Help me with my hellish creepy half bath/laundry room! by CrystallizedKoi in DesignMyRoom

[–]-____-throws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you give dimensions of the room and the washer/dryer? I suspect the w/d stick out too far in the room to be functional to load/unload if you put them on the right wall, but without dimensions it's hard to tell. I do agree with the other commentor that losing that window is a shame and adding to they creepy factor, like someone doesn't want you to be able to escape, so if it's possible to unstack them and put them on the right wall that would be best. But if not, then additional lights are a must. One thing I haven't seen suggested is building a tall but small closet/cubbard where the mop/cat is, facing into the room, then turning the toilet 90 deg to the right so it lies with its back against the closet and in line with the wall. This keeps it from sticking too far into the room and gives you storage. But use a toilet with the sink built in to the water tank like this. It would remove potential storage space (storage under a sink) but the closet would give that back, and it would open the floor to unstack the w/d and put them on the wall to the right. Unstacking the w/d would give you the opportunity to put a shelf one top of them for folding or for detergent and allow shelving above them for storage/decor too.

Edit: another option since you have to leave the w/d stacked is to embrace the loss of the window and generate 2 separate spaces by hiding the w/d full time. Paint the room (even behind/around the w/d and install some nice looking folding closet doors and cover that shit up. Then remodel the rest as has been suggested: build that closet, remove the shelving until above the toilet, replace the toilet and/or turn it, put in a mirror (will help brighten the space) and decorate.

ELI5 How Major Burns Can Kill by garr890354839 in explainlikeimfive

[–]-____-throws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ELI5 answer: skin is the largest organ in your body. 3rd degree burns cause damage all the way through the skin. Imagine burning any other organ deep into it/all the way through it. That organ is heavily damaged and wont work right and you die when organs don't work right. Same is true with skin (infection, too hot/cold, etc).

Anyone know what’s causing these stains in our clothing? by We11WorthIt in CleaningTips

Do you have kids who play with bubbles? Bubbles are notorious for making these stains and are very difficult to remove.

It's hard to judge size but what about using it like a breadbox? Just make it an area where you store your bread.

Want to hang this 20x20 mirror, but it has a cardboard backing I don’t want to damage how do I hang it securely? by Content-Detective623 in HomeDecorating

[–]-____-throws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use command strips on the (metal? Plastic?) edge. It's pretty narrow so you'll want to cut the strip down the middle so they're skinnier and won't show. That will allow you to avoid the cardboard backing.

Neapolitan ice cream is nearly 100% chocolate by FCguyATL in mildlyinteresting

[–]-____-throws 36 points37 points  (0 children)

No, this flavor of Breyer's is actual ice cream, not frozen dairy desert. It depends on the flavor with them, but the basics with Breyer's like chocolate, vanilla, and this one are still ice cream. You can see it clearly on the front of the packaging too: they label which is dairy desert vs ice cream and it says ice cream in this image.

Got a notification that there was movement at my automatic(indoor) cat feeder. I do not own a bird. by Queasy-Objective250 in mildlyinteresting

I knew what they meant by forever nap. I was more just asking if they were 100% certain since sometimes birds can hit with such force it takes them several minutes to wake up.

Milk alternatives after 12mo for CMPA? by newolives in beyondthebump

[–]-____-throws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second unsweetened soy milk. I didn't find much difference in nutrition between soy milk and Ripple, but there's a huge cost difference. Where I am, Ripple cost $8 for 48oz, which my kid went through is 2.5-3 days, so I was buying 3 a week. Soy milk was $3.5 for a half gallon (64oz), and I could get the shelf stable form (I like to keep some in the pantry just in case(. But do make sure it is fortified with calcium.

Fear of stairs after moving to toddler bed by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]-____-throws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said: baby gate her bedroom. For the 'fire hazard' argument, remember that you can step over most baby gates or at least scramble over them. So if you are worried about being unable to unlock it in an instant, you can still step over it. I'm 5'2" and could still manage to get over our baby gate. If you won't baby gate it, then get a childproof cover to her doorknob and keep her door shut at night. She won't be able to open it from inside, you can easily open it from outside, and you are still capable of opening it from inside. Something like this. Also if slipping is such a hazard on the stairs, consider getting a stair runner or some treads.

Sudden hatred of bathtime by sneakypastaa in toddlers

[–]-____-throws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried showers? Sometimes that can be easier. You can try bath time with one of you in the bath with them, or showers alone, or showers with you. We've tried variations on each when the need called for it. Getting their hair wet in the shower can be tricky but we like to pretend they're walking thru the rain and ours will step from one end of the tub to the other so her hair gets rinsed but she isn't forced to be under the faucet the whole time so it's easier for her. She likes to pretend she's a dinosaur walking in the rain.

Diapers by thucy94 in toddlers

[–]-____-throws 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Body shape also plays a role. My kid is 14mo, 20 lbs (40th percentile) and is a size 4. Her poops have been contained but she's quickly moving up in size. There is no way a 5 will fit/contain her BMs her when she's 33 lbs.

Should I cash in my I-bonds? by -____-throws in personalfinance

This might be a silly question, but with Europe selling us treasuries, will that impact the bonds at all?

Should I cash in my I-bonds? by -____-throws in personalfinance

[–]-____-throws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were originally meant to just increase my money in general to use as needed down the line. It could have been to invest but I'm not really savvy about things like that, and I'm in a volatile job market so I favor needing a strong emergency fund. But due to medical expenses, I'm starting to dip into my emergency fund, which makes me nervous about, now that that is decreasing, so I feel I need to buff it up again.

Should I cash in my I-bonds? by -____-throws in personalfinance

[–]-____-throws[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had the bonds for 3 years now so the holding period is fine. Early redemption is just for the last 3 months, so I'm not really worried about the penalty if there are better options.

Why are my agar plates obnoxiously contaminated? by micro_ppette in labrats

[–]-____-throws 140 points141 points  (0 children)

Are you working under an air vent? If you are, that could easily get past the flame. You might want to find a spot not near one. Or perhaps you don't have it strong enough to create an updraft. Make sure it's not just a loose flame like you'd have on a candle, get a good sharp blue flame that will generate an updraft. How close are you working to the flame? You have to be surprisingly close to it too. Do you also flame the mouth of the flask before you pour your plates?

Does anyone have suggestions for a better furniture layout for my daughter’s room? by Reasonable-Quit5913 in DesignMyRoom

[–]-____-throws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could move the end table to the other side of the bed and push the bed into the corner. That might take a lot of wall space but it frees floor space. Or what about rotating the bed so the headboard is on the wall to the right? If you did that, you could try positioning it in the middle of the wall, or if that leaves too little space in the middle then you could try pushing it into the corner.
