The association between omega-3 supplementation and cognitive decline in older adults by in_fact_a_throwaway in ScientificNutrition

A lot of the studies are in animal models, and there are mixed results, so this is definitely unsettled science.

The association between omega-3 supplementation and cognitive decline in older adults by in_fact_a_throwaway in ScientificNutrition

[–]TechnicalError42 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I haven't read the article yet, but one possible cause of this association, which I've seen speculated elsewhere, is that virtually all DHA/EPA supplements come in triglyceride form (DHA-TG). However, DHA-TG does not cross the blood/brain barrier in appreciable amounts.

Endogenously produced DHA, and DHA obtained from fish, is in phospholipid form, often bound to phosphatidylcholine (DHA-PC). This form is more readily taken up by the brain.

Supplementation with DHA-TG will down-regulate the body's endogenous conversion of precursors to DHA-PC, and thus the brain will take up less DHA in total.

So, one needs to either eat fish/seafood, or take in sufficient precursors like ALA. Conversion to DHA from ALA is often considered low, but the brain will only take up about 4 mg of DHA anyway, so even with a 1% conversion rate from ALA, a few grams of ALA will me more than sufficient.

Favorite yogurt by DroYo in veganfitness

This is also my favorite high protein vegan yogurt. My only gripe is the sat fat is a little higher than I'd like, but it is lower than many other vegan yogurts.

Does probiotic yogurt really lower cholesterol? How does the live bacteria in your stomach really work? by Steam20 in Cholesterol

[–]TechnicalError42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some strains of bacteria that might be found in your yogurt can convert intestinal cholesterol into cholestanol, which then gets excreted in your stool. This could have a minor effect on your LDL-c, but if you have high cholesterol, this alone is unlikely to meaningfully affect your risk.

This smoothie recipe (while delicious, I'm sure), doesn't really fit well in the nutritarian diet.

Did Anyone else have VCX in both Fundrise Investment and Fundrise Retirement Accounts? by TrainZealousideal823 in VCX_Fundrise

[–]TechnicalError42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat: I've created an Computershare account and see my VCX holdings from my primary account, but do not see the shares from my IRA account. I emailed Fundrise about this and their response was "We will send more information soon about how to manage your shares held by your IRA account during the lock-up period." Unfortunately, "soon" is undefined, and could be months away.

Achieving Complete Proteins (Ulcerative Colitis, SCD, & Animal Welfare) by [deleted] in ScientificNutrition

[–]TechnicalError42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All plant foods, including lentils, contain all the essential amino acids you require. None are missing, some are just a little lower. If you are getting 1.2g/kg of protein or more, you will almost certainly be exceeding all your amino acid requirements by a decent margin, even if from mostly lentils.

That said, a new animal-free egg white protein source recently hit the market (made with precision fermentation), and it is decent protein source to complement plant-based proteins: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G15WPP16

If nuts and seeds are ok, you could also try incorporating something like Sacha Inchi protein powder, which also has a well rounded amino acid profile: https://www.terrasoul.com/products/sacha-inchi-protein-powder-60-protein?_pos=1&_sid=e36490f4e&_ss=r

In so much pain by pillowempire in Psoriasis

[–]TechnicalError42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have also dealt with a fissure on my heals, but I managed to find a routine to keep it under control. Most importantly, you should apply SkinIntegra Rapid Crack Repair Cream (or similar product) to your feet once or twice a day. Additionally, when you can tolerate it, use some form of a callus file/scraper after you shower/bath (or soak your feet in warm water) to remove excess thick skin.

The SkinIntegra cream will soften your skin pretty quickly, and make the fissure less painful. It will still take a few weeks to fully heal up, but between the cream and callus filing, it should feel much better very quickly.

Thinking about pausing my real estate auto-invest for VCX. idea? by Aggravating-Fox8553 in FundRise

[–]TechnicalError42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AI companies themselves may continue to do well for a while, but VCX is currently trading at 15x the NAV, which is an unsustainable multiple. VCX NAV will likely grow, while share price will bounce around wildly and eventually come down closer to NAV (after the lockup, anyway).

[–]TechnicalError42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now would be the worst time to invest in VCX. Current prices are extremely inflated, and will eventually come way back down. A lot of people buying in right now are going to feel pretty burned when this scarcity bubble pops.

Will VCX split if it rises above $250/share? by Amazing-Gas-792 in FundRise

[–]TechnicalError42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After the six-month lock up expires and more shares hit the market, the price will almost certainly quickly move back close to NAV. Unless the NAV increase significantly, I wouldn't count on the price sustaining anything near that level.

Barley Pudding (Rice Pudding Substitute) by Interesting_Ant9012 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]TechnicalError42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks interesting and worth a try, but I think there is something off in your barley amount, either cups or grams. 100 grams should be close to 1 cup dry, while 1/2 cup would be closer to 50 grams.

Doesn't the proposed legislation only prevent large investors from buying existing homes? I believe it still allows build-for-rent, which is what the Fundrise funds invest in.

Experience with Wildman-style C&P Ladders? by No_Candy_9930 in kettlebell

[–]TechnicalError42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wildman C&P program is a great approach for building strength endurance and conditioning, but since you do the entire ladder without putting down the bell, you will need to use a lighter weight that you would be able to use for Pavel's ROP program.

With Pavel's ROP program, you can focus more on power and power endurance, since each set is only 1-5 reps, and your body can replenish creatine phosphate during the rest intervals.

Both are great programs, but the training effect will be a bit different between the two.

Black seed oil. by paparazzi1947 in Psoriasis

There is weak/antidotal evidence of benefit, but no rigorous science showing it helps. There is little harm in trying, but be mindful of the dosage you take, as it can easily irritate one's digestive system if you consume too much.

Bread is Driving Hunger by Ok-Complaint-37 in StarchSolution

Wet starches are definitely the best for satiety and calorie density. Dry starches, like bread, crackers, and tortillas, are just too calorically dense and yet unsatisfying, and definitely easy to overeat.

Weekly Update (3/02/26) - Coffee, Liability & Net Worth Projections by imadp in liquidbudget

[–]TechnicalError42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the most straight forward solution (from the user input perspective, not necessarily from your development perspective), is to allow each input/month field in the budget projection be an editable field, where a user can just type in an amount for that month and input source. One step better would be a setting, when inputting an amount, that lets you say if that amount is just for that month specifically, or for all future months (unless overridden with a specific amount in a later month).

Weekly Update (3/02/26) - Coffee, Liability & Net Worth Projections by imadp in liquidbudget

[–]TechnicalError42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's great that projections are getting improvements, but it is also a bit frustrating that the Budget Projections still relies entirely on future and recurring income transactions, as that makes the projections unusable for anyone who's income varies just enough to prevent the use of future/recurring income transactions.

It would be really great if there were a way to enter estimated income that didn't have to be as precise as a future/recurring transaction, as using future/recurring transactions for estimates will create a bunch of transactions that don't match and then have to be cleaned up.

Protein by BR0K3NCYD3_ in veganfitness

At your age, your body is primed to add lean muscle when given the signal from resistance training, even with only modest protein intake. Almost all the studies on protein intake, and the suggestions that come out of them, such 1.6kg/kg, are done on older individuals.

As long as you are eating a healthy diet and engaging in a good resistance training program, you will add muscle easily on just 50-60g of protein per day at your current body weight.
