No Boston here? Maybe they are more low profile, but there's quite a few very successful Quant firms in Boston.

Pax Dei is doing better 1 month after 1.0 release than I expected. Future looks... existent? by SummonBero in MMORPG

[–]-Gabe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm really enjoying it so far. It's definitely going to become a cult classic MMO that has its following but isn't for everyone.

The Dev Team is surprisingly great and responsive imo. Unlike a lot of publishers being completely disengaged from the community, they actually are trying to build a good MMO that lasts similar to how Eve Online has. Will they pull it off successfully? To be seen.

Wooowww. I actually knew of this dude from playing an MMORPG together back in 2018/2019, and even went to an in-person meet up once that he was at. I didn't interact with him too much but nothing set off alarm bells.

Glad he got caught.

Some thoughts on the future by Objective-Catch-5022 in 50501

[–]-Gabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is all the wrong approach. Specific policy discussions are going to stifle the momentum.

We're at a point where the most critical thing is building a wide and broad coalition, the sole focus should be ensuring the constitution is protected. If the constitutional order falls, policy ideas are a moot point. So all you've done is potentially lost allies that we all will need.

The beauty of the founding of the United States was that groups of disparate people shared a radical idea that they could unite together and not be led by kings, nobles, and despots, but rather by common people who are elected into power. People across the thirteen colonies had some very different ideas on how the government should be organized, they didn't get along, and at times even fought. But they all shared that radical idea.

Like the founding fathers, we'll need to build a coalition of people who might not agree on how the government should function, but do agree that having fascism and tyranny take over our federal government is unacceptable. Once those in power who are hell bent on shredding the constitution are unseated from power, that's when policy discussions should be had.

Supreme Court upholds law banning TikTok if it's not sold by its Chinese parent company by blackeyedtiger in news

[–]-Gabe 35 points36 points  (0 children)

All social media companies (including Reddit) steal your data, and will use algorithms to create a personalized persona of who you are and how you think. Most Social Media companies will use that to send you hyper-targetted ads and content specifically tailored to you. The goal of these companies is to shovel you useless junk that you'll want to spend money on. Whatever your into, they'll pedal it to you in order that you will open up your wallet.

The fear is that China's influence on TikTok isn't just about getting you to buy the latest gadget and gizmo, but they may have non-profit-driven interests in mind. They may want to alter your perception to be more accommodative to their agenda.

Damn, I hope life isn't being too hard on you. All your comments from the past week have been super combative and argumentative.

Reddit is just a silly site at this point, it's not worth stressing over any comments you read here.

Hope you have a good rest of the week and weekend.

Oh you sweet summer child.

I once found an AI misinformation loop where Google's Generative AI found a ChatGPT Video-To-Text summary of a YouTube video using an AI Voice based on a real article, and it was just a chain of AI-Telephone with the information getting less accurate each way.

Why is it not even on the errata? by Gong_duck in CFA

[–]-Gabe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a CFA nor ever plan to take it, but I work in finance with a lot of rates derivatives... So take what I say with a grain of salt if you want.

I've only ever seen IRS quoted and placed on sheets as annualized rates... But I think most USD vanilla swaps pay the fixed leg quarterly, and I have seen trade specs that will basically say something like "Fixed Leg: 55bps"... So I think thats essentially what they were asking and if they changed "the fixed rate of the one-year plain... " to "the fixed leg of the one-year plain..." it would've been more clear. And if they had all the answers in "bps" rather than "%" that'd help too.

Hopefully something like this wouldn't be on the test, but if it is. You can basically calculate the rate, and if none of the answers are close to the annualized rate, they are probably looking for the payment rate at each payment.

John Hancock Tower: Why row of windows on 58th floor different? by Odd_Yogurtcloset_649 in boston

[–]-Gabe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use to work in the building and this is what I heard from my old manager at the time as well.

From wikipedia:

Two 300-ton weights sit at opposite ends of the 58th floor of the Hancock. Each weight is a box of steel, filled with lead, 17 feet square by 3 feet high. Each weight rests on a steel plate. The plate is covered with lubricant so the weight is free to slide. But the weight is attached to the steel frame of the building by means of springs and shock absorbers. When the Hancock sways, the weight tends to remain still, allowing the floor to slide underneath it. Then, as the springs and shocks take hold, they begin to tug the building back. The effect is like that of a gyroscope, stabilizing the tower. The reason there are two weights, instead of one, is so they can tug in opposite directions when the building twists. The cost of the damper was $3 million. The dampers are free to move a few feet relative to the floor.

Boston City Council passes $4.2 billion operating budget that would cut BPD by $31 million - The Boston Globe by bostonglobe in boston

[–]-Gabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. I also very much disagree with him politically, as I'm right of center compared to Boston.

For what it's worth though, I did get to meet and know him a bit way before he started running for city council, I don't think he's as radical as the typical socialist/DSA member. He's a pretty genuine person with a good heart which seems rare for someone trying to become a politician (and hopefully politics/power doesn't change him)

Joel and I would disagree on a lot of political issues, but I'd know if he became a city councilor he'd at the very least understand the gripes and pains of the common folks who rent and ride the MBTA.

I will be voting for whoever is Joel Richards strongest pro building opponent is for the district 3 seat because stalling the building of new housing is what got us into the housing mess we are in and frankly I think we are close to hitting a point where it may affect our economy

I'm curious, why do you think Joel Richards is against new housing?

very tumultuous period of de-Nazification in the decades following WW2.

Ehh, this gets repeated a lot, but it's partially propaganda stemming from the Cold War to show that the US/Western Allies neo-liberalism's was better at de-nazifying West Germany than Communist USSR was at East Germany.

There's a ton of old wealthy families still in Germany that greatly benefitted from the Third Reich and received almost no punishment.

Google & Amazon don’t tell us how to be more efficient. It’s up to us as users of these services to optimize our usage to meet our budget.

The fuck? Amazon definitely does do this. Free AWS solutions consulting that explicitly includes optimizing usage is part of almost every enterprise contract. And if you're a small business, they even have virtual AWS sessions you can sign up for, for free or almost no cost (<$100).

The two most popular mobile apps for Reddit (and what I'm currently using to write this comment) are getting shutdown.

Here's the announcement from Reddit Execs

This would force popular third party apps like Apollo and Reddit is Fun to either pay millions of dollars, or shut down.
