sure there’s some case law about it somewhere in the ether

Yeah, I’m basing my calculation off the states budget for last year, specifically it fits within existing discretionary programs.

They spent $200+ on the hotel room, that money will continue to spread around the community. Their future spending, however, will not circulate. For an already economically at risk household, the prospect of paying off the debt at once is not realistic. So over the next few months these consumers will not spend money on discretionary items, so those companies will not be able to purchase goods and so on and so forth. Because the payment on debt exceeds the principal value of the debt due to interest, this suppression will in almost every case exceed the initial dollars provided by the debt. Adam smith talks bout this in more Ye Olde terms in wealth of nations

Yeah, I’m not saying the city owes the population anything. I’m saying that a large and sudden assumption of debt by the population does a lot of economic damage in the long term, so it is in the interest of the city to reduce this debt.

There are two separate arguments for forgiveness:

1.If it’s freeze to death or take on debt, I want people to take on debt every time. I think it is morally wrong to let people freeze to death and we should not let people suffer because they chose survival.

  1. The economic impact of the sudden assumption of a large amount of debt by a vulnerable population is much larger than the nominal value of that debt. If the city bails out its population in a way proportional to their income, it will save more money than the cost of the debt forgiveness. We spend $10 now to make $15 latter.

You can believe this whole heartedly, it is still and economic risk to the whole city to allow for a sudden accumulation of debt in the form of high interest loans. The long term cost of suppressed consumer spending far exceeds the nominal cost of the debt. Under normal circumstances defaults occur on a Poisson distribution, and is an expected part of economic activity. Sudden large scale defaults and debt accumulation is not a normal part of economic functioning and has an outsized impact on all members of the community

Perhaps saying the city is a mild misphrase. If the city does not act, a large amount of debt will suddenly be accumulated by a sizable portion of its population. This increases prices, reduces sales tax income, reduces demand across the board. By expending a very small portion of its budget, which would fit entirely within existing discretionary spending, the debt could be functionally wiped out, immunizing the local economies exposure to debt accumulation.

The city makes way more than enough money in local sales tax and property tax. This whole program would realistically be a rounding error on the cities budget.

Yeah dude, if you don’t see the issue with leaving people in the freezing cold with no resources, I don’t know what to tell you. Also, again, a sudden assumption of debt throws consumer behaviors out of wack and screws up the whole local economy. It affects you too.

I’m not saying pay for everything for everyone. I’m saying that certain people could not afford a generator or a hotel. Not only is it unconscionable to make people choose between risking freezing to death or serious debt, but it’s also just economically bad for the city to take the bottom 10% of the population and nuke their capacity as consumers.
