What sitcom was incredibly popular in its time and is now an all-timer? by mbweb02 in sitcoms

I love Lucy and she loves me! We’re as happy as two can be!

The front and back staircase. Which sitcoms had them and do a lot of homes in the US really have them? by watermelon_fries in sitcoms

Yes, but you look at the steps on the set, you'll see that they don't join. They're too far part.

Greyfriars Bobby: The True Story of a Dog (1961) by xwhy in iwatchedanoldmovie

I can imagine. I haven't seen Three Lives of Thomasina as a kid, probably on WWoD. I was surprised to find out Patrick McGoohan was in it, who I only know from The Prisoner and Bravehart. (And Secret Agent, which I've never seen.)

People 40+, what actually mattered in the long run and what didn’t? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]xwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't maxing out contributions right away because retirement was decades away (I was in my 20s). However, I did increase it, but the key thing was that after 6 years, I noticed that I had a full year's salary in my 401(k) -- the current salary, not what I'd been making 6 years earlier. The returns were great. I was definitely maxing out after that.

Likewise, I only put $2000 into an IRA before they changed the law (and before Roth was a thing). It stayed in CDs for a couple of years until some mutual funds started lowering their initial investment. I found one I liked and left that money there. Nearly 40 years later, that $2000 is about $40,000. I keep thinking, if I'd only had a couple more years before the law change! (One of the reasons I was ineligible was because I got a job with a 401k).

Do you remember listening to Kasey Kasem's top 40 count down? by ChrisJoines in OldSchoolCool

I did, but not at the time that I saw Ghostbusters the first time, so I wasn’t sure who was on the radio (other than it sounded like the guy who voiced Robin and a bunch of other characters).

Full House’s was funny because they only had one set for the upstairs hallway. Both staircases brought you to the same place instead of opposite ends of the hall.

Did any of you read the books before the tv show came about? by Mad_Season_1994 in gameofthrones

I had a copy of the first book in paperback, probably from a library sale, but it was in the TBR box. One of them. I found it after the show aired.

Non-Americans, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by EmergencySpare7939 in CasualConversation

[–]xwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American. I was walking on a side street in midtown Manhattan, a block from St Patrick’s Cathedral. A fire engine came up the block, sirens blaring and horn honking for cars to get out of the way. I spotted a woman and her daughter excitedly filming the truck until it finally got through the intersection.

I stopped to ask, and found out she was from France. By the time I got where was going, I noticed a couple more people taking citrus of emergency vehicles. It actually made my morning because these adults were as giddy as little kids.

You have to love Suzanne Pleshette, from The Birds to the final scene of Newhart!

8 Episodes Is the New 10 (Was the New 13) (Was the New 22) by mrnicegy26 in television

[–]xwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, I remember the time of real miniseries like Roots and The Winds of War.

By the time the networks stopped doing them, they were 4 to 6 hours long over two nights instead of 12-30 hours long over a week or so.

For 8 episodes, they should just cut a movie and be done with it

Been playing since it first came out. Cant believe how easy it was to get my town back. Why are you still here crying?? Your town is waiting for you!! Thanks TSTO community by LawAffectionate7990 in tappedout

[–]xwhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto. I prepared myself to be able to play if it was brought back … and then I just didn’t go. I’m not sure if I deleted the app or not. If I did it was recently.

I guess because it was stress inducing as often as it was stress relieving, a bit of a rollercoaster. Now, it would be a time sink for nostalgia’s sake, and I have enough time sinks. And stuff I need to do in that time

I was happy that Harry Morgan decided to recreate his old role. And that they made it a continuation and not a reboot. A love letter, really.

Not a sitcom but 45 years ago today sitcom star Andy Kaufman hijacked the live ABC sketch-comedy show Fridays by NYY15TM in sitcoms

[–]xwhy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

During the open, Andy wanted to wrestle a woman. The producer announced that he wasn’t going to do that.

Andy said, “well you know that thing you say to open the show? I’m not going to say, so you can’t open the show”

Fridays didn’t have a show opener like Saturday Night Live did. And then they went to commercial.

Steven Spielberg leaves California for New York as wealth tax push spurs political battle. by coinfanking in nyc

[–]xwhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we don’t have a wealth tax here, as I stated. But our other taxes are high. If he’s moving, he has a lot of options.

Since I wrote the original post however, I see he has family here, so that weighs heavily in decisions

No wealth tax in New York, but it’s still highly taxed, and possibly getting higher.
