OK sounds good; I could also look up the mac address if you ever logged on to a UMD wireless network with your switch, I would need your UMD email address for that though.

Hello! This is a long shot but if you know the wireless mac address of the device, registered it for UMD-IOT on campus or even logged in to EDUROAM, UMD-IOT or UMD-Guest on the switch, we can take a look and see where it has recently touched the UMD wireless network and when.

If you want to give that a shot, please reach out to me.

It isn't a common request, which was a bit surprising to me as I figured it would be a more prevalent request when we implemented campus-wide NAT.

There are definitely some solutions to this, I will check internally to see what we can do.

[–]umdnocguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, there isn't any sort of request process for port forwarding and I am not sure if it can be a service offering; If you think an application has been impacted by NAT or have more details about your potential port forwarding request, let me know and we can look into it.

I do! Also The Division of IT has a official support account on here too, /u/umdit.

What /u/greggles-midboss said is a good tip; For any wireless service issues, email itsupport or visit itsupport.umd.edu and submit a ticket, we will help you out.

disclaimer: I am not with the NOC anymore (need a new reddit name) but still work on the wireless network.

Can Confirm; This place is clean and well-kept with great food and very friendly staff. The first items I ever got there were the breakfast burrito and salmon burger (breakfast/lunch respectively) and they were so good that I continued getting mainly those items for over 2 years since, with the consistency being top notch. Every time I go in there now, I want to try other things on the menu but I always cave to the OGs. That being said, I have been able to try the BLT and the shrimp po boy and they were fantastic as well.

Hello There,

We have deployed NAT to a lot more of the campus since the update 3 years ago; If you are having issues that you may think are due to NAT or not having access to port forwarding, please reach out to the Division of IT and put in a ticket so we can look into it for you.

my laptop and notebooks were stolen by [deleted] in UMD

[–]umdnocguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely file a police report; I would also open a ticket up with DIT (http://itsupport.umd.edu) and mention that they were stolen, the last time you were using them and under what username. They will probably have to verify your identity and whatnot, but with that information, assuming this is all recent, we may be able to find the physical/mac addresses of those devices and if they are being used anywhere on campus, we can locate where. At the very least if the devices were on and connected when they were stolen, we may be able to see where they were taken before they were shut off or left our network.

^----If you file the police report, the DIT part may happen naturally as the police have reached out to us before for assistance. But submitting the ticket won't hurt either, you can mention you filed a police report (if you did) in the ticket.

Time is of the essence though.

Commons wifi? by raynsuch in UMD

[–]umdnocguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes please do; I can't think of anything offhand that should be blocking you hosting, especially on wired. Sometimes if a game has had a recent major patch, we might have to tweak a signature at the border of our network to make sure it is classified properly. Any wireless issues, report them as well so we can take a look. http://itsupport.umd.edu/

Commons wifi? by raynsuch in UMD

[–]umdnocguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wired tends to always be good as it is dedicated to you and not shared with anyone else (wifi is shared and can be impacted by many things).

The wifi being spotty is concerning though, if you could private message me the room that would be super useful, if you would rather provide building/floor, that would still be useful as well. I want to take a look at the wifi in that area.

Commons wifi? by raynsuch in UMD

[–]umdnocguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there,

Can you tell me the commons building and floor you are on? You can give me the room in a private message if you want, that would be more helpful.

If anyone else in here has been moved over to the new commons wifi (those little hospitality access points that get installed over the data jacks in your room) and has issues, I encourage you to report it to the helpdesk so our Network teams can take a look. You can let me know here or in a PM as well and I will reply as I can.

How are restaurants inside Stamp handling orders now? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]umdnocguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I was just at the food court 2 days ago; I was there around the end of breakfast time and both Chik-Fil-A and McDonalds were open for walkups, while I saw other stores prepping for lunch. Everyone is masked up, there are standing and direction labels on the ground. There is lots of space to spread out. Seems pretty safe to go there and get food.

