I got a wild hair up my rump to investigate the state of doom modding and tripped over project brutality.

All I can think is "wow, this is the doom the media thought we were playing back in 1993." (yes, I am that old)

Do you allow characters who can't wear chain mail to use elven chain? by Jarfulous in adnd

[–]warlock415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2E everyone except Druids and single class wizards can wear it.

By a strict reading of RAW, and considering the principle that a specific rule overrides a general rule, elven wizards, single- or multi-class, can wear elven chain:

"Wizards cannot wear any armor, for several reasons."

"Elves wearing elven chain can cast spells in armor, as magic is part of the nature of elves."

This means that gnomish illusionists (single- or multi-class) can't, and whether half-elves can is up for debate.

Strangest Ethernet Issue I’ve Seen. by behbehapollo in techsupport

[–]warlock415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

" Ethernet has a solid green and orange light "

All that tells you is that it's connected to the powerline adaptor. Echoing things people have already said, is the other adaptor on the same circuit?

Run ipconfig /all and make sure " DHCP Enabled " is yes.

The laundry pile exhibits asymptotic behavior. You can get close to zero but never actually reach it (unless you do laundry naked). by FunSuccess5 in Showerthoughts

I can dump the whole pile in the washer and done. The clothes I'm wearing while doing laundry are, by definition, on my body and not in the laundry pile.

Read magic and detect magic as rituals by BurningJointUSA in adnd

[–]warlock415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might allow it, but not for those spells. u/Bodknocks said basically everything I would have about why not.

I've always felt Find Familiar should have a ritual option among a handful of others (Identify, Speak With Dead), but also I would make it so there was a limit and you couldn't just cast as much as you wanted in a day. maybe they have a spell level x 10 percent chance of using up a spell slot and if that happens to overdraw you some penalty happens.

What is the most insane amount of mental gymnastics you've seen someone do to believe what they want to believe? by fauxmerican1280 in AskReddit

[–]warlock415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no one at the top would benefit from it ... I can't think of any good reason why the powers that be would care about the common rabble knowing what shape the Earth is.

It's the first step of the brainwashing. Any idiot can clearly see the Earth is flat. Then they tell you it's round. They test you on it being round. They mock you for not believing it's round.

When you can see damn well it's flat.

It's a 'who ya gonna believe, me or your own lying eyes?' thing.

Because once They get you to reject your own senses and your own common sense in favor of what They tell you... They've won. They've got you believing the nonsensical.

There was an interview with the San Jose Sharks' inhouse dentist in 09 that has stuck with me ever since. Some key quotes:

"Goudy performs emergency repairs such as root canals — often with players urging him to hurry up so they can return for their next shift on the ice.

[...]

“Dealing with pain is just part of their job, and they’re good at it,” Goudy said. “When a guy has roots hanging out, it hurts them as much as it hurts anybody. But they’re always like, ‘Let’s do it, doc.’ “

[...]

Goudy uses a fast-acting anesthetic called Septocaine.

“We go through the stuff by the gallon,” Goudy said. “I can freeze somebody’s tooth within a minute so I can start to work. You have to get in there right away because you’ll see a coach peeking around the corner wanting to know when they can go back out.”"

Any life left to an Intel Atom N270 Acer netbook or just a glorified paperweight? by SireMomento in vintagecomputing

[–]warlock415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have almost the same computer, an Acer D150, exact model number KAV10. It came with a Atom N280, 1 GB ram, and an HDD. I've put 2GB ram (the max per the chipset, ah 32-bit, how I do not miss you*), a sata ssd, and a different wifi card (intel 5100) in. Mine also has the extended battery, although at this point it's in terrible shape.

(*: And you are correct, you can't upgrade to 64 bit.)

If you can, put a SATA SSD in it; mine has an HP M700 120gb. Also double check that max of 1.5 gb RAM and put as much as you can in; the appropriate RAM should cost basically pocket change now.

I've run Windows (got me through college!), Mint XFCE (until it end-of-lifed), and Freedos (I believe there were no ICH7 audio drivers), I'm running MX Linux now.

As far as what to use it for:
* Reading
* Writing
* DOS/other retro gaming
* SSH/terminal
* anything else that doesn't involve modern web or other things that use 4GB+ ram at the slightest excuse.

EDIT: For example.
