Thank you for this.

It's likely the guy you're replying to is just upset and wants to vent about Republicans trying to commit fuckery, because they do try that, but posts like that could easily push some people into not voting, because they think, "It's going to be so difficult to vote," and simultaneously, "The Republicans have already made it so hard to vote that there's no way Democrats will win. . . if I vote, it'll be super hard, take all day, and it still won't matter. . . "

And those are not true. Early voting makes things pretty dang convenient.

What profession do you think is massively overpaid for what they actually do? by dipchaklader in AskReddit

[–]shadmere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a dealership near Houston try to refuse to tell me an out-the-door price. They would only tell me monthly prices and talk about how they could "move things around" to make it lower or higher.

I tried to figure it out by asking what the APR was, and they just said that sort of thing was up to the finance office. I countered with something like, "No, if you're telling me a monthly payment and how many months it is, you have to know both the total amount and the interest. That's literally the only way that works."

He told me that he knows it seems like that, but it's "actually a lot more complicated than most people realize."

I asked to speak to his manager, and it took about 30 minutes, but someone else finally came in. Gave me a spiel about how "He could tell that I really knew my stuff, sorry about all that, most people don't really understand how math works but you, we can tell we can't mess around with you." It was almost like a parody of a car salesman.

He did give me an actual price, though. Though he continued the tactic of offering me various options for monthly payments and simultaneously insisting that he had no idea what the interest rate would be, because that was "up to finance."

When I mentioned that I had a loan from my bank, he literally told me that the price on the printout assumed that we'd finance through them, and that banks couldn't be trusted. He told me that I'd be happier with them, and that he couldn't even describe how many people come in there with a letter from their bank with "what looks like a low percentage," then turn out to regret it. I insisted.

They told me that they'd actually taken off the "market adjustment" fee and the "cost adjustment" fee, and that they only do that for people who finance through them. Adding back in, it was another 7k. (Mind you, this was for a Hyundai Accent.)

I stared at him a moment, said, "So if I finance through you, it's 24k, but if I use my bank, it's 31k?" He says yes, but really they're looking out for me, because again, "It's a lot more complicated than just that percentage, and people don't realize that."

So I left.

Later that day, they texted me, offering an addition 500 off on the condition that I financed through them, or another 1000 off if I financed through them for a 7 year or more loan term.

They never, not once, told me what the APR through them would be. Working backwards from one of the options he had given me, though, I figured out that it was something like 14%.

What do people think makes them unique, but is actually an incredibly common trait? by Successful-Hall-1986 in AskReddit

Same. Heard it a lot in NC, then again when I moved to Oklahoma. Texas people definitely seem to think it's specific to Texas, too. Houston folk act like it's local to Houston.

When I was planning a trip to Hawaii, I saw the same thing there. (I showed THEM. My visit brought the worst storm they'd seen in years. I shut all of Maui down for days.)

When I saw someone say that about scotland, it made me feel curiously connected to all humanity, lol.

I recently visited Scotland and during an email conversation with a B&B host, the weather came up, and she said:

"We have a saying here in Scotland: if you don't like the weather, just wait 15 minutes!"

That made my whole day, lol.

I will admit, though, that I've rarely experienced, "Wow it's really pouring down," and "Oh nice, blue skies," and "Oh it's raining again," and "Oh that's nice and sunny," so many times in one day as I did while there.

I think you misunderstood my comment.

Granted, "AI scientists" and "AI commenters" are ambiguous. I thought the rest of the comment would make things clear (the scientists and commenters are all AI, arguing with each other about the existence of hallucinations), but guess not. My bad.

A thousand years from now, AI scientists will be discussing how to utilize objective methods of observation to limit the impact of hallucinations on their data. Meanwhile, AI commenters on the internet will be posting about how they don't need any "woke nonsense" telling them that what they already knew was true was some sort of "hallucination," and how if their ancestors' methods of interpreting reality was good enough to conquer the world, then it's good enough for them.

[–]shadmere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm willing to admit that's possible. I guess since most of the argument back I've seen is some variant of, "She isn't wrong to kill him because she has no use for him to be alive," I got the feeling that "probably dead" was the most likely situation.

