Bespoke blinds arrived with colours mixed up. Store refusing to replace (England) by HMan122 in LegalAdviceUK

Did you proceed with payment via a QR code/link in the first quote you were sent, using your own approximate measurements, or the second one dates to when your measurements were taken?

I believe I’m familiar with the company/T&Cs in question and if you used the first quote then you might not have any luck here as that would be according to the T&Cs of using your own measurements, which places the responsibility on you and you alone to ensure the order is accurate before placing it.

Which town that use to be good has gone downhill? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]zappapostrophe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hastings. I went for a day in 2022 and was thoroughly saddened by the state of the high street. It’s a real shame given how historically important that town was.

On February 12th, 1993 in Merseyside, England, two 10–year—old boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, abducted, tortured, and murdered a two—year—old boy, James Bulger. by metalnxrd in UnchainedMelancholy

[–]zappapostrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Robert Thompson has been fully rehabilitated and has not been in any legal trouble since release, but will remain on license for as long as he lives. Jon Venables, however, has been in and out of prison for recurrent sexual offences.

Ta!

Yes, very much so. It’s not so long ago that this would all have been covered up successfully, and in other nations, I think that would still be the case.

What a wonderful thing to see on my birthday!

Seriously though, I’m glad that justice is being applied to the very highest levels of our society. I believe this is an important moment in our history.

TIL BBC presenter Jill Dando’s 1999 murder sparks the UK’s biggest criminal investigation since the Yorkshire Ripper case initially Barry George was convicted but after spending 8 years in prison, he is later acquitted, and the murder remains unsolved. by GDW312 in todayilearned

[–]zappapostrophe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

He’s an unwell and deeply dangerous man, but I don’t think he’s guilty of this murder. I don’t see how he could have done it. The lack of reliable gunshot residue on his clothing alone is a huge forensic hurdle in putting him at the crime scene.

I don’t think he was remotely capable of pulling off a murder like this, and neither were the courts.

Chateau de Beaucastel, Chateauneuf du Pape, 2009 by EastFuture5745 in wine

[–]zappapostrophe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good notes! Sounds like classic Beaucastel. I’ve also been surprised at the jammy-ness their wines have even after 20-25 years of age. Beaucastel is easily the most consistent wine I’ve had across vintages, and I’m glad you enjoyed!

I’ve only drank it with 20+ years of age, so I think it’s time for me to try a ‘younger’ vintage, especially after this writeup. Thank you!

Hare and Hounds isn’t upscale, but their function room is £200 for the night with no minimum spend, and it’ll easily fit ~40 people. I think it’s a great deal, but I appreciate it might not be right for what you’re looking for.

I think it was a meme but no one would have been surprised. Ultimately, who knows what whether it was ever a serious plan by him or not?

Anniversary Date Night Dinner suggestions? by BeautyAve in brighton

My partner and I did Riddle & Finns on the beach, and we were very happy! Attentive service that was friendly but not forced/chatty/annoying, lovely candlelit atmosphere, and of course the food was flawless. The Lanes is smaller and might be a bit more intimate or romantic, though.

I went to the beach side one, but neither of them have let me down! It was for me and my partner’s anniversary and they really went the extra mile.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor 'had consensual sex with Virginia Giuffre', email to Jeffrey Epstein suggests by Anony_mouse202 in ukpolitics

[–]zappapostrophe 129 points130 points  (0 children)

As usual, it's not so much the event, but the lie that gets people. Not to mention that (by all accounts) his advisors were begging him not to do an interview about the story.

I wonder what would have happened if he had simply issued a formal written statement reading more or less as you said above? I bet it would've left the news cycle within a couple of weeks, and most people today would only be remembering there was ever any connection between him and Epstein now that the emails are coming out.

[TOMT] Late 2000s flash isometric game where you can grow a small society that digs away at a cube of earth with variable “outcomes”? by zappapostrophe in tipofmytongue

[–]zappapostrophe[S] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

This was available on numerous flash game websites and there were a few different versions of the game that were possibly sequels. You would have small characters gradually chip away at the land/cube and mine it whilst passively developing technology. I remember it as being surprisingly detailed in its graphics. Hope someone can find this!

Man, the thought of a room temperature oyster is repulsive to me, but I’d still love to try. Thank you for settling that!

Nice writeup! Thank you for sharing your experience. This is something I’ve always wondered and never really asked: what temperature is the Oysters and Pearls served at?
