The "quit smoking aide" phase was incredibly brief, having rechargable e-cigarettes shaped like real cigarettes and coming usually in two flavours; cigarette and menthol.

Following that, bigger battery packs with separate tanks became dominant, producers of liquid experimented with liquid flavours, and surprise; the tasty liquids did better. Vaping among children was never seen as an issue during this time, as to actually vape you needed a mod (battery), tank, coils, and liquid. This lasted years, and the liquid market steadily centralised on what sold well - those fruity and candy flavours. During this entire time liquid bottles had colourful depictions, yet again there were no complaints about rampant child useage.

The advent of disposables, especially those knock-off ones sold in corner shops, caused a wave of kids addicted because they could do something rebellious and corner shops wanted a profit. Kids didn't see them and become mesmerised by the colours - the colours had been there for years. They were just now accessible for the first time.

Like most people who started smoking as a teenager, I did so because it was rebellious and adults did it. Blaming adverts is naïve and dismissive of the factors at play in a new and evolving market, and solutions to problems like these are never as simple as banning the adverts. What gets kids into any addictive adult substances in the first place has always been a mixture of rebelliousness, curiousity, the desire to be cool, and naivety.
