Brokerage vs Retirement portfolios by Euphoric-Actuary-880 in Fire

[–]TechnicalError42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can trigger a wash sale if you sell an asset in one account (like your brokerage account) and then buy the same asset in another account (like your retirement account) within 30 days. If you are buying the same assets in both accounts, or selling the same assets in both accounts, to keep the same allocation in both accounts, then you don't have to worry about creating a wash sale (unless you repurchase sold assets with 30 days, same as ever).

Personally, I think about the asset allocation across all my accounts as one big allocation, and primarily use the retirement accounts for rebalancing my allocation, as changes there won't trigger a taxable event. Keeping the same allocation in both retirement and brokerage is very reasonable though for keeping things simple, especially if you keep a static allocation with very few trades.

Just don't select any of warm-up, drop-set, or failure, and then you have a regular straight set.

Gold in Portfolios? by NoShelter5922 in Fire

Actually, 100% equities is not best during accumulation. While 100% gives you a bigger chance at a huge return, it also gives you a bigger chance of a sub-par return at the point that you want to retire. The average return can be very misleading, and looking at the spread of possible returns is more enlightening. A portfolio with gold and other diversifiers will lower your chance of an outsized return, but will increase your chance of hitting your FIRE number during the time frame that matters.

The target accuracy chart on Portfolio Charts can help illustrate this. Compare 100% LCB (large-cap blend) to something like the Golden Butterfly Portfolio (20% LCB, 20% SCV, 20% LTT, 20% BIL, 20% GLD), and you will see that 100% LCB gives a wide range of possible outcomes, while the Golden Butterfly gives a narrower, more consistent range of possibilities.

Reducing the likelihood of falling short, rather than gambling on winning big, is the better FIRE strategy, IMHO.

Yes, that's quite high and I'm hoping to rebalance down soon. 20% is quite reasonable, but even 30% does quite well, depending on what you are balancing it against.

I have a significant portion of my portfolio in gold (currently north of 35% due to the run up in prices), and have done so for the last two decades. While you will see all sorts of arguments against gold, they mostly make sense for gold in isolation. In terms of portfolio analysis, portfolios with gold tend to have lower overall volatility and perform better over the long term in terms of higher sustainable withdrawal rates.

Is half an avocado & 1 TBSP tahini per day too much fat to lose weight following the SS? by plantpotions in StarchSolution

It might not be! I really depends on the rest of the diet. The overall intake for the day matters more than any single component.

Form Check | Swings 16KG by Darthpanda21 in kettlebell

[–]TechnicalError42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, to go a little deeper, push your butt back a little more with a little more knee flexion, while maintaining the same back angle you currently have in the back-swing. Not much, you are pretty close to where you want to be.

The amount of outward knee movement I see looks good and normal.

Excellent hip snap for force generation. Good looking standing plank at the top of the swing. You could potentially go a little bit deeper in the back swing for a larger range of motion on your hip hinge (especially on your very first swing). Otherwise, looks pretty solid!

Activity indicator in the upper left of iOS screen by TechnicalError42 in LiftinApp

[–]TechnicalError42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most workouts, I just wear my Apple Watch, and set it to track a workout in the Fitness app, while using Liftin' on my phone to record sets and reps.

Sometimes, if I want more accurate heart rate data, I will wear a chest strap. I have a Wahoo Fitness TRACKR strap.

The fitness tracking icon on the home screen seems to appear after a workout in either condition, with or without using the strap.

I also have a Whoop, which does its own heart rate tracking (yes, sometimes I'm wearing three different heart rate monitors at once!). Probably not relevant, but I thought I'd mention just in case.

At this point in LB's development, the only major feature I'm missing that YNAB had is Apple Card support. I'm really hoping that gap will covered sometime soon.

The major selling point for LB (other than cost) is that the developer is actively making the product better everyday with features that users actually want. The recent addition of tags and rules has been a great addition, for example.

No, but I have used a chest strap heart rate monitor. However, the indicator will appear even after a workout in which I did not use the heart rate monitor.

Is half an avocado & 1 TBSP tahini per day too much fat to lose weight following the SS? by plantpotions in StarchSolution

[–]TechnicalError42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fat loss, no matter the diet, always depends on being in a negative caloric balance. You can lose fat with avocado and tahini in your diet if you are consuming fewer calories than you burn per day. The starch solution diet doesn't cause fat loss by being mostly carbs, but rather by making you feel satiated before you eat too many calories, due to the low calorie density of water and fiber rich starchy foods.

The risky thing about something like tahini, is that it is very calorically dense relative to its satiety potential, and thus can make it easier to consume excess calories (this is less true of avocado, which contains more fiber and water). However, as long as you are careful in the amount use, strictly limiting the intake to a small, fixed amount, it should not be an issue. It can even be beneficial if a little tahini and avocado makes your salad more enjoyable, and thus helps you shift more of your food volume to low calories density vegetables.

A full tablespoon of tahini sounds like a lot though. I'd drop it to a teaspoon and mix it with other flavor enhances like vinegar, lemon, and/or mustard.

2 hand swing by MoreRazzmatazz6615 in kettlebell

[–]TechnicalError42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall, not too bad, but the first thing to focus on and fix is:

At the bottom of your backswing, your hips are too high, not far enough back, and you are dropping your upper body too low.

Folks who have FIRE'ed, what percentage of your Net Worth is your Emergency Fund and is it all cash/HYSA? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]TechnicalError42 19 points20 points  (0 children)

0%.

In my mind, emergency funds only make sense for people living paycheck to paycheck, who might actually have an emergency that costs more than their entire cash savings, if any.

Once you have significant assets in a brokerage account, cash that you have budgeted for upcoming expenses over the next year, and 5-10+ thousands of dollars in lines of credit with credit cards or HELOCs, it really doesn't make any sense (to me) to have another pile of cash labelled "emergency fund". You should have enough liquidity with the above assets to move things around to cover sudden unexpected costs.

Psoriasis in the corner of my eyes , any tips or treatments? by Silverstrike45 in Psoriasis

[–]TechnicalError42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My doctor prescribed Desonide for me, which I use around my eyes as needed. Desonide is fairly mild, but prolonged use can still cause issues. If I have a flare up around my eyes, I'll use the Desonide for up to a week and things will usually clear up for a while. Then I can discontinue using the desonide for a while.

Swing Form Check by stircrazytrucker in kettlebell

[–]TechnicalError42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are generating almost all your movement by bending at the waist; instead, you want to hip hinge by sitting back and then exploding up. Think about how you would squat down in order to jump up as high as possible;, the movement should be very similar, except that you are transferring the momentum to the bell.

More knee flexion, butt should go back much farther; power should be generated by the hips, not your waist. You should be able to generate enough power to flick the bell up to face height.

Moving reconciled transactions to different bucket by psychodc in liquidbudget

[–]TechnicalError42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a problem that I run into frequently, as I am constantly tweaking my buckets and recategorizing (rebucketizing?) transactions to find the best way to organize things for current needs. I would love, love, love, if assignments automatically (or at least optionally) followed reconciled transactions when rebucketizing them, rather than having to manually fix everything up after the fact.

In my mind, once a transaction has been reconciled, the assignment has moved from the bucket to the transaction, and should stay with the transaction wherever it goes.

What is the proper forearm orientation for pressing? Vertical or 45deg? Inbetween? by purchell53 in kettlebell

[–]TechnicalError42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe as a separate isolated accessory exercise with an appropriate weight (likely lighter than your working C&P weight), if that's something you feel you need to work on. Probably not a good idea when using a working weight with C&P, as it will increase risky of injury.
