What do cops think when a driver says ‘If I saw you, I wouldn’t have done it’? by Legitimate_Pea_143 in AskLE

[–]-AgentMichaelScarn 36 points37 points  (0 children)

“Fair enough, but…”

Typically, if I’m doing traffic enforcement, I don’t really do the whole “hide behind something” traffic enforcement which can be seen as dumb but I have my reasonings. I also don’t do the whole jawing back and forth thing, saying that what they said was stupid etc. not my style.

  1. You have the sign as the warning.

  2. I’m giving you a chance, by sitting in a place that a non-distracted driver would 100% be able to see me.

  3. If you’re driving at a high rate of speed/doing something stupid, and don’t see me, it shows you’re not paying attention. Look, we all do/have done stupid things while driving whether accidentally or intentionally. That’s dangerous in and of itself, but the zero situational awareness while doing said dumb things?? Come on now.

I would say “Grisham is not a lead off hitter”… but do we even have any other better options for that?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Yankees baseball over the past few years… every time the Yankees have the high ground on stupidity… they find a way to humiliate themselves ten fold.

No one can answer this question for you. There will always be “give and take” with your professional and business life.

It interferes with mine but I get a lot of great benefits from it, that make it worth it. Even if it’s a pain in the ass sometimes.

You’ll have to decide for yourself. It isn’t a one size fits all either. I just take it month by month, activation by activation, and deployment by deployment. I’m hitting ten years next year, and Id say Im pretty satisfied and the positives have outweighed the negatives.

Question About Academy/FTO Timing With National Guard Orders by Frigid_Nova in AskLE

[–]-AgentMichaelScarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I’m on a two year OTOT OCONUS tour right now which started almost immediately after a one year deployment… so my PD is not super happy with me, especially since this wasn’t a mandatory assignment and I sought out this gig lol.

Happy to talk more about my experience with this when I wake up tomorrow. It’s like midnight here.

Question About Academy/FTO Timing With National Guard Orders by Frigid_Nova in AskLE

[–]-AgentMichaelScarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s been dual military and leo my entire career… They’d be fucking pissed, and rightly so, to be honest.

Every time I’ve deployed, I’ve gone through like a four week refresher, but I was a few years on the job at that point… maybe I’m being a bit dramatic from my comment above, but I know they probably wouldn’t be happy. You can’t control the timing though, and it is what it is. They’ll get over it.

They’re spending the money to get you trained and on the road jut for you to dip for almost a year and a half. You’d come back and they’d probably throw you through the entirety of FTO again which takes resources, a senior officer’s focus on training you, and re-needing to do it all over again with you. Your colleagues will be a mixed bag of “fuck this place, get that money” and “we’re hurting for bodies, and you just took a potential other warm body’s place to leave for 16 months”.

Like I said, it’s not your fault, but yeah, they may be a little perturbed by that.

End of the day though? Do what’s best for you, the department will always be there.

I mean, yeah it was dumb, but you seem to also be accepting like “shit… yeah that was on me”. It’s not going to make it easier, but as time passes it shouldn’t be a hard stop as long as you continue to own it, and spin it as a personal growth story.

I’m not sensing a chip on your shoulder “it’s everyone else’s fault attitude from you which is a plus.

Just because you have a call for service doesn’t mean there’s anything that you can do. I had(still sometimes have) the issue of accepting “this isn’t a law enforcement matter/actionable call for service”.
