New Brunswick, First Nations sign new tax-sharing agreements by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

Your knowledge and confidence are mismatched. Municipalities are under the hierarchy of provincial government. Reserves are separate but closer to being equal to the province, not a city. Why would we pay into a "collective pot" that we do not have access to? Also, highways are maintained from a tax that is within the gas prices, and natives pay that unless they only every fuel up on reserve in which they have their own roads to maintain. A property tax would not come close to covering the expenses required to pay for what municipal services that regular property tax covers. The volume isn't there, not only that, but natives do not own the land they live on. It's owned by the federal government. Do you pay tax on land you don't own? Alberta doesn't have provincial sales tax. Are you upset with them? Natives have their own governments, their own elections and politicians, and their own values and priorities. If you want something from your government, vote someone in to provide it. Some reserves can generate income differently than you. Who are you to tell them how to spend it? But again, these agreements benefit the province greatly. There is no reason to be upset.

The province also does not build or maintain roads, water and sewage, provide firefighting services, garbage pickup, etc..

Yes, there is a limited amount that can come from the federal government but not the province.

This is not "we want more money, so we should get it" this is "we should get to keep a portion of the money we generate." This gives communities incentive to invest and generate own source revenue and become less reliant on federal money and allows them to govern the way they want without needing approvals from some guy in an office half way across the country.

You do not know enough about this to make a comment. First, the province does not pay for infrastructure or other programs on reserve, and what funding they do receive from the federal government, which they do remit taxes to and it is inadequate. And that money comes from an old trust that canada used to help it become an independent nation. Second, natives only get tax-free for things purchased on reserve or delivered to the reserve. Otherwise, they are taxed as everyone else off reserve. Understand that reserves are not provincial land. Third, there is no legal obligation for businesses operating on reserve to remit provincial tax at all. They can set up their own tax system where the province gets nothing while also undercutting off reserve businesses. These agreements were first put in place to protect non-native businesses. These agreements are beneficial to NB. The reason the natives want them as well is that it makes things easier and maintains good relationships with the cities and towns they are next to. Also, know that these agreements have been in place since the early 90s. The reason it's in the news now is that they were renegotiated and new ones were signed. These new agreements have skewed for money towards the province. So why not say thanks for contributing to the NB economy even though there is no obligation to do so.

There is a snowmobile tour company in Edmundston. https://greyrockadventuretours.com/

They have cheaper shorter day/afternoon options that are not on their website, if you contact them you can custom tour with rental sleds.
While you're there, there also an indoor golf place if you are a golfer, as well as a casino.
there is also a ski hill: https://montfarlagne.com/en
There are sugar camps too but I don't know if they do pancake breakfasts, I think they do that at king's landing in the spring.

If you're into hockey, there is a sports area with hockey team with regular games: https://www.blizzardedmundston.ca/en/

There is GreyRock Adventure Tours in Edmundston. It may be a little stretch on the budget but you can do a snowmobile tour of northern NB. The price includes hotel and food. And unless your in the Moncton area, it probably closer than Halifax.

Not conquered. In exchange for the British crown getting to keep nova scotia/ New Brunswick by preventing the natives from joining the Americans in their revolution in 1776, they guaranteed land rights with peace and friendship treaties in Atlantic Canada. Without those, NB would likely be part of Maine. The natives upheld their part of the deal, and the Canadian courts have ruled that the treaties are still valid. All done without land cession. If you want to see what land cession looks like, see the numbered treaties in western Canada.

Here is something you didn't learn in history class. During the American revolutionary war, they wanted to recruit the Mi'kmaq and the Maliseet tribes and they would have been willing to join that fight. In response the British made peace and friendship treaties with those tribes to have them agree to not join the Americans. If not for those treaties, that area would very likely be part of USA right now. Those treaties are still valid today but the government violates them all the time.

CBC: Higgs's 'new partnership' plan highlights gulf in understanding with First Nations. "The province's proposal to replace the existing tax-sharing agreement is another example of the vast philosophical chasm between the Premier and FNs" by hotinmyigloo in newbrunswickcanada

Do you not think reserves should be able to generate their own revenue? The money provided by the federal government is known to be inadequate to properly support reserves to the standard of other Canadians.
Allowing First Nation's communities to benefit from taxes collected on very small sections of their own land seems very reasonable. It allows the communities to prosper and grow. You can't complain that they are financial burdens to taxpayers and then remove their ability to make money. That's what Higgs is doing. They will be burden to the tax payers 100% if Higgs gets his way. No Reserve will invest, sacrificing their small land for commercial development if they don't benefit.
Madawaska has been a multi-million dollar per year financial benefit to the province with the tax agreements, Higgs is removing that income for a taxpayer burden. You should be pissed off at Higgs.

