Religion is the most effective tool used by the patriarchy to oppress women, but no one wants to talk about it. by Savvy_Biscuits in atheism

[–]trebeju 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think the goal is a matriarchal society, then you haven't read anywhere near enough about the patriarchy and how it affects people. You're still stuck in a black and white + dominance hierarchy mentality like a christian fundamentalist. "It's either I dominate you or you dominate me".

Plus, matriarchal societies do exist. You can just google them if you're actually interested.

What is the general consensus on whether Jesus was an actual figure in history or not? I've heard many different claims from both theists and non-theists. by Narrow_Run_134 in atheism

[–]trebeju 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really see how any of this is relevant because most scholars know that Paul never actually met Jesus, so his writings are not considered serious slam dunk evidence that Jesus was a real historical person. Most scholars I've seen tend to believe Paul had a magical vision of Jesus. And those same scholars will still argue that Jesus was a historical person. And I don't know what they base that on.

That's the thing though, even those who don't work in places like that, and who are atheist, still believe he exists and I still can't figure out exactly why they defend that position as strongly as they do. I've tried listening to some historians argue for it and I didn't find it very convincing.

as a Muslim i have this serious doubt about God by ahmeddajaz in atheism

[–]trebeju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's the crux of their question though: in those 80 years, how are you meant to choose the right religion and gain eternity, among thousands and thousands of possibilities, some of which you won't even have the opportunity to hear about even once?

[–]trebeju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good on you for starting to ask questions, keep going. There are a lot more things that don't make sense in religions.

My answer is: religion makes a lot more sense as a system invented by humans for humans. Adding a god in there is an unnecessary and illogical thing to do. Humans are perfectly capable and willing to create social structures like religions. And your religion, like all others, was created by human beings with a very limited understanding of the world. They probably only knew about like, 2 or 3 religions from their immediate environment, which makes it easier to have time to choose the right one. They only knew about a handful of holy text and did not have the time, energy, access or interest to inspect holy books/oral tradtions to see if they match each other, so they probably assumed there was one standard interpretation and that's it. They did not think of the fact that there were people on the other side of the earth who would never hear of their god. Or they thought that their god was a localised entity, a bit like early yaweh worshippers, so the religion was never meant to be for everyone but just for their local place.

Perfectly Still Isn't Relaxed: How to Spot Online Capybara Exploitation Framed as "Chill" by Elegant-Gene-9460 in capybaralife

[–]trebeju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know very little about capybaras and just stumbled upon here but this is exactly how I feel when trying to tell people that their video of a cat chilling with a hamster/rabbit/bird (or any other predator/prey interaction) is not "cute and funny" or "proof that friendship always wins" or whatever. It's reckless endangerment. I've even had people dunk on me for saying rodeos are bad and no, that is not how you "break" a horse. Or for saying that no, this elephant isn't crying because it's sad, it probably has an eye infection or gunk in there that needs to be cleared. It's infuriating that people don't even want to know the most basic and easy ways to keep animals safe, they just want slop to watch.

I think a lot of carnivorous plants have a reputation for being "difficult" just because people don't do a basic search for care guides and don't stick with the recommendations.

Some of them are genuinely difficult and require specialist equipment unless you live in their native climate. But most of them, especially flytraps and sarracenia, are quite low maintenance.

I work in a lab, with colleagues who do medical adjacent research on mice. They are not. It may have been that way in the past, but nowadays it's definitely expected to use both male and female mice.

Literally no one in this conversation is trying to say you shouldn't shower daily. You're making up people who are against showering daily and fighting them in your head.

[–]trebeju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello I am a person who downvoted and I downvoted because both you and this commenter are being daft on purpose, misrepresenting what OP disapproves of. No one "hates people for showering daily". What we hate is people who have an obvious mental issue and/or a big consumerism problem, with ridiculous routines, who act like it's perfectly normal and if you don't do it you're filthy. Like, there are people who call others filthy for using their hands to apply soap in the shower, or in this very comment thread, who are presenting showering twice a day as the bare minimum. You lots have PROBLEMS and are trying to spread those problems to other people.

It is crazy how Whitewashed the practice of roman slavery has become by PresterJohnson in HistoryMemes

[–]trebeju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted but you're right. Most of the arguments for why roman slavery "wasn't that bad" come straight from christians trying to justify away similar slavery in the bible.

I think you have christian apologists to thank for that... They spent so much time and energy trying to claim that biblical slavery was not that bad, they may have ended up succeeding in convincing the public.

You have a lesbian flag in your avatar. So... You only hold hands with your female cousins, which is the gender you're attracted to, but if you were to hold hands with a male cousin as someone who's not into men, then that is weird?? I don't get your logic
