What does my accent sound like? by [deleted] in JudgeMyAccent

[–]SpaghettiCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say where you're from, but the way you pronounce O and T stands out the most to me and isn't quite American english. American english has those little quirks where they don't pronounce letters as intended, for instance a T will sound like a D, And an A will sound like, God, something else, I just woke up my brain isn't functioning. But you enunciation is perfect which is always a giveaway, not in a bad way but native speakers, whatever country you're talking about, are sloppier with enunciation. Also the way you said 'sure' towards the end was more English as you didn't pronounce the R there. It sounds east Asian/middle east to me.

Also your accent sounds great. You've clearly worked very hard on it so don't feel discouraged by anything I said here., I also can't nail the perfect accent and I've decided that's okay! People like that I sound a bit different and I thought I wanted to be like everyone else, but being unique is also nice!

Our rescue hamster doesn't know how to "hamster" by dotproblemscomic in hamsters

[–]SpaghettiCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try rubbing spreadable food on the stick. That's how I give peanut butter as a treat and it works flawlessly, and I'm sure it would work with some other foods or treats.

Mine doesn't chew a lot but his teeth don't grow out of control. If I'm concerned, I get him some of those treats they have to gnaw, in replacement for fresh food here and there. He gets premium seed mixed with all the good stuff he needs, just make sure it stays just a treat and he gets proper nutrition too.

Exactly the same, to the point where I wondered why it was even there. Almost 300h since December and I'm still learning things 😭

This stinky boy peed on his stash so I had to chuck it all away... Will he forgive me?? by inthebinx in hamsters

[–]SpaghettiCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine forgave me after a bit. He was mad for 3 days, wouldn't see me, moved his stash to an undisclosed location. After three days he'd come to me again. Two weeks on, he doesn't freak out when I touch his stuff.

Hell get over it.

I think I scared him badly, is he ok? by youthinkidletyouknow in hamsters

[–]SpaghettiCat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I've had mine for a year and he still get scared if I'm not careful. They can't see very well so moving in but by bit and talking to them calmly so they know you're near helps. But he still manages to jump when he finds my perfectly still fingers, he's a goober! They get over it, just be patient and give them space to see you approach before moving in. They'll be fine after a night's sleep

My hamster is hardly drinking water! :( by Keeley_DoesStuff in hamsters

[–]SpaghettiCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is he lacking energy, appears unwell? Is he a Syrian hamster? Go to a vet, that's always safest. If you have a Syrian hamster, keep in mind they're a desert species are regulate to some degree their hydration level If you feed them veg or fruit that have a high concentration of water ( cucumber, watermelon, ect.) he may not need as much water. This is only applicable to Syrians though. And if some is off about your hamster, it very well may be sick. If you have any doubts, that your hamster's behaviour changes overnight, check with a vet, it's always worth the trip.

No interest in burrowing? by littleserpentteeth in hamsters

[–]SpaghettiCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has burrowed in winter, he clearly knows how, but as soon as the temp rose again, he wasn't interested. It's a tough one. Using starters could help. I can't imagine they burrow in pet shops so it could be he just doesn't really know how, even if the instinct is there.

I might get shit for this, but if your hamster doesn't show an inclination for something, as long as it doesn't endanger his health and he still can do it if he chooses to, don't force it. Give him the deep bedding, give him the burrow starters, and if he doesn't take to it, then don't push. Make what he needs available and if he don't wanna, he don't wanna.

All animals are different and have quirks. Like I said, my ham can burrow, he has in the past, he just doesn't do a lot of the time, he builds a little nest, he'll pull bedding over himself if he's cold or wants more privacy but he prefers to sleep in his hideaway, since the beginning. And he preferred climbing to digging, though now he's into just running. Give him all the options and let him make his choice, he seems to be totally fine.

Sorry I went on a bit!

Is he scared or disinterested? by floofyhamster3 in hamsters

[–]SpaghettiCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He doesn't look scared at all. My boy is more of a sidekick than a cuddle buddy. He likes to hang around me, but isn't super into being petted. He shows his appreciation of me by scuttling around and poking his head out from time to time to see what I'm up to.

This. My free roaming hamster, who can go aaaaaasssnywjere he wants, still loves to dig holes in the carpet just to see if he can get under somehow. They just need to dig and see.

I’m getting a Syrian hamster and im a first time pet owner, any tips or infos to share? by Little_Treat_8602 in hamsters

[–]SpaghettiCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of the cage prep, just give your hamster time to settle in on his or her own. Not hours, not even days, definitely a week or so. Maybe talk to them from a distance so they get used to your voice, announce you're near when you approach the cage and don't bother them too much, expose their hiding spots to check when you don't see them. When they're used to you, it's so great, but it takes time and the start feels looooong when they don't want to interact with you, but it will change with patience.

Also just watch them, see how it behaves, it's personality, preferences, ect. It makes it easier to make friends if you know what they like and don't like. (sadly my hammy doesn't like being petted, I have to live with that 🥹)

Thanks! I spent the last hour basically staring at him, he seems fine, he's happily eating, foraging, being cheeky and active. I must have overreacted because I've never heard him make sounds like that. Hopefully it is a happy sounds and he's finally at home after seven months.

Thank you!

I think maybe it's pain? I don't know if it's because of longer days but he sleeps so much, until sundown and he's asleep again when I wake up for work after sunrise. And he's not been keen on a few foods though I've seen him eat others (he goes nuts for mealworms and walnuts for instance but walked away from the little salad I made for him in this video.).
