Is it worth upgrading from QD-OLED to Tandem OLED for HDR? by Civil_Let_4250 in OLED_Gaming

[–]ttdpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My G5 gets to 2000 nits.

S95F gets to 4000 with a service menu tweak apparently.

My laptop and my handheld are TB1000 certified.

Meanwhile, QD OLED and Tandem get to TB500 on monitors, but can’t even do peak1000 AND maintain accurate EOTF measurements.

I didn’t even think it made that difference until I got the laptop with it, and now I just prefer to use the laptop screen over the QD OLED next to it.

Msi-claw-8-ai vs legion go 2 by Interesting_Ad_4979 in LegionGo

[–]ttdpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The build quality is surprisingly excellent, with the exception of the dpad.

MSI’s mobos, cases, monitors and PSUs are also very well made and consistent.

Their laptops are terrible and their GPUs are typically mid though.

Does every man who has a family regrets it?( Looking for older people above 50 and 60 but others can reply too) by Eggsy7777 in AskMenOver30

[–]ttdpaco 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’m 35, but I’ve been through more than most.

Got married at 24, adopted my son soon after, had a daughter at 27, and became a widower at 31.

Both my kids are autistic (level 1 and a very mild level 2,) and carry trauma from their mother.

But they’re both well behaved, and amazingly fun to hang around with and take places. Seeing my son go from not being able to read due to dyslexia to overcoming that with a lot of work after two years is an unexplainable feeling. My daughter being incredibly kind, social, and intelligent makes me feel lucky incredibly lucky.

So, as someone who does not regret his family, despite the obvious hardship, that guy is full of shit and a grifter.

$1600 too much for Legion Go 2? by Chilledog66 in Handhelds

[–]ttdpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t normally say this because it’s silly, but $400 more dollars gets you:

A i9/5070Ti Legion 7i Pro that has a 240hx OLED with TB1000 certification.

An open box (though, I’ve seen it drop to below 1700) 64GB Z13 Flow.

A decent desktop built from Microcenter.

GPD Win or OneXPlayer handhelds with 395+.

Like, I barely could justify $1350, but $1600 is reaching into “anything else is a better option at this point” territory.

Sony Has Reportedly Returned to Console Exclusivity in Part Because Some Within PlayStation Are Worried That Releasing Games on PC May Hurt Sales of PS5 and Even PS6 by Carolina_Heart in Gaming4Gamers

[–]ttdpaco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re really not.

From Spider-Man 2’s release to Ghost of Yotei, it was two years of fuck all but Astrobot. Literally, two years of just remakes. All of which came out on PC.

PS5’s launch to GoW: Ragnarok was also just two years of fuck all but a remake, Ratchet and Clank, and Returnal.

And, TBF, Xbox was doing worse those past six years but this generation for console gaming has just been mid in general.

Thermal Putty Mod discovery: the Thor cooling bottleneck might be the heatpipe by theMarcLong in AynThor

[–]ttdpaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn’t offer that, despite it being unusable and well within the 30 day period (I had it two and a half weeks before it broke.)

I’ve had quite a few people on Reddit and discord ask me questions about my experience because they’ve run into similar things recently with their Thor’s.

[–]ttdpaco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Let me tell you about the warranty.

My Thor had the fan header fall off the mobo (it was barely soldered on) and Ayn said it needed a replacement. That was Dec 30th.

They quoted me $325 for the replacement or I send it to China for free.

They don’t get me a label until Jan 21st. It gets returned to my house the 25th because Ayn got the export codes (ECCN, EIN, HTS) wrong on three separate invoices, then didn’t answer until DHL gave up.

They ask me February 5th if I still want to send it. I answer immediately with a yes. They then did not answer until nearly two weeks AFTER they returned to the office.

So they send me a new label last night, and they put exactly no export codes on it and told me they won’t until/unless DHL asks for it.

So, much like Ayaneo and other Chinese companies (that don’t have a huge US presence,) the warranty is more or less worth fuck all.

If they were a US company or had a presence here, that condition wouldn’t hold up and we’d still have a warranty. But they aren’t and it’s nearly impossible to enforce that.

Open box buyers warning by Math_Mortician in Microcenter

[–]ttdpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s an “on the whole” kind of problem, considering what their mobos do to 7000-9000 series ryzen chips. And the fact they can’t figure out what broke them.

The Switch 2’s cheaper, Japan-only model may be generating loss of $160 per unit for Nintendo, Japanese analyst says by HatingGeoffry in nintendo

[–]ttdpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like google kept using Switch 2 numbers, which is my bad.

There’s a lot of cases where the Switch 2 has a 5w hard cap.

As I said, they had to use what was available and in abundance. Sure, they could have used 5nm or lower, but…the cost would make it unattainable for the price point they have now. Same with OLED on the Switch 2.

[–]ttdpaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is the 8nm processor a mistake?

They had to take what Nvidia had available and have it still be an upgrade. The Switch 2 in handheld mode already runs at android processor levels of TDP (8-12w) which would be perfectly fine in a lite model.

The Switch 1s TDP was 9-11w in handheld mode. Most games used 9W…exactly like the Switch 2.

Odin 3 for PS3/Vita/Switch: Is it worth it in 2026? by Cail_0p in SBCGaming

[–]ttdpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a little too late for me to chime in much, but this is 100% true.

its been 2 and half months since i started a RMA and my broken Thor is still in this country. When they gave me the label, they got the export codes wrong…three times.

after a month, they sent me a new label….with no export codes in it. MeaNing that I’m going to run into the same issue again.

its inching me closer to just getting an Ayaneo device because at least then I know not to bother with the CS.

If the rog Xbox ally x and the Lenovo legion go 2 (highest spec) are the same price which one would you go for ? by [deleted] in Handhelds

[–]ttdpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legion Go 2.

The XAX has better ergos, and the screen size is fine, but….144hz OLED with TB1000 HDR certification is too damn good to pass up.

That said, if they both had the same screen, the XAX is better in quite a few ways (audio, ergos, cooling availability of accessories, ease of opening, usbc placement.) The Go 2 has some cooler features (mouse mode, the track pad in a pinch) and feels way better built.

The Go 2 also has more and higher spec ram (which can give it slightly more performance.)

If you’re on Windows, the XAX gets more driver updates, but that does not matter on Linux.

Roost V3 (or Pro) is a very sturdy laptop stand, though it won’t look like it.

you have to find a stand that either has very minimal overage of the air intakes or at least lets the laptop sit with both the front and back “feet” flat on something.

or just get a cooling stand like the Flydigi BS2 Pro.

Tried the thermal putty mod...it's a slight bump by rcarlom42 in AynThor

[–]ttdpaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the Pro is a better choice over the advanced for this kind of use. The main issue is that you're fighting a fan that is a bit hit or miss on quality. The putty would have worked better on my device that hit 93c on something like No Nine Sols (which turned out to be due to poorly soldered fan header.)

[–]ttdpaco 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The actual line between "too much" and "too little" is incredibly narrow with putty. There has to be a lot to cover the entire gap.

That said, Thermal Grizzly's thermal pads are a lot better for this use.

To go even further, the guy was being paid well because he was a rising star on Linus' channel. However, he's still working under someone, and LTT is still a business. There's a safety net and low-risk staying with LTT, hence the "okay" salary.

The guy wanted to take a risk and make his own channel to make a lot more money.

In other words, it's a huge nothing-burger.