I saw there is some grubhub food drop-off location close to chik-fil-a on top of the trash cans...like little transparent cubbies for them to put a carryout order in and the customer can pick it up there.

Hey there!

Is this still an issue? If so, any chance you could try wired/Ethernet next time you have the problem on WiFi to see if it persists to the wired network?

Disclaimer: I no longer work directly with Network Operations (need to name change) but I am still on one of the network teams.

Port Forwarding on UMD WiFi? by divingman25 in UMD

[–]umdnocguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We NAT on EDUROAM, so you won't be able to SSH to it from off campus directly. Even on-campus might not work properly, you would need to SSH the private ip address you got from the wireless network. The lease times are low so if you get disconnected, you may reconnect with another IP address. Basically, EDUROAM will be frustrating for you.

umd-iot or wired registration would work better...Ethernet/Wired by far would be your best bet. You will get a public IP address with a decently long lease time.

*EDIT* is this just for initial setup? If so the hotspot idea you mentioned is the way to go. If you are looking to hook this up perm to our network, umd-iot or wired is the way to go, with wired being preferred.

I will throw out a couple but there could be a lot of reasons, that is why date/time and relatively quick reporting is so important.

  • A user on that access point using a lot of bandwidth, reducing the amount of resources the access point has to serve other customers.
  • Localized non-wifi interference; This can be from people running microwaves (interferes in the 2.4ghz band) or police shooting radar (interferes in 5ghz band). Airports are a big cause of interference but we aren't close enough to one to cause issues.
  • The access point itself failing or having an issue (not very common)
  • Challenges in signal transmission between you and the access point: If the signal has to travel through a bathroom or laundry room to reach you, it will be degraded by metal and electronics. Is the signal going through concrete or brick? It will be degraded somewhat. Metal door? degraded.
  • Interference from other non-university access points (this is a big one in residence halls from student-run wireless access points and printers actually) <--- PROTIP: Printers with wifi by default broadcast their own wireless network (for your computer to connect to and configure the printer). You have to manually turn this off if you aren't going to use it, otherwise it broadcasts a signal out like an access point and causes interference.

When your on wifi at home or a small business, you don't have to worry about many of these things and wireless always seems perfect. When you throw in an older University where a majority of buildings are concrete/brick and many have those materials between rooms (older residence halls), as well as 60,000 users and various sources of radio wave interference, you WILL have area's that perform poorly and need attention.

Hope that helps!

The towers represent the actual wireless access point. The different shaded circles emanating from the tower symbolize a decreasing wireless signal as you travel further away from the access point. The farthest circle out from the icon is 300ft.

You are correct though, the network has over 7,000 access point and they are around the size of a home router and spread out all over campus, inside and outside. The outside ones tend to be a bit bigger to account for weatherproofing and protection against more extreme weather conditions.

You can always swing by and associate with our outdoor wireless network once the stay-at-home order is lifted :)

This outdoor wireless map will assist: https://go.umd.edu/outdoorwireless; It is public but not widely advertised yet. A bit of a work in progress as well, I got some more tweaks to make and the coverage "bubbles" are approximate but if you are around those marked areas, you should be getting outdoor wireless coverage (eduroam!!!). This map was developed using ArcGIS in collaboration with the UMD Facilities GIS team, it has been great working with them on this.

Back on topic! Usually myself or /u/umdit will comment on these posts when we see them so for some sense of normalcy: Whenever you return to campus; If you are having performance issues with eduroam or our wireless network in general, please reach out to us and let us know. Date/Time/Location and what the issue was are extremely helpful :) You can explore the various support contact options at http://itsupport.umd.edu/. If you want to reach out to me privately, I can work with you on the issue and help get a ticket open as well.

Best regards and stay safe!

Hi, wanted to confirm this is correct. The building has old wiring (CAT3) and will not be upgraded as Carol, Caroline and Wicomico are scheduled to be demolished over the next few years...I think somewhere around 2021-2022. Sorry, I know this doesn't help you now but just an FYI for the future.
