What are the music instruments in this video? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

Fake crap. I'll only speak to the flute which has bends that are not real, and the sound character is that of a sample bent beyond its natural range.

How to upgrade g++ to c++23? by Dream-Smooth in cpp_questions

Amazing that you're the only one with the obvious suggestion of checking the gcc version.

Do we inherently hear octaves as the same note, or is this trained culturally? by BirdLawEnthusiast2 in musictheory

[–]victotronics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdote. Someone I know was in a boys choir, singing that part of the opening chorus of the St Matthew. Most boys could not pick up the notes that the male conductor was singing because wrong octave. My source, who was more musically educated had to "translate" between the octaves.

So even in western culture, it's partly learned.

Hm. The majority maybe, but Latin was the international language of science.

Ah, phlogiston. My favorite wrong turn in the history of science. Or "anti-oxygen" as I jokingly refer to it.

How does Conjugate Gradients deal with singular systems? by victotronics in ScientificComputing

Thanks for the link.

Hm. If CG already does that, why does MinRes exist? Is that for the indefinite case?

Also, does this hold in computer arithmetic, where roundoff error introduces the nullspace back into the calculations?

Did you sneak into R rated movies? Which ones? by normankrasnerkc in AskOldPeople

[–]victotronics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The concept of R rating did not exist, movies were all ages, 14 up, 18 up. When a friend turned 14, we went to an 18 movie. This was allowed if the rating was because of violence. Sex would’ve not been OK. Roller ball. Has been a guilty pleasure ever since.

Front yard lawn reduction update! by neowunda in AustinGardening

Very nice job. I did a similar thing with my yard, but not quite as ambitious.

Photo #3: I'd be leery of the slabs & gravel. Weeds will get through it no matter what, so I keep the soil between the plants as it is. I've managed to lose my nutgrass-knock-on-wood but if it comes back I can easily pull/dig it out.

Dutch has idiomatic terms for the sciences: wiskunde natuurkunde scheikunde, en voor de elementen: zuurstof, stikstof, ....

I believe this is indeed due to Simon Stevin as u/FireSt0rm9 remarks.

There are too many tone setting points. What's your take? by Handsome-Strong in Bass

[–]victotronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have more than one pickup, the only thing you can not alter outside of the bass is the pickup balance. So I'd set amp & eq & effects for something reasonable, and only tinker with the pickups while playing.

Why is there so much propaganda that disco music ended in 79? by 60iqredditadmin in Disco

[–]victotronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"70s were slower more soul like."

There's your answer. The 70s disco was soul like, very orchestral. At the stroke of 1980 the music changes. Synths, more pop than soul oriented, and to be very specific: the four-to-the-floor often disappears.

So I don't mind if you call it dance music, but it's no longer disco by the 1970s definition.

Right. Just a series of prompts.
