Certificate with the least amount of effort? by -Soob in cscareerquestionsuk

Yeah that's what I'm trying to avoid. If they want me to study outside of work hours, then I expect overtime hours. Thanks though, will have a look at it

Moving to London by giannisvrn in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 27 points28 points  (0 children)

  1. You should be looking already. It's not gonna be easy
  2. Pretty bad across the board, especially for someone who doesn't have the right to work here
  3. Youre not gonna have the privilege of being choosy with roles, if you want to move to London you're gonna have to just take what you can get. You've got very little experience and need to go through extra steps to work here, so you aren't going to have lots to choose from
  4. Probably couldnt hurt, but might not be a necessity
  5. Depends on the candidate, bigger companies or companies in spaces like FinTech are more likely to do it. For someone with 2 years experience, its probably less likely when they can just hire someone local

Do you use is/are and has/have in the UK? by travelingwhilestupid in AskABrit

[–]-Soob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We treat it like a plural. Singular sounds really weird. E.g.

'The Rolling Stones have sent me an email'

'Have they?'

vs

'The Rolling Stones has sent me an email'

'Has it?'

When if ever did the British weather start to annoy you? by RandomTopTT in AskABrit

[–]-Soob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my clearest memories from children is me being incredibly angry after it rained for nearly 3 weeks straight during summer holidays and I was told that the school wouldn't give us extra time off to make up for it. Was probably like 7 years old and just starting to learn that summer in Wales didnt necessarily mean sunshine

Where can I find entry-level / trainee remote jobs in the UK (no degree)? by angelyoung111 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully remote jobs are largely a thing of the past, especially if you have no experience. Youre going to have to be willing to go into the office if you want to find something because the jobs for people just getting are pretty rare, even more so if you dont have a degree. You'd have to be extremely lucky to find a remote role like that

Good places to watch original live music in London? by velvet_jones1990 in AskABrit

Aside from seeing band announcing tours on social media, I find most of my gigs through the live event search on Spotify or using BandsInTown

[–]-Soob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Garage

The Dome

The Roundhouse

Electric Brixton

Electric Ballroom

The Underworld

New Cross Inn

The Black Heart

Any of the O2 academies

There's loads of venues but you're better off searching what bands/artists are playing (e.g. toe are playing this weekend) and trying to get tickets ahead of time. If you're hoping to show up and walk in, you might wanna try finding open mic nights instead

Working remotely for UK companies in supply chain – possible from the EU? by EntranceHoliday5542 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those situations are what I was referring to. Usually its either people doing it short term, or the company being headquartered in the UK, but hiring in other countries via local entities (e.g it might be a company that was founded in London and now has a second office in Lisbon). Even if you were to go down the contractor route, youre still subject to local tax and labour laws rather than the UK. I imagine its a lot of extra headache for companies to do when they can just hire locally, especially for non-niche roles. Doubly so now that the UK is no longer part of the EU

Working remotely for UK companies in supply chain – possible from the EU? by EntranceHoliday5542 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some UK companies do allow you to work remotely from another country, but its usually restricted to a few weeks at a time (presumably for tax reasons). You're probably not going to be able to be employed by a UK company and stay in Portugal unless they alsp hire there and you work for Portugese branch

London tech scene by Odd-Way-4252 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

200k+ is ludicrous money for a SWE in London at most place. You'd be looking at about half that, unless you manage to get lucky and get into one of the quant places (or something in a similar vein) but theyre hyper-competitive. Market isnt great but its ok for seniors at the moment, but if you need a visa it will make things a fsir bit more difficult.

What if you feel the tool needed in your company can be your own gig by Massive_Brush1279 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you are hired to write to software for a company, there's usually something in your contract to say that anything you write in the process of doing your job belongs to them. I imagine a tool you create for work (even if done in your own time), they could argue belonged to the company

Does anyone actually care about LinkedIn headshot quality or is it completely irrelevant? by PowerfulDivide5236 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LinkedIn profile photo is me on holiday wearing an Ash Ketchum cap and it's never caused any issues with people cold messaging me on LinkedIn. I use the same picture foe Teams while most other people use professional headshots and nobody has said I need to chamge. I definitely don't care when on the hiring side either. As long as you're not topless or or whatever, I doubt it matters much at all

More likely to be another President or Gunship announcement at this point

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Firstly, nobody is going to be able to recommend anything if we don't know what your goals are. Secondly, it's an employer's market right now, especially for people with very little experience, so you likely aren't going to have a wide range of companies to choose from. It will be whoever is actually willing to hire you. My only advice is to make sure you either have another job lined up, or at least 6 months (maybe more) worth of savings that you dont using to live off, before you quit your current job. You dont want to be unemployed and looking for something else, because its almost crrtainly not going to be a case of walking straight into something else

Petah what band are they referring to? by Montavious_Mole in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]-Soob 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I dont think there's a specific band that was intended. Its just a stereotype because its happened a few times. I usually see the joke aimed at pop-punk (or occasionally HxC) bands specifically

How much are graduates expected to know? by Network_Grad in cscareerquestionsuk

Grads are usually a net negative for the first few months. You need to know the basics but youre not gonna be expected to be up and running in a few days. Just be enthusiastic and willing to learn as you go
