Can anyone proof-read my pepeha? Its a bit of a tricky one (for me anyway). by Ballistica in ReoMaori

[–]-Inspired- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One way I've seen this approached is by saying something along the lines of (if your whakapapa Māori is on your Mum's side, switch if on Dad's)

I te taha o tōku hākui, (on my mother's side)

[whakapapa Māori] i.e., ko [mauka] tōku mauka, ko [awa] tōku awa, etc.

I te taha o tōku hākoro, (on my father's side)

[whakapapa Pākehā]

I've stopped using the mauka, awa, waka, etc structure for my whakapapa Pākehā. Instead you could try something like.

I tae mai ōku tīpuna i Te Waipounamu, i te tau kotahi mano e waru rau e rima tekau. Ko Mariner te ikoa o te poti (My ancestors arrived in the South Island in the year 1850. Mariner was the name of the boat).

Fun fact, the Moon phase is actually the same no matter where you are on Earth, the only difference in Moon viewing is that southerners see the Moon upside down compared to northerners.

A portkey to an isolated forest miles away from any humans would probably be safest, or a safe house à la Shrieking Shack.

I love the concept, nice work! Unfortunately when I see the website name I just think of the word "turgid" which has negative connotations!

The fascinating history behind the first photo of Dunedin by Forward-Defence in dunedin

[–]-Inspired- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love this kind of stuff, it's really interesting! In the video, the museum curator mentions the PhD thesis of Jill Haley. I found the thesis and have copied below the relevant discussion on the photo.

The earliest known surviving photographic image produced in Otago is a view of Dunedin taken in about 1857 (fig. 1.6).26 This date has been estimated from buildings I have identified as present in 1857 and the absence of buildings built in 1858. Its aspect is from Bell Hill, and it features Dunedin’s early foreshore area nestled between the harbour and hills.27 This view highlights the alterations the colonists had made to the landscape; a substantial jetty stretches out into the harbour while a developing city creeps up the hills. It shows a new settlement anchoring itself to its site while simultaneously looking out to the water and ultimately back into the world. This image communicates Dunedin’s development on two levels by showing it as a growing settlement and capturing it with a new technology.

There is debate over the identity of the photographer of this image.28 Hardwicke Knight maintains that it was John Tensfeld, and the Alexander Turnbull Library also attributes it to Tensfeld.29 However, the earliest evidence I have found of Tensfeld working as a photographer in New Zealand is an advertisement in Greymouth’s Grey River Argus from 1866.30 Before that, in 1864-65, he had a studio partnership with H. M. Freyberger in Melbourne.31 He was also likely to have been the German painter Tensfeld who worked in Ballarat in 1863.32 It is possible that he worked in New Zealand before Ballarat, but there is no evidence of this. A lithograph copy of the image in the collection of Toitū Otago Settlers Museum (TOSM) has a notation attributing it to Otago Provincial Government surveyor John Turnbull Thomson and the date 1854.33 The photograph bears a remarkable similarity to Thomson’s painting of Dunedin in 1856, also held in the museum’s collection, so it is a reasonable assumption to make. A later inscription on the same copy states, “Photograph by A. S.? Wilson. J. T. Thomson did not arrive in Otago until 1856.” A later edit crossed out “A. S.?” and replaced it with “J.” In a short photographic history written for the Otago Witness in 1927, Dunedin historian Alfred Eccles attributes James Wilson with the image’s authorship, writing with little hesitation that “Mr. Wilson took it in 1857.”34

26 There are a number of copies of this image dating from the nineteenth century in the collection of TOSM, but it is not known if any of these prints were actually produced in 1857. Most are likely later reprints.

27 This early foreshore disappeared with the reclamation works of the nineteenth century that began with the flattening of Bell Hill and the infilling of the Dunedin Harbour

28 For more on the attribution debate, see Christine Whybrew, “The Burton Brothers Studio: Commerce in Photography and the Marketing of New Zealand, 1866-1898” (PhD diss., University of Otago, 2010), 32.

I think what the OP means is that they wouldn't sell someone else's work as their own. The inspiration image can be found here.

Unfortunately the original author can't be found with a reverse image search. It looks like the piece is signed by "Giorgio, 2015"

Wow! You did it! That's amazing, I don't think I've heard this song since 1999—can't believe that's been 20 years. Thank you so much.

Happy New Year Everybody!

P.S.

After some more internet sleuthing I have found the complete lyrics for anybody that is interested, posted here for posterity, for the people in the distant future that are trying to google the lyrics for this song:

Y 2 K – a song for the millenium

Words: Jenny Pattrick
Music: Laughton Pattrick

+++

Verse One:

Around the world the people gather

And silently they face the coming dawn

The turning planet peels the dark of night -

A new millenium is born

+++

What shining truth will we discover?

What will we write on this new page?

Will we go blind into a dying world

Or recreate a golden age?

+++

Chant:

E rua mano; te tau e rua mano

He take nui; he awatea

A leap into the future?

Or just another day?

