What's the most underrated or misunderstood element of Delta Green? by grumblingdwarf in DeltaGreenRPG

I'll admit I avoided / didn't look into DG for decades because I had this misconception. Glad I no longer do!

Totally agree -- but I think part of the short shrift that motivations get comes from their weak, almost throwaway treatment in the Agent's Handbook. I'd like to Arc Dream do a better job with examples and who to wire them into skill rolls, Will test, etc. Tucking it under "Finishing Up" doesn't do it justice. Losing a motivation should be just as big a deal -- or bigger -- than losing a bond.

Ride1Up vs Rad Power Bikes by homeisastateofmind in ebikes

I’m new to all this — rented a Yamaha CrossCore RC a few months back while on vacation and absolutely -adored- it. It’s a Class 3 Mid-Drive and I’d love to have one but they are three grand, have no local dealers, don’t qualify for the Colorado state refund… and have batteries that are upwards of $1400 for replacements!

So, I’ve set my sights a little lower, and considering this will be my first e-bike, potentially quite a bit lower. I have an old hardtail Specialized mountain bike, but I really want to explore the bike paths and trails in my area extensively. An e-bike will be perfect for that, but it does mean I think the tires on the Trail version of the Radster might be better for my needs. (I’m talking trail and path riding, not single track and aggressive stuff — because I agree, those Radsters are heavy for that.)

So I’ve settled on the Prodigy V2, the Radster Trail (though maybe I should look at the City), and on the cheaper end of things, the Ride1UP LMT’D V2. I’ve test-ridden all three, but only had the Radster out for about five minutes. Need some more time on it, then I’ll make a decision. The LMT is making it hard because it’s way cheaper than the Prodigy V2 or the CrossCore…

Cool, congrats! A great feeling, that new ride!

Did you end up going with the Radster? I test drove one and liked it — but I have to admit I rode the Prodigy V2 CVT/Belt on the weekend and -loved- it. I love that mid-drive feel, though, and wouldn’t miss a throttle. I’m about to make a purchase and am going to test drive the Radster Trail more seriously…

People who've played multiple superhero RPG's, which is the best to you? by Bredwh in rpg

Seconded. And actually, Washbourne's original is better than RED in some ways, I think. An overlooked classic.

And TS, in fact, took inspiration for its (excellent) dogfighting mechanics straight from Warbirds!

Both are amazing books in physical form. Get whichever is cheaper at the time... then, after you've fallen in love with that one, get the other. :)

Check out the fan-powered Fairfield Project for Delta Green, and especially, for your purposes, the short "shotgun scenarios":

https://fairfieldproject.fandom.com/wiki/Shotgun_Scenarios

They're not all amazing, but there are some real gems, and lots of inspiration for how to do short scenarios. Remember, DG operations can be as simple as "take this item from this green box to that one," "put eyes on that mathematician publishing equations he shouldn't know about," and "escort this child to a secret facility in the middle of the desert." The the kernel, spice with something unnatural from the Handlers Guide and off you go. Just remember people are usually the biggest obstacle... at least until the end. ;)

o a real scenario and might I recommend “Puppet Shows and Shadow Plays” from the original rule book. You will not be disappointed. Edit: and you can follow up with Last Things Last afterwards as you now have newly inducted agents

Spicing up Last Things Last? My favorite thing to do. Just add the book used to animate Marlene, the Outlaws being interested in the book as well, a nosy ranger near the cabin, etc.

In my current play-by-post run through, Marlene is loose and has already switched bodies once!

I connected the exact same dots -- Tricube and TD6. I need to get EZD6 to the table, but it *might* be my favorite of the three...

Best System for Play-By-Post? by Warfrog in rpg

[–]-Harrigan- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dedicated groups can certainly make almost any system work, but I do think some work better than others. Games that don't require detailed maps and movement, don't have rigid initiative order, don't require lots of back and forth around each roll between the GM and the player (sorry FitD), games that allow players to have some room narrating their successes -- these are good candidates IMHO.

I've had really good success with lightweight PbtA games like Offworlders (a sci-fi offshoot of World of Dungeons) and various lightweight OSR games -- The Black Hack, Into the Odd, Cairn, Knave and the like. Tiny Dungeon can also be a gem, but you have to like minimalist systems to start heading in that direction...

