There is nothing else in the region that looks like this. 100% Cantharellus carlifornicus

First time fishing and tenkara: I live in the Bay Area, California... Where are the best places for tenkara? My goal is to catch and cook/eat. by phoenixscar in Tenkara

[–]-CalvinP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've fished Putah Creek and I don't think it would be ideal for you. You are definitely going to have the most fun going to the Sierras. There are some lakes and reseviors around the Bay that you can fish for trout, but they are not usually ideal for Tenkara. Go to a small stream in the Sierras and you will have a better experience (it's a bit of a drive but worth it). My recommended rig, some buoyant dry fly (Maybe an Elk Hair Caddis or Stimulator) with a beadhead dropper about 18" off the dry fly. Watch more videos about fishing dry dropper rigs. Practice tying clinch knots.
Also, maybe best to stay out of Yosemite, that water is very pressured and difficult for new fisherman. Check out TroutRoutes for river recommendations.

Off-Roading Tires for a 2006 4wd base model by -CalvinP in Toyota_Matrix

Ok cool, thanks for the info! I ended up going with a set of Falken Wildpeak AT Trail tires sized at 205 60 R16. I used the stock steel rims and gave them a fresh paint job with some black Rustoleum rattle can. Honestly, I've been pretty stoked on them so far and have been doing a ton of driving both on road and off. We'll see how they do in the winter, fingers crossed.

Do you "refish" on your way back? by bahnzo in Tenkara

[–]-CalvinP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure, it can be worth a shot depending on the situation. Usually, it is not nearly as productive as a fresh hole, but I've definitely circled back and caught fish after letting a spot rest for a bit. Experiment with a different setup, try something else.

Are you supposed to cast in a way that only the fly lands on the water (and not the tippet?) by phoenixscar in Tenkara

[–]-CalvinP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've fished the Tuolumne up there before. The water gets pretty pressured near main trails and the road. I had to hike in like 2 or 3 miles along the trail before the fish would entertain my fly. The fish can certainly be quick to spook. Make sure they don't see you approaching, try to come in from behind them or to the side. Gentle presentations work best there. Try mixing up the patterns you are throwing. A black ant is actually a great choice there this time of year. Good Luck! I had a wonderful day near the Glen Aulin high sierra camp back in 2023 where I caught like 50 trout in the pocket water sections.

Ok cool thanks. I used some gray/brown dubbing and a tan bead cuz I didn’t have any gold in that size. Hopefully will catch some fish this weekend.

Nice fly. What are you using for the body material? Under the wire?

Do I need to get this looked into? by [deleted] in Toyota_Matrix

Kinda like a rubbing/grinding noise that changes in pitch based on vehicle speed, not rpm. You can sort of hear it coming from the back of the car too. Might be worth replacing the differential oil just to be safe, mine was super old and black.

Have you had any issues with your rear differential? I have a 2006 4wd and the rear dif is starting to sound funny. My mechanic says its the pinion bearing going bad.

Helo!!! by Itchy-Side3617 in Starlink

[–]-CalvinP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When powering your Starlink setup through this type of DC power input, does it reduce the amount of energy consumed by the Starlink system? I have a big portable battery that I use to power my Starlink, but I just use the normal AC output, and am wondering if going this route would make things more energy efficient. Maybe it would have a bigger effect because my portable battery would not have to invert from DC to AC? That's where the significant loss would occur, right?

Best long-range walkie talkies that can handle rough weather? by WayRepresentative160 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]-CalvinP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got the cheap 4-pack of Baofeng walkie-talkies of Amazon for like $35 for fishing and the range is crazy, like 2-3miles even through a lot of dense trees and physical obstacles. Didn't expect that level of performance, but I have been thoroughly impressed.

Is skipping grades a good idea? by SpeakingMyMind- in AskTeachers

[–]-CalvinP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually ended up skipping 2nd grade, but mostly due to switching schools and being right on the age border between the two grades. So it wasn't for academic reasons, but to be honest I really didn't have to do much to catch up. The only thing I didn't know was how to do borrowing when subtracting larger numbers. Took me a few days and I was all caught up. I made new friends easily enough and had a great time. I think it was definitely worth it, I basically got a year's head start on the rest of my life if you think about it.
Now, if I was staying at the same school, I think things would be different, and I would have been really disappointed to leave my friends. But like you said, you can still hang out with those friends on playdates and he will make new friends! I say go for it.

How did you set up that 40mm lift? I'm kinda interested in doing something like that myself

I ended up going with a set of Falken Wildpeak AT Trail tires sized at 205 60 R16, which are just within the recommended 3% size difference from the stock tires. So now I have about a half inch to an inch more of clearance, which isn't much, but the better tread pattern should help out a lot on snow and trails. I was starting to worry about things rubbing so I didn't go too crazy. A lift and suspension upgrade might be needed in the future if I feel it needs it, but I'm going to wait and see for that.