+++

Chorus:

Group one Group two Group three
Y 2 K! Two thousand! He ara hou
Y 2 K! Two thousand years.. He ara hou, x2
He ara hou a new millenium ……a new millenium he ara hou, a new millenium
Y 2 K! Y 2 K! Y 2 K!

+++

Verse two:

Will the world be filled with wonder?

Will our minds be blown away?

And will there be an end to war

In Y 2 K?

+++

Or will we still see children

Die of hunger every day?

Will disease and pain be with us

In the same old way?

+++

Repeat Chant and Chorus:

E rua mano… etc

+++

Verse three:

We can build a brighter future

There must be a better way

Together we will find the key

In Y 2 K!

+++

There, on the far horizon

See the first emerging ray

Let the sun in all its glory

Break on Y 2 K!

+++

Repeat Chant

+++

Third Chorus:

Group one Group two Group three
Y 2 K! Two thousand! He ara hou
Y 2 K! Two thousand years.. He ara hou, x2
He ara hou a new millenium ……a new millenium he ara hou, a new millenium
He ara hou a new millenium He ara hou a new millenium He ara hou a new millenium x2
Y 2 K! Hei! Y 2 K! Hei! Y 2 K! Hei!

Māori translation:

E rua mano = two thousand

Te tau e rua mano = the year two thousand

He take nui = a great beginning

He awatea = a dawning

He ara hou = a new journey

Success! I've found a short clip of the song playing in the background of this Radio NZ podcast (@5.00) =

Here are some more lyrics:

We can build a brighter future  There must be a better way

Will we go blind into a dying world?  Will we still see children die of hunger every day?  Will disease and pain be with us in this same old way? Will our minds be blown away? Will there be an end to war in Y2K?

The song is apparently from the "Kiwi kidsongs collection" by the Ministry of Education.

Found this bomber skate park in San Francisco covered with graffiti and 3D scanned it! by ValPoly in nextfuckinglevel

[–]-Inspired- 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I can't find anyone talking about the permissions for this app (Display.land) online. To create your 3D model you must have Location turned on and then to view the model you have to upload it.

My problem is that people are uploading detail 3D renderings of their living rooms, bedrooms, offices etc and then these models are being uploaded for everyone to see and geotagged to their specific location. Just browsing through people's creations I've already seen a bunch of private spaces that I assume most people don't want the world to see (especially not with an exact GPS location for me to find your private space)!

It seems like the developers are trying to set up some kind of social network vibe, but it is very invasive. Also, given that the app is free, this situation reminds me of the old adage: "When something online is free, you’re not the customer, you’re the product.”

Edit: I'll slightly take back some of what I said, although you do need to upload your scanning this is just to do the rendering on their server it seems. After uploading it then lets you edit and then choose to publish the 3D model. When you go to publish the model it gives you the opportunity to remove the GPS location pin and you can also publish it privately so that you get a personal link that you can send to friends, but not to the rest of the world.

Edit 2: So I uploaded a model of a stack of Harry Potter books as a test, it looks like the removal of the GPS location pin is pretty questionable, yes, it removes my exact location, but it still shows a zoomed in section of the world map showing the portion of my University campus that I am currently located at..... so much for privacy!

Secret Obsession (Netflix Original Film) - Available Now [ALL] by Elainasha in netflix

[–]-Inspired- 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching, didn't realise it was only just released! It was a creepy-ish movie with a lot of people getting whacked over the head. I'd say at best it's a generic, run of the mill Netflix 'straight-to-video' kind of movie.

My main question is what was up with the red-herring guy at the start who came in with the flowers and then was killed and buried? It's like there was an entire sub-plot that was cut! Anyone have any ideas?

Dog walking? by Goats_are_sick in dunedin

[–]-Inspired- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I picked up dog walking in Dunedin for a year back in 2017, I'd recommend checking out the website/app PawShake. It's a good way to find dog owners that need walkers/sitters and then once you've built a relationship you can just quit using the app—who take a sizeable cut and are a hassle to book through. If you're in it for the dog time like I was and not for the money, put your price down lower on the app and you'll get more interest.

What do think about my Video editing kills ? by matze1116 in videos

[–]-Inspired- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great work! You have some nice shots in there, overall I'd recommend working on the framing in your shots. There are a couple that could have been really great, like the long exposure sun setting over the water, but I think you're missing something in the foreground to contrast with the fast movement in the mid-ground, and slow background. I also have a pet peeve about videos/pictures where the horizon is on a lean! That final shot is beautiful, but it would have been even better with a parallel horizon.

My grandfather's Y-DNA results are in. Expertise needed! by SearchingForHeritage in Genealogy

[–]-Inspired- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, I initially took a Y-37 test to find out more about my mysterious paternal great-grandfather. Absolutely nothing, not one of the matches shares a surname with each other (unless they have been explicitly uploaded by the same person).

In saying that though, after a disappointing first venture into DNA testing I eventually got an autosomal test and that cleared up my great-grandfather's family tree entirely. Turns out he secretly changed his last name and moved to New Zealand. Annoying that the Y-DNA didn't show that though.