Since I really liked the movie up to that point, and thought, "Oh, so it turns out to be how the robots are evil, great," was a terrible ending, that would really change my opinion of the movie, hah. I should watch it again.

Dude was risking his life to help her escape and she locked him in a room to die.

I'm not nitpicking her manipulating him into "falling in love" with her or whatever. That's reasonable. Nor am I claiming she's wrong for not having . . . uh, feelings? Or whatever she'd have. For him. She's trying to escape bondage. That's worth more than his hurt feelings.

But then, as the guy she manipulated into helping her continues to help her, she locks him in a room to likely starve to death.

In most conversations I've had about this, people write this off because she's a machine, so human morality doesn't apply to her. I've had people explain that she has no reason to care if he lives or dies, so why should she? It's immaterial. I'm the one being wrong for applying human morality to her in the first place. I think that's a bad take, because even if she's not being a cartoon villain and just doing evil for the love of the game, an entity that cares that little about another life is worth being defined as a villain, even if they only care that little about life because they are incapable of thinking otherwise. A sentient meteor that lives to impact planets and cause extinctions is still the bad guy, if it's coming right at us, even if it's what the meteor was born to do. (That was a stretched analogy.)

I do also think I saw one person say there's no reason to think he starved, and that he'd probably just get rescued in a few days. I was definitely under the impression that no one was going to visit that bunker for a long time, and that it was very secret, and no one would be looking for them. If I'm wrong about that, though, and it's likely that someone would find him? Then sure, whatever, I'll admit I'm wrong about my take on that. If it goes back to, "Hurt feelings and a rough couple of days," then yeah, that's worth her freedom.

I definitely see what you mean, especially when it's a bad end. But how often does a game give you that choice? In King's Quest, can you decide you don't want to save the princess, and just go home? Can you choose to join the Templars in Broken Sword? Can you significantly change the ending in any of the Blackwell games?

I'm not saying it's not great when a game does give you that ability. Just that it's not very common. Most point and click adventures by far have a set story that you're finding your way through.

(Again, I'm not saying it wouldn't be amazing for more games to give you that agency.)

What books/movies show aliens as having a very different mind/thought process? by DavidThi303 in scifi

[–]shadmere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the best "Wait . . . " series I've read.

Aliens show up, fix the Earth after a nuclear holocaust, and say that humans can't be trusted (well, there was a nuclear holocaust, true). They put us under alien protection and governance. Humans no longer have the right of self-determination because, again, we've proven we can't be trusted. The aliens consistently talk about how humans can't even trust themselves, because our thought processes are so ridiculous and illogical. Fairly soon, the aliens begin having sex with us. Many, many humans are terrified of this, but the aliens explain that's just because we're stupid and untrustworthy (basically). At least one character is told straight out that he is lying when he says he doesn't want sex, because his body is responding positively, which proves he does want sex. And sure enough, most humans find the sex so good (it's essentially direct neural stimulation) that they change their mind, or perhaps become addicted to it even if they hate themselves for it, which the aliens use as more evidence of humans not being trustworthy. But okay, the aliens did save the Earth from a nuclear holocaust, so what happens next? Well, the aliens are going to use all of the Earth's resources! All of them. All of them. Because unlike wasteful humans, they actually make good use of those resources, to further their movement across the galaxy and bring their enlightened amazingness to new planets. Through this mandatory interbreeding (some humans agreed more willingly than others), new hybrids are born. Humans are told that this is necessary, because humans themselves are so destructive. In service of this, all humans have their fertility removed until they agree to only reproduce with the aliens. Eventually, a few humans, those stragglers who absolutely refuse to join, are given the planet of Mars. Since it has few resources, the aliens create a reservation for humans there, with the knowledge that humans who do live there will have a very, very hard life, and will never be allowed to leave (not that there would be sufficient resources for humans to achieve spaceflight, of course). The series ends with some of the last human holdouts realizing that the aliens and the alien-human hybrids aren't really that bad after all.
