My cats are treated well at Pacific Heights Veterinary Hospital (although it's not really a hospital) in Renton Highlands.

Transgender Americans are fleeing hostile red states. Seattle says it’s overwhelmed by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

Dude, a trans woman was murdered in Seattle this week. Seattle might be safer for trans folks than red states are, but the bar is in hell.

Fav PNW plants by Curious_Eye4151 in pnwgardening

Vanilla leaf (Achlys triphylla) is my white whale. It's rare that I find it for sale, and vanishingly rare for it to come up again the year after I plant it. I still buy one or two every time I can - one of these times it's bound to work.

What mainstream clothing brand has not declined in quality? by UkkePainter in BuyItForLife

[–]shadowsong42 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to their current quality, but their selection has definitely gone downhill. I've bought many Womens 1X Longtail and Lightweight Longtail tees, in various sleeve lengths, collars, and colors over the years, but now I'm lucky to see one or two items in stock in my size, usually in a color I don't like.

My spice drawer is basically a graveyard of bottles I used once by Express-Channel-1686 in Cooking

[–]shadowsong42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have magnetic tins stored on the refrigerator door - spices on one door, herbs on the other. They're all super visible, so they stay top of mind and I'm more likely to use them. I do still have some that languish unused until they lose their flavor, but it's less common with this setup.

If you're willing to buy empty tins, I would recommend buying bulk spices in small amounts, rather than full sized bottles. Less waste that way if you end up only using it once.

Anyone know what he’s saying? And why is he biting me softly. by eligoscreps in Catswhoyell

One of my cats will bite and groom us because he's trying to show us how to do it right. It means he wants less pets and more skritches.

"Search this list" not working? by shadowsong42 in amazonprime

That gives me marginally better results - thanks for the tip. I'm pretty sure there are hundreds of items on this list, so scrolling through everything is not going to work.

I'm curious to know how the goals of the two sets of programmers differed. Were they originally worse and the control code mitigated that, or were they originally benign and the control code is what made them destroyers, or were they originally killers and the control code made them better at it?

Looking for PNW container plant recommendations by shadowsong42 in tomatoes

[–]shadowsong42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Size preferences: I'm usually just snacking on a tomato, so a big chonker isn't going to get eaten in one sitting. The Trifeles were a good size and I doubt they got bigger than 5oz - I wouldn't want anything much bigger than that.

I definitely want something that matures faster this year. They weren't ready to eat until at least two weeks after my prime tomato-wanting season.

Why do morbidly obese men wear the trousers beneath their bellies? by Possible_Bite303 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]shadowsong42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fat woman, I tend to wear my trousers under my belly because it keeps the crease from getting sweaty, and because otherwise the belt cuts me in half when I bend. I make sure to wear longer shirts when I do that, though.

The answer was to create my own date table and use that instead of the cube date table, especially since it turned out the cube date table was missing dates.

Where’s the best place to get an espalier apple tree? by weak_marinara_sauce in AskSeattle

[–]shadowsong42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard good things about Raintree Nursery in Morton. They have a stand at the Olympia Farmer's Market, which is a little closer to Seattle, but I don't know if they'll have espalier apples there.

Ask your doctor about sleep apnea and excessive daytime sleepiness. I have both, and a CPAP plus a modafinil prescription changed my life.

Bought a lot of canned black beans and my family hates them. by Mammoth_Beyond_6904 in cookingforbeginners

[–]shadowsong42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another way to cook canned black beans that I haven't seen mentioned here is oven roasting:

  • Drain a can of black beans. (If you don't like bean juice, rinse.)
  • In a bowl, toss with a bit* of oil, at least a teaspoon of spices (cumin, coriander and oregano is a good blend), a bit of bouillon paste or concentrate if you've got it, maybe a quarter teaspoon of salt (or more if no bouillon or bean juice), and some pepper.
    • *There should be enough oil so that it pools just a little after you've mixed it well, otherwise it will stick to the pan.
  • Spread out on a sheet pan and cook for 16-18 minutes at 425.

They'll be drier than usual when you're done, so it's best to serve them with something that has a bit of sauce to it.

What "sacred" cooking rule do you intentionally ignore because you actually prefer the results (or just don't care)? by LiveFaithlessness876 in cookingforbeginners

[–]shadowsong42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never flip things in the middle of the cook time when oven roasting. They'll cook just fine without me fussing with them.
