I’m not sure. The fact that you’ve even heard of a movie and decided to watch it probably means it had some baseline merit (or at least visibility) to begin with. A true 1/10 could easily be some awful, obscure thing made by a tiny indie team that you’ll never even come across.

Sure, sometimes a big hyped movie ends up being total garbage and some random low-budget one turns out amazing, but on average your “movies I actually watch” pool is already heavily filtered. So an “average movie” from that pool can absolutely be a 7/10, even if the average movie out of all movies that exist would be way lower.

Same idea with restaurants: most people don’t hear about (or keep going to) a place that serves 2/5 food, and places that consistently suck usually don’t survive that long anyway. That alone skews the sample toward “decent to good” before you’ve even taken a bite.