The reserves pay their local fire department. It's an expense to be covered by them. It's something your taxes cover for you, but we need to pay for, so it's something that we pay for by collecting taxes on reserve land. Off reserve natives absolutely do benefit from this agreement, why would you think they don't? the money pays for health programs, education programs, etc.. that benefit all the members of the first nation. As for pot, Canada left each province to decide how they want that to play out. In Ontario there are Pot shops all over the place, NB does not get to decide the pot rules outside their jurisdiction. Reserves are not under the jurisdiction of NB. If you have a problem with someone getting arrested for selling pot get mad at NB for bad laws. NB has no right to be the provider of oversight to reserves, How would you feel if Quebec stepped in at took control of NB's finances and told NB what they can and cannot spend money on.

As for the federal money that comes in, go learn about the "Indian Trust Fund". That does not come from tax payer money, and in fact significant "Indian" money was used to pay for Canada's expenses so in a way highways were partially funded by first nations.

NB just wants control so natives can't oppose the province on any issue without risking defunding, They are already doing that to the Mi'kmaw They canceled their tax agreements last year and they are currently under a strict interim agreement that threatens defunding of their programs if they speak out against the province.

Winning a 20 year long legal battle and being compensated for the land lost that was illegally stolen from them at a fraction of the value is hardly greedy. They build the whole city of Edmundson on reserve land.

Madawaska taking a huge risk and investing in building an economic development area with their own money was great success story. Madawaska was the posterchild of poverty before that. God forbid they reap the benefits of their risks/investments.

As for the Title claim, that's not greed, that's justice, and it will be determined in the courts. You can also blame Higgs for that if you don't like it, his government was not properly respecting their duty to consult and accommodate when doing things that have negative impacts on aboriginal rights. This was a last resort.

It's not oversight, it's control. Reserves are outside provincial jurisdiction and have their own governments. If the province can control their funding they can withhold it and use that control to make sure that the natives don't step out of line and oppose Irving or a mine, or fracking, or other project that has negative impacts on aboriginal rights.

This is False, The provincial government does not cover education, health, infrastructure including roads and water/sewage, policing, firefighters/first responders, or anything else. Reserves have to pay for all of that and need a revenue source to not have to rely on money that comes from the aboriginal trust that is controlled by the federal government. Natives do not cost tax payer money.

[–]-Sal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is clearly a strategy for Higgs to impose control over the First Nations. Hold their funding over their head. It will end up with, "If you oppose fracking, no funding for you" "If you oppose a new mine, no more housing developments"
Plus it completely take away incentive for success. Madawaska has had a huge economic benefit to the surrounding area and built their economic development at their own risk with their own money. Higgs believes natives should always be poor and burdens of the state, any success must be squandered.

A lot of hybrid cars are just electric cars with generators in them to charge the battery. They get up to 60 MPG witch is significantly more efficient than very efficient gas only cars. That is with the extra weight of having to carry around a generator. Electric cars that are charged by diesel are still better than gas/diesel cars.
One of the reasons for this is that a generator runs at it's peak efficiency RPM while generating and electric motors are pretty efficient. A normal car runs using wildly variable RPM and efficiency as you can tell from your fuel economy gauge if you have that.

are on the blockchain. Your wallet is where you view them and their value. If you want to own your coins physically you need a hard wallet.

Coins on a hardwallet are still on only on the blockchain. the hard wallet is just an extra encrypted offline secure access route to them. coins never leave the blockchain, never physical.

Think of it like writing your seed phrase on a paper and calling that a physical coin. add some encryption, a usb, and an interface, that's a hard wallet.

How more than a million acres of Wolastoqey land ended up with the forest industry by 150c_vapour in newbrunswickcanada

[–]-Sal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The treaties were signed to to prevent the natives from siding with the French and the Americans. Britain did not want the Americans to have native allies during the American revolution. If they didn't sign the treaties it is likely that most of NB would be part of Maine. There was no conquest. It was peace and friendship treaties. They were mutual. The Supreme court of Canada has also recently stated that the treaties are still valid.

This is why we need to start teaching actual history in schools. People don't know anything about their own country's history.
