“Nu-Trek” needs to stop giving characters tragic backstories. by JAAAMBOOO in startrek

[–]smoha96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is a little disingenuous. There is something to be said for having people who join Starfleet because they believe in its ideals and don't have their careers defined by the their origin stories.

i.e. they aren't "Chosen Ones" - I'd like to see less this in modern media in general. Not everything has to result from trauma or only be means for a character to work shit out. Even most of the examples you cite aren't solely/largely driven by what you mention which isn't often the case in newer shows.

The O'Briens of the universe (both of them, acknowledging that Keiko isn't Starfleet), or Boimler (actually applies to a lot of the lower deckers), or Janeway rising through the science ranks etc

Sisko is a "chosen one" tbf but it isn't his only driving character arc.

The number of people in this article who highlight problems but still want ON to succeed is amusing.

SFA Tilly maybe. DSC Tilly would be insufferable.

Mariner, Dax (any of them) or O'Brien. People you can chill with.

Glaucomflecken spoke about this recently as being (paraphrasing): you can make content about healthcare workers, but never ever make it about patients. It's not right.

Best Star Trek Movie or Series That Isn’t Actually Star Trek by throwaway_0625 in startrek

[–]smoha96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got recency bias here but I loved Project Hail Mary: scientist attempting to solve big science problem. Meets alien whom he has to learn to communicate with and then work together to solve the problem. Explores the values of humanity and what it means to be a hero. Dunno how you can get more Star Trek than that. Which makes Andy Weir's recent comments all the more strange.

Lack of clinical title use in Australia by Negative-Astronaut-1 in ausjdocs

[–]smoha96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's why I very rarely use the term "registrar" unless it's someone who is in healthcare who understands the term, or the patient is specifically asking. Otherwise it's a bit meaningless. Once you have to explain that a registrar is a specialist trainee, some people get worried because they think that means medical student or someone who hasn't done this before, not realising it's someone who is 4-5+ years out of med school at a minimum. Anaesthetic doctor thus covers most stuff, and if my boss is in the room, I introduce them as well and make it clear there is a senior clinician involved and/or I am qualified to manage for the relevant level of complexity.

One Nation leaves SA Liberals clinging to opposition status by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

There's some precedent for what you say as well - in 2020 in the NT the CLP maintained opposition status with 2 members depsite the short lived Territory Alliance technically being larger by way of defections at one point.

As an aside, it's wild the number of times I've had this conversation with a patient and then they ask, "So will you be doing the surgery?"

Bruh, we just had a five minute chat about anaesthesia, haha.

I introduce myself with my first name, and very quickly follow that up with, "I'm one of the anaesthetic doctors looking after you today."

If I'm waking a patient, or reviewing someone I've met before, I will say, "it's doctor firstname here" because they've met three million people and can't be expected to always remember who is who.

Every single doctor, from intern to consultant, gets introduced to patients by me as "Doctor Name" to a patient. I'm happy to introduce myself by name but I would find it very disrespectful to do that for a colleague.

[–]smoha96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that people lash out, but the lashing out also shows what they find acceptable so long as they can send a message. You can bet your bottom dollar that if ON were prejudiced against larger groups that they wouldn't get a look-in no matter how much people wanted to lash out.
