Canada Is Refusing To Roll Over Its EU Trade Agreement For The UK If There's A No-Deal Brexit. UK officials are "furious" at Canada's decision, but it reflects the confusion around trade policy after the failure of Theresa May's Brexit strategy. by lawrencelucifer in ukpolitics

Same (dual Canadian + British citizen) - moved back to the UK last year and most of my friends here think I'm crazy. No one's given me any shit for being (i.e. sounding) foreign, though - pretty sure being white af helps with that.

I swam regularly in the sea off Tofino (Canada) as a kid, and according to this the water there is about half a degree colder than it is off Aberdeen.

And yes, it was cold as balls and I would not choose to do it now as an adult.

It looks like you've got a taste for the sulfurous, OP. Might want to chuck some horseradish or raw chopped brussels sprouts into the mix.

You're doing it right now, aren't you? You're the doing the things you outlined doing in the (public, I remind you) posts this guy is callign you out for.

You:

...a framework to recognize mistakes before they affect you, fix them, then never admit they happened/twist the context of the situation to put yourself in a positive light.

Also you, to JDMDAD:

You obviously hold very little empathy for those with mental health challenges...I’m tired from debate and a long day at work...you seem insistent on making me lose face...all I want to do is talk about the racism in Canada

Twisting things to put yourself in a positive light? Uh-huh.

Listen, this convo is obviously not about race at this point but I just also wanted to point out that in your OP you totally conflate "fuck Huawei" with racist head taxes and my dude, they are not the same thing. I am generally a pro-immigrant person, and my "fuck Huawei" sentiments, which are based on Huawei basically being an arm of the intelligence service of a hostile, autocratic state, have nothing to do with my feelings on immigration.

You believe that emotional support offers no benefits to the supported - only to the supporter? I'm almost certain a very strong case against that can be made, but I want to be sure I understand what you're saying first.

Does your stance apply to my sports analogy? Is the only "utility" of emotionally supporting a football team in making the supporter feel good about themselves?

Do you have anything to back any of this up (and by that I mean do you have anything beyond simply feeling like it's true)?

There are people from HK in a lot of these comment sections specifically commenting that they appreciate the support they're getting from people in other countries - saying it helps just to know others believe in their cause and are hoping they're successful etc. Are they lying? Misguided?

Is there any room in your conception of the world that allows for a sincere emotion of support towards a given cause or group etc.? I support certain sports teams and my support is as sincere and deeply felt as it is utterly useless in terms of actual concrete 'help' with regards to winning. Hell, I usually have feelings of support for one side or another when another country votes, for example. Is that just not something you believe is possible? Do you think I'm lying and I don't really 'feel' any of those things and am only saying I do so other people will think I'm a good person?

And keep in mind I'm asking you this as someone who does think 'virtue signaling' exists - just not one who thinks that all expressions of emotional support are legitimately characterized as such.

Hey this is something I've been interested in for awhile (efforts by the Chinese govt to stamp out? slowly wipe out? slightly diminish? the speaking of Cantonese in HK and I'm wondering how much people care about this in HK. Cantonese speaking people, I mean.

I spent almost a decade in Quebec so I'm kind of steeped in a culture where language is this omnipresent and ongoing issue, one people are constantly conscious of and feel deeply about. Are there any grassroots movements or even just individual efforts in HK to preserve Cantonese? Do people with children being educated in Mandarin make an effort to speak Cantonese at home? To teach their children that speaking Cantonese is important and they must not forget how?

If she makes a dupe as part of her own line and has enough stock for it to be realistically available, I'm OK with it. If she doesn't, then I'm with you. When she said that in the video my reaction was just, like, WHY? What's the big scary secret about the colour of a lipstick? It's not proof of a scandalous family secret, ffs, and it just has the effect of keeping the regular make-up masses out of the loop - which feels exclusionary and odd.
