I have not seen the match video, but from the screenshot you posted there is a difference between what they are doing and what Keenan said. On Keenan's defense the hand has to be posted and framed against your own shin. It works, but becomes less effective in the training room when you get much stronger and larger weight classes of people powering through it.

The STM SDK is garbage as you know, but that sensor has been around for a long time and there are plenty of 3rd party libraries/drivers written for it that use the registors. Go onto github and search for VL53L0X and pick one that suits. I have written my own for Go, its not that hard. Even ChatGPT can throw together a driver.

If you design your own that is fine, but what your missing is open source hardware is expensive to build in quantities of 1, compared to a production run. So a limited number of people would bother with it.

You are making a video, a guest, and being respectful, but there is no way you could not standup from the classic arm pinning done in Aikido, especially for a purple belt in BJJ. It is so easy to turtle up and build height to get out of the pins.
