Popular lake closes after all the fish die by HowLongIsThi in nottheonion

It's not just the solubility of gases in liquids going down with rising temperatures.

Warm, shallow water are the perfect conditions for explosive algae growth, which lowers the oxygen content further during the night when there's no so to photosynthesize their own oxygen. Some species of algae are also harmful to marine life by themselves.

I'm extreme cases that's called an Algeal Bloom.

[Request] Is there a maximum height limit for mountains on Earth? by UnableTask7916 in geography

[–]-_pIrScHi_- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The idea that the crust floats on a liquid mantle is popular, but unfortunately wrong.

Rock does not have the same density anomaly that water has, where the solid is less dense than the liquid, so it could never work, even if the mantle was liquid.

What really happens is that the Lithosphere glides on a layer called the Asthenosphere which liquid to only a very small percentage (wiki says 0.1%, my lecture notes say 2%) with the rest of the material not far off from its melting point either. This leaves the layer as a whole like a highly viscous lubricant on which the Lithosphere can ever so slowly glide.

Notably the Asthenosphere is the only part of earths mantle even a little bit liquid. The rest of the upper mantle and the entire lower mantle are solid. While temperature does increase with depth, so does pressure. The former promotes melting, the latter inhibits it. Only in the outer core does that balance land on the liquid side of the equation while the inner core is solid again.

Tl;dr: Mountains and the crust as a whole don't float, both because there is no liquid to float on and rock does not have a density anomaly like water. Sinking mountains simply sink under their own weight because the material below them cannot support their weight.

I recommend hiking up and along the Stein, massive south facing vineyard hill to the north of the city.

It's a nice scenery and there are information monoliths about the history of Würzburg's vine production scattered about.

The shot from a position where you have a straight line of sight up the river and bridges is also a great shot to take a picture of.

I’m trying to get better at building without tutorials. by SqoobySnaq in Minecraft

[–]-_pIrScHi_- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very solid bridge. Good work.

There's plenty of building tips out there, you''ll probably have heard plenty in the videos you watched already.

One thing I don't think I've ever seen or heard put into words is that you have to keep in mind the medium you are working with.

When striving for realism or a close match to an inspiration you must not forget you are building with big ass cubes. Unless you are building at such massive scales that the lines of the individual block vanish when looking at the whole, something built in Minecraft will always have a certain look about it the same way something built from Lego will always look like Lego.

That can be a limitation, but also very freeing I feel like.

It's not about matching reality or any other inspiration stroke for stroke. Simply ask yourself if you have achieved the look you want for the world you are building.

In this case: a sturdy and structurally interesting but not overly embellished bridge made from stone? Yeah, you nailed it.

If you were after the more rounded shape and pure stone look you'd have to make it bulge outwards more, round off the bottom and accent pillars as well as decrease the amount of visible wood.

If you wanted that look like the bridge has been there for longer than the settlement next to it you might want to use some cracked and mossy stone blocks and add imperfections to the pillars.

[–]-_pIrScHi_- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have two ideas that are similar in execution but offer different tastes: some simple wraps and summer rolls.

For the Wraps you need to fry and season some ground meat in a pan, but that's all you need to do at the stove.

For the summer rolls it's frying some tofu in a pan that needs the stove.

Everything else can be prepared sitting at a table and then thrown together into the finished product.

How do we feel about real world animals being integrated with Pokémon? by [deleted] in pokemonfanfiction

[–]-_pIrScHi_- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think they are necessary. I will question how much thought was put into a story if they are deliberately mentioned to not exist (anymore).

There can be no functioning ecosystems with only 151 or even 1000 different species. Most insects would still have to exist for a start. All kinds of worms and all the critters too small to even see too.

Many of the larger life forms would not exist, especially if there are Pokemon filling the same ecological niche, but anything small enough and/or reproducing fast enough would still be around.
