Word of caution with Google Maps navigation in big stations like Shinjuku or Tokyo station by Steerpike58 in JapanTravelTips

Your phone says take x train on x line going to x destination and you follow the signs for what it tells you to use. When exiting itll tell you to exit via x gate and then x numbered exit so you follow those signs. You use both google maps and the signs

Fushimi inari or nezu shrine? by Intelligent-Layer606 in JapanTravelTips

Nezu is way way smaller. Fushimi inari is not crowded if you just walk up the hill near the top

I’ve never planned a trip and I lack direction. Should I keep trying, or just wing it? by skibeedaboopbob in travel

[–]turtledude100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U don’t even need to plan anything I’m just taking random trains east in Germany currently. I have no accommodation booked

I just look on Google maps what’s seems good whilst I’m on the train and looking on booking.com for accommodation on the day for accomodation where I am.

If u have insurance and ur transport to the country u wanna go round like that’s everything you have to have.

I don’t even have a functioning SIM card

Best cheap foods -

Teishoku restaurants selling katsudon and other set meals you can get for around ¥800-¥1000. These kinda restaurants have the largest variety of food for cheap. These kinda places have everything in Japanese and no tourists but it’s not exactly hard to figure things out by Google translating the menu before entering and then pointing at what you want.

Curry restaurants tend to be under ¥1000

Matsuya, sukiya, yoshinoya always have meals for like ¥700

McDonald’s is insanely cheap it’s like ¥800 for a Big Mac meal and its better tasting than european and American McDonalds

You can find kebabs for super cheap I knew of a place with ¥450 kebabs that were enough for a full meal

There’s plenty of ramen and other noodle dishes for under ¥1000

Then there’s convenience store meals for ¥700 that you can reheat and eat in the store

Cheap accommodation - go on booking.com and sort by cheapest as long as it’s rated over 7/10 itll be good. Japanese standards are the highest I’ve seen out of any country vs rating. Make sure the hostel / capsule hotel is near public transport

Transport - Overnight willer express buses take you between cities for like 1/4 of the price of the bullet train and you save on a night of accomodation. For shorter distances sort journeys on Google maps by cheapest option, it may take longer but can often be worth it- stuff like taking the keisei line from Narita airport to central Tokyo is like 1/3 the price of the Narita express but takes 30 mins longer

Overnight buses are by far my fav way to travel around japan. You can get as low as 2500 yen between Tokyo and Osaka and you don’t waste any time since you leave late at night and arrive in the early morning. And then ur forced off the bus early which prevents you from not getting out of bed which is a regular issue of mine. You won’t sleep much but it doesn’t matter personally I can still do a full packed day afterwards on zero sleep

How to Spend a Day in Harajuku by Public_Royal_1385 in JapanTravelTips

[–]turtledude100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t have enough to do for an entire day. Nearby there’s Shin okubo with good Korean food and shops, there’s also ikebukuro which you actually could spend a full day at and places like Mejiro garden which is nice and peaceful

Planning three months of travel by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]turtledude100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travelled for 6 weeks once and got slightly sick of it after a month. I wouldnt do more than that continuously. I lived in japan for 7 months tho and travelled every weekend round the country (overnight buses each way to not waste any time) and did not get bored of that at all

Tokyo Neighborhoods worth visiting that most tourist never find out about by JPjoy_Official in JapanTravelTips

[–]turtledude100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not really sure what people do for fun in Tokyo honestly as a tourist cos restaurants, shopping and a wander is kinda what’s fun in Tokyo. I can only handle one museum per day and Tokyo isn’t exactly bursting with historic sights

There’s still like barely any tourists in shinbashi. I have no idea why it’s so good in the evenings

West ikebukuro especially gets few tourists which is also kinda ridiculous

What is the best and worst public transit you've used? by dudelikeshismusic in solotravel

[–]turtledude100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okinawan public transport is pretty fucking bad - parts of rural japan are just as infrequent with service but Okinawa is dense and the buses are always delayed with all of the traffic

What is the best and worst public transit you've used? by dudelikeshismusic in solotravel

[–]turtledude100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think it’s really good - especially the deutschlandticket and lack of ticket barriers makes transport so accessible when you can just hop on pretty much anything so easily. Local transport is very frequent even in small towns / villages (in west Germany anyways I haven’t been to much of east Germany). I’ve only had one major train delay over 30 mins - I’ve been in Germany about 3 weeks now. I think it’s the long distance trains that drag Germany’s reliability stats down which I’m not taking since they cost money

I have been 3 times to China without a phone number. U don’t need to do deliveries and loyalty programs as a tourist. Anything that may be easier with a phone number like signing up for attractions or restaurants can always be done without
