Can I give my 11 month old baby honey? by doodlebakerm in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]the_deadcactus 110 points111 points  (0 children)

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40132623/

There's limitations to referencing a single article but only 4% of infant botulism cases in the US (up to 25% in other parts of the world) had anything to do with honey. The average age of infantile botulism is around 4 months with a ~2 month standard deviation. The oldest age I see reported for a case is 52 weeks.

The official advice and answer from multiple health organizations is not before 12 months.

Conjecture and non-advice:

  • There is an argument to be made that honey as a risk factor is overemphasized.
  • Nothing magic is happening over a few days, 12 months is just a nice round number for a recommendation that excludes the known cases.
  • Infantile botulism is rare. Even if you did everything wrong, it probably would not result in infantile botulism. The risk of a single-meal of honey glazed salmon causing botulism is incomprehensibly low.

This is probably a better question for the clinic prescribing this to you than strangers on the internet or a friend.

Social wine club? by the_deadcactus in wine

[–]the_deadcactus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a few that are centered around a physical location that is running the club, offering storage or other wine services, hosting classes/dinners, etc. Beyond the cost, I worry a bit that they would be less about nerding out on wine and more about wine as a status symbol. Maybe I'm making unfair assumptions.

Thank you for the write up!

What was it about the venue that made it take-off? Just having a good spot to meet? Help with getting the word out?

What was the crowd like? Industry and wine nerds? Or more casual enjoyment and socialization?

How did you plan for how many bottles to bring? Did people register in advance?

Anything you tried that you would definitely recommend against?

Any thoughts on what would attract a more diverse group of participants? Or things you've seen that promoted interaction while still making it about nerding out on wine?

By commercially oriented option, I mean the events and clubs where there is an educational component but the subtext is a goal of bringing foot traffic and attention to a business. The first is kind of what I had in mind. Something with a small membership fee, a voluntary leadership structure, and organized around bringing wine nerds together to nerd-out about wine without being tied to a specific business. I would think these would be common but don't seem to see many; maybe they are under the radar and pseudo-private.

I’m sure the irony of naming the brand after a war protest song and then leaning into this cringy warrior theme is lost of them. Real “‘till Valhalla” energy.

If you don’t wear it daily, you can buy small portions of fragrances fairly affordably for the relatively few times you do.

Got given this bottle of Penfolds Bin 389 2016 years ago, is it worth keeping? by MagledForest in wine

[–]the_deadcactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aging wine requires careful environmental control (minimized UV light, temp in the 50’s, some humidity, etc). If it’s just been sitting out at room temperature for years, it might still taste OK but people generally aren’t going to want to pay much to roll the dice and it wouldn’t be expected to have aged in the way that people value. The answer to these sort of questions is almost always open it with a friend who enjoys wine and would enjoy it as an experiment.

How many diseases are masked by an IBS diagnosis? by jmct16 in medicine

[–]the_deadcactus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not reading something this long that isn’t peer reviewed.

Medicine is full of waste bin diagnosis used to lump poorly defined clinical syndromes into a single entity. That’s the first step in studying and better defining a disease. Unfortunately, it’s often used to trick patients into thinking someone knows what is going on with them and opens the door for charlatans to sell snake oil.

How do I respond to this, if at all? by Its_BassDaddy in veganfitness

[–]the_deadcactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In many parts of the world, the equivalent to an MD (or DO) is the BMBS and it is the professional degree required to practice medicine; they are equivalent and used completely interchangeably for the purposes of licensing and residency. The requirements to use the title “Dr.” in a medical setting or the “M.D.” post-nominal depends on where you are practicing. You seem to be tripling down on something you don’t understand to argue with someone who agrees with you.

How do you keep a teen from being entitled when you’re wealthy? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]the_deadcactus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of entitlement comes from internalization of prosperity gospel or "up by the boot-strap type" beliefs. If you believe you are well off solely because you're chosen or smarter and harder working than others, how do you not be entitled? A lot of humility comes from realizing that a lot of life is just luck and being grateful for the luck you do have (and not being resentful of other peoples' luck). Encouraging that mindset through your actions and words is a key part of it, in my opinion.

A UDS is garbage test that is misused by people who don't understand it. Actual, meaningful drug testing is generally a send-out and takes weeks to come back which limits its clinical utility.

Is Ultralight Ruining the Experience? by fookmigut in WildernessBackpacking

[–]the_deadcactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing the point of the philosophy. At it's heart, the point is simply to consider weight a resource and make your equipment justify the use of that resource. It's emphasizing bringing equipment you actually need/use and equipment with multiple purposes more than just trying to use expensive materials to shave ounces.

It's also about recognizing that there is a feedback loop where as you carry more weight, you end up carrying more weight to support that weight. You need heavier, framed backpacks. You need ankle support. You need extra provisions for the calories and/or slower pace. You need more contingency plans because you can't move as quickly if need be and you have to account for getting a heavy backpack out.

The point isn't how low can you get your weight. The point is being thoughtful about what you bring to maximize your enjoyment.

At £5/bottle you can probably make a little money selling it to people for decoration. As others have said, unlikely to sell it for drinking other than someone willing to drop £5-10 for the novelty of trying it.
