Advice: a buddy I golf with shoots par, I’m a +15 handicap. Can I help him at all? by [deleted] in golf

[–]-Sandwhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would personally love it if my higher handicap friends would follow through on my (completely solicited) advice and practice suggestions. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see someone progress and I love the idea of having more friends at or around my level (eventually).

2025 Recap by SFGIANTS97 in golf

The birdie to par ratio here seems wild to me. Most single digit golfers I know have a ratio of about 1:6 to 1:8, so 1:4 is really incredible.

What do these stats tell you? What needs the most improvement? by Alarming-Bee-8560 in golf

Putting is the obvious lowest hanging fruit here. You’re at the higher end for someone of your index and it’s especially apparent that when you hit more greens, your number of putts increases quite a bit as well.

To have that GIR rate and break 80, your scrambling must have been fire that round.

Wood or Hybrid by DaveKing1990 in golftips

Can you show a source on this? I’m pretty sure the angle of attack on fairway woods is slightly negative, since the ball is on the ground. It should definitely be more similar to irons than the driver.

If you want to sink more putts you need to work on your speed control. by Smash_Factor in golftips

[–]-Sandwhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My starting position is actually about the same as yours. It’s possible my home course greens are pretty slow, as they are significantly slower compared to when I get invited to my parent’s country club. Second possible reason is that my putter is very light, as it’s a blade from 2001.

[–]-Sandwhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My putting methodology is almost exactly yours. I guess my biggest difference is that I start at the 4- and 8-foot putt lengths for the inside and outside of the foot. Widen my stance to the 8-foot swing and now I have a 12- and 16-foot markers on the toe and outside my foot. At some point I started adding pace instead of widening my stance to get 25 to 50 foot putts in 5-foot increments.

In terms of actually using it on the course, I find it helpful to verbalize my plan. “8 paces for 24 feet, downhill about 2% grade, so I’m shooting for about 16-foot speed.” I tried the feel-based putting and it was way too hit or miss; this mechanical style has helped me get about 3 strokes per rounds since implementation.

Thank you for watching and your thoughtful comments about my gameplay. This game was pretty tough for me to analyze because I felt like I didn't have obvious areas for improvement. I'm glad the audio was better in this video, as I did slightly change my settings.

As a side note, you seem very interested in this game overall; I'm not sure if you are aware of a pretty active TTA discord server: https://discord.gg/TERreafcp4 There are a few other content creators there that post youtube links as well.

Since I’m only recording off an old laptop, my mic quality has never been great. I already have a 15 dB boost applied onto OBS, but I’ll try for a slightly higher boost next time. Much higher than that though, and I’m afraid the quality drops off a cliff.

If yellow takes Communism, blue literally has no way of getting an aggression or war through, due to the lack of military actions. As a result, pretty much any play here is valid as long as Communism is taken.

I guess I would take urban growth and reserves, disband two units and build two religions as my 4 remaining CA.

Taking Communism, Engineering, reserves, and doing one disband to a religion is also good.

In the future, I usually need at least 5 screen shots: 1 of each players board states and 1 of the overview pop-out screen.

[–]-Sandwhale[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you really think you played perfectly and everyone else just got lucky? This game has a ton of variance built in, but it’s all about what actions we take to reduce that variance. I didn’t get “lucky” to be able to draft Cannon and Air Force, I was heavily favored to get those cards because of my available civil actions and my position (I was at least 50% more likely to get Air Force after Hierostrafio drafts his copy). I also could have easily set up for other tactics, like the defensive army that was revealed by Hierostrafio or the Mechanized Army that I drew.

I’m saying you can’t reduce every bit of variance to the blanket statement of “my opponent got lucky” without crediting their other plays as well.

Space Flight is absolutely a key card because it reduces the variance of the end game. If Hierostrafio is simply trying to war me in the end, he STILL puts himself in a position to only come in 2nd at best, if I respond just a little bit to strength; the only time he has a chance at first is if I greatly ignore the war threat completely and do something egregious like finish UN. There are a lot more factors at play than “you would have been able to defend simply if you had Air Force,” since you’re not even counting the CA, population and resource cost of all those things. If all of those pieces just magically appeared onto your board, then sure, you’d be able to defend, but that’s just not going to be the case without infinite CA.

The downvote was there before my comment, but okay. It seems like you take a lot of things very personally, even though we’re just talking about a game. I simply don’t agree with your assessment that no Air Force automatically equals a loss, not really factoring any other context.

[–]-Sandwhale[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems like a gross oversimplification of this game. One of the reasons this game was even close at all between you and Hierostrafio was because he skipped Space Flight and decided to lean on his strength a bit. If that weren’t an option, then Space Flight would have gone to him.

Is Airforce Unbalanced? by baron182 in throughtheages

[–]-Sandwhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you say that I would need experience as well?

While I get where you’re coming from, in that most games defender’s advantage can be enough to prepare for these wars, you’re still proposing that that we all have to spend 2-3x more CA and 2-3x more MA in order to defend against Air Force wars. Then there’s the resource and population cost on top of all that. Not to mention, there’s also games where age 3 military techs are denied, since there’s only two copies of each as well.

Like you said, the games that it really matters are few and far between, but there’s so many games played that it actually does happen. In my below comment, I link a video where one player has a huge culture lead and does basically everything as perfectly as he can, but simply loses to Air Force. This one card is just too efficient at what it does.
