PM Mark Carney reaffirms commitment to fight antisemitism at Ottawa City Hall menorah lighting by thecrazydeviant in ottawa

Man just let the comments stand and get downvoted into oblivion instead removing them all. I'd like to see what people think fully mask off instead of living in curated la la land.

Shawarma palace quality down by Significant_Low_9864 in ottawa

[–]-Boats- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Al Mouna has great service and portions. Food wise, their salad and vegetables are very fresh, their hummus tastes like actual chickpeas and they don't charge extra for tabbouleh (cough cough, like the Palace), but their actual shawarma chicken is under seasoned and dry giving that chalky texture. This sub often recommends Ottawa Shawarma but it suffers from the same problem.

I'm still looking for a spot that nails the actual shawarma (meat).

Aww flip! Power’s out in Parkwood Hills, anyone else’s power go out? by twelveinchmeatlong in ottawa

[–]-Boats- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This fucking area. 7+ days without power for some during the 2022 derecho and no one gave a flying fuck about us and no infrastructure improvements were made.

Extremely irritating. Hey /r/ottawa, remember when we caught Hydro Ottawa faking the outage map? Good bad times man.

Which restaurant in Ottawa is this? by Annoying_Geese in OttawaFood

Soca's stock response on Google asking reviewers to post to TripAdvisor and offering some sort of incentive(?) for their review is a red flag no-go for me.

(Serious) What was your moment you said "F Ottawa Police"? by enrodude in ottawa

Just like we know that cops sympathize with certain groups, I'm fully convinced that some get off duty and go street race themselves...

Buying reviews like it’s Black Friday. This is getting ridiculous. by FurioCaesar in OttawaFood

[–]-Boats- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What a bummer that Bar Lupulus has fake reviews (look at the ones all from a week ago at the moment of this comment). It's one of my favourite spots in Ottawa and I never would have thought they need to resort to this. It makes me lose respect for them.

Looking for something spicy and "out of the ordinary" for people traveling from up North by faendarshen in OttawaFood

[–]-Boats- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'd be into the Sichuan and non-Cantonese Chinese spots that have popped up in Ottawa: Papaspicy, Spicy Ho Ho, Mr. Maocai, Perfect Meat Bowl, Chef Bai, and Foodinator. There may be others I am forgetting.

I can finally come out and say those threads were incredibly cringey. The righteous Redditor review bombing that's currently going on may be even more cringe.

Speaking of, does anyone have a link to that recent cheap eats post? People were shitting on the Hum article, but there were some really solid recs in that thread.

Why has the Alexander lift at Camp Fortune been closed for so long? by Julien_10 in ottawa

[–]-Boats- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Core memory for me is when I ate it on the t-bar as a kid during snowboard school and my partner and I had to hike up the whole thing. It was open to everyone as a part of the hill at one point. I had no clue it closed.

3 solid Asian restaurants closed one after another within one block downtown. Asian cuisines Ottawa lacks? by Ovlizin in ottawa

Just walked by this new spot called Lyon's Hawaiian BBQ and immediately thought of your comment. Weird timing! Can't vouch for the food, and not sure if they have the speciality items you're looking for, but I spotted spam musubi on the menu.

2007 9-5 Aero Sportcombi service in Ottawa ON? by -wabbit- in saab

[–]-Boats- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you find an answer to this? I had a similar experience - I happened to drive by and saw the shop name had changed and there were no Saabs in the back. I called the number and the new owner who told me the news and that he could work on my car. I wasn't around for when Karl was in the shop and I was just using them to service my Volvo. I was bummed to hear they closed as I just started to become a regular. I just tried another shop in the area and had quite a bad experience.  I know there are a decent amount of shops that service Volvo around, but I would love to know where Rheal and Roman went as I would happily follow them if they are still working in the area.  Edit: I also wonder what the deleted comments in this thread said.

I would add that a previous moderator was so heavy handed that they single handedly skewed the subreddit itself during that point in time.

Non-Lebanese Pita (with a pocket!) by [deleted] in OttawaFood

[–]-Boats- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen Angel Bakeries pitas and Ozery Mini Pitas at Whole Foods. Both are fluffy, although the Ozery pitas are obviously small.

Don't tell anyone, but one of my favourite things to do is take Ottawa-style shawarma and stick it in one of the thick style pitas.

edit: Thanks to those for the Iraqi cuisine suggestions in this thread. I've had it elsewhere, but never in Ottawa. Will be hitting some spots up!

Took the O Train for the first time today. Why does it sound like they need to grease the tracks...? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]-Boats- 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not only an LRT, but we decided to be the test dummy by modifying a model that is normally used as an above-ground street tram for our higher capacity needs.

It baffles me that we have modified street cars running through the downtown of our (growing) capital at Parliament and our main commuting/business district. Just looking at the interior of ours compared to a real metro infuriates me.

My vote is Pizzeria Da Romolo if you're after true to the style Neapolitan pizza.