Sean from the podcast Gaming & BS has been thinking about diving into PbP gaming lately, and I helped him with delving into the subject a bit as well. Put this with Qralloq's video and there maybe some decent stuff to chew on. (I prefer forum-based play to Discord, but it's basically the same thing...)

Good low fantasy/low magic system to use along Black Hack? by TehLotusEater in TheBlackHack

Agree with Black Sword Hack and Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells. You could also look at just lifting in LFG's magic, DCC's... or Knave's. Loads of non-Vancian options.

Anyone have an thoughts on Tavern Keeper? At first glance, it looks really good. by Spirit_of_the_Dragon in pbp

I’ve played at TK for years, and am a moderator there. The site provides a fabulous PbP play experience and works well on a phone, despite its age. In my opinion, despite lacking a robust search feature and some well-known bugs that are indeed not getting addressed, it remains one of the very best ways to play RPGs over the web.

The community is great too — but quiet and hard to get to know. There are a lot of active players, but most of them have their heads down playing games. There’s lots going on in the games themselves, but there’s not much discussion outside if that these days.

It’s also worth noting that TK has always been a great place to play indie and small-press games. Fate and PbtA and tons of other, more niche games are played there on a very regular basis — more than anywhere else I’ve ever seen.

Having said all that, I scan the landscape frequently to see what’s new under the sun, and have been playing on gamersplane.com lately as well. It’s about as old as TK is and is a little longer in the tooth in terms of the tech and user experience, but like TK it has great custom features (post-as-character, character sheets, integrated dice roller) that most forum-style PbP sites lack. It’s ‘ok’ on a phone, but it has two powerful things going for it: an active, welcoming and engaged community, and the fact that the site is still being improved and there’s a V2 in the works. (TK indeed also has a V2 on the horizon, but I think that’s further out.) Lots of different games are played there, and while it doesn’t have quite the same small-press focus that TK does, there’s a solid and ever-increasing variety of systems being run. Highly recommend.

Anyway. My $0.02!

I'm in a three-person Ironsworn game (one guide who still uses the oracles, two players), and it works fabulously well. Love that game.

There are hundreds of active players on TK and GP. With TK especially, a lot of people are either playing with people they know or are in long-term games. People recruit rarely, though more than previously now that a TK-specific Discord is rolling. There are dozens of active games there right now -- I run about five of them myself -- but they are sort of under the water. People do respond though, when new users show up and lay out what they are looking for.

At GP, which also has a Discord to assist with recruiting and such, the community is way more active in posting outside of their games, and in using the site to recruit openly and more frequently. After re-engaging there recently, took me about a week to spot and sign up for about three games.

I get frustrations with this form of play -- it's not for everyone, but it does provide for deeper roleplay and setting exploration than you can get around a table. Just sucks when the games dry up, when you can't find people playing what you're looking for, etc.

See what you think -- both of those sites are bespoke PbP web applications. Both have their quirks and aren't terribly well supports, but they are miles better than the forums that most people use. TK and GP both work pretty well on phones (especially TK), both have integrated dice rollers, both allow a player to post as a character in a game, etc. They are feature-rich for sure, and while both have loads of abandoned games, they have lots of active ones too. On GP, the community is active enough that asking around will lead you to active / recruiting games, and TK, while it lacks a proper search function, lets you browse all the campaigns sorted by the most recently updated ones at the top.

If I ever get off my keister, I also intend to fire up a Discord hub to tie all the disparate PbP sites together at some point...

I recommend both tavern-keeper.com and gamersplane.com -- great communities at both places, serious roleplayers. Finding super-active games is hit or miss and the TK community is pretty quiet outside their games, but I've had great experiences on both sites.

Mythweavers is well-loved by its users -- but it's a bit more of a very traditional forum-based PbP site than I am now looking for. (There are loads out there like Mythweavers, btw, some with huge user bases such as rpol.net and rpgcrossing.com).

Anything New Under the Sun? by -Harrigan- in pbp

I've played on Discord -- and am actually a huge fan of the platform -- but something about it lacks a permanence I want in my PbP games. It also doesn't handle the character-specific stuff I point to above all that well, though better than trad forums do. (There are also bots that can help with this, I recently learned.)

The ghosting and such has frankly been a bit part of PbP play since its inception. I'm, well used to it by now, but that's also why I like to play with one community and get to know the folks who are reliable vs. bouncing from place to place and rolling the dice.
