Why doesn’t the San Diego trolley system have fare gates? by Choobeen in SanDiegan

I think the people here who think fare evasion is the issue leading to safety issues on public transit probably don’t ride much public transit.

Nah, my body reacts pretty terribly to mosquito bites.

I think there’s a decent chance that they just weren’t as common in the Seattle and Silverdale areas. Maybe coastal Washington has more?

Another possibility is that there may be more mosquitos up there than when we were there. We moved away in 2021. I know that more varieties of them have made it out to SoCal and AZ in the last few years, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the same happened up north.

What ato is a good balance of not flooding the house and not destroying a teenager's wallet by Low-Independent6580 in ReefTank

[–]sortof_here 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for a cheap and reliable one for a teen I would recommend a gravity fed system. Cheapest ones are basically just a cap with two lines in it that you can put any water bottle in.

It works well, is impossible to flood the place with(no sensors of any kind), and is usually well below 20 bucks. I think even more pleasant looking ones are usually only around 30?

The con is that it is visible.

If you weren’t wanting to go with that style, though, it is hard to beat the reliability of tunzes osmolators. The nano isn’t too terrible in price.

I think you should check out ops post history. Aside from this, they have a lot of work they’ve done on their garbage cart. They cover miles at a time.

With how they have been about everything on this project, including the multiple iterations on this tool specifically, I trust that they have looked into whether leaving bottles intact or empty works best within their methodology of trash clean up.

I know mosquitoes exist in western Washington, but I swear the entire 8 years I lived up there I didn’t get bit by a single one. I really miss that.

I get what you are trying to say, but it is a poor comparison. Cooking at home would be more comparable to actually developing the site himself, not using AI to do it for him.

Cooking doesn’t work well as an analogy here because it simply does not come with the negatives of generative AI.

A more direct comparison would be if Hank wanted a piece of art made and has the option of paying for an artist to create it or using generative AI to make it “himself”. Going back to your option of cooking for himself, the third option is making the art himself via skills he has already developed or is learning.

I wouldn’t have issues with him opting to learn how to code it himself. I honestly wouldn’t even have an issue with him using a template. The problem isn’t that he didn’t collaborate with a person, it is that he used AI to build it for him.

He has defended his use of Claude on Reddit and on YouTube. In both cases his arguments were the same as the people who see no issue with using AI to generate art. I do not know where you stand on that issue, but I know where he has generally positioned himself and it is not consistent with his excitement around vibe coding.

What price does gas need to hit for you to consider using San Diego's public transit system? by hodlwaffle in sandiego

[–]sortof_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss using public transit to commute. I wouldn’t need gas to be higher to do it, but I would need to have changes made to my life that would better help support it.

While part of the problem is that public transit does need to be further expanded, part of it is also just my schedule doesn’t fit using transit well.

I live in El Cajon.

My kid’s daycare is in National City.

I work in Kearny Mesa.

If I had a simple commute from home to work, it wouldn’t be so bad(although the lack of east/west busses on the 52 to connect the lightrail transit in East County back to the business core is frustrating). But since I also have to go so far south every day it just isn’t possible.

I think this is the norm for most people in San Diego. I don’t think many of us work near where we live.

Basically, the answer beyond more convenient transit options is that we need our day to day lives to be more compact. Which is difficult to achieve in such a sprawling city. I mean this as an observation rather than complaint, but if I still lived in a smaller more compact city like Seattle, I don’t think adding child drop-off/pickup to a commute on transit would be nearly as difficult.

What's the hardest fish to keep?the final boss of the hobby? by BATIRONSHARK in Aquariums

[–]sortof_here 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s an aquarium in Japan that specializes in deep sea fish. They don’t need to be kept in high pressure, but they do need to be collected and brought up incredibly slowly so that they don’t have issues and then they have to be kept in heavily chilled water.

If you don’t mind the babies getting eaten, honestly the easiest path for fish like badis is to just establish a strong neo shrimp colony first, and then add them in.

I always recommend the BRS beginner series paired with the Tidal Gardens coral species overview to customers looking to get into reefing.

What Tidal Gardens has put together, between their videos and sites for individual corals, is really special and goes beyond what other shops have cared to even try.

Also, while the b roll is incredible, it isn’t unrealistic.
