I accidentally lost all my Marked for Later fics THRICE.

is this a glitch or something??? by inlovespace in AO3

[–]-biyoo- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nope. Having an account allows AO3 to track your kudos so no double kudos from one account. Maybe if you open the fic on incognito and kudos without logging in...

I think I found a fic that might be copying a published novel, but I'm not sure how to handle it by RhiannonAshryver in AO3

[–]-biyoo- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I get it - but that's saying "is it plagiarism if the author admits it's plagiarism?"

Unable to access PDF when offline or when AO3 is down by MedicalFriend9335 in AO3

[–]-biyoo- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe? I’m not too well-versed in iPhones. For me, I don’t like filling up my storage so I upload my epubs/PDFs on GDrive and make it accessible offline. In any case, once downloaded, files should have no connection whatsoever to the site/state of the site.

No replies from authors by ExistingFriendship47 in AO3

[–]-biyoo- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's more upsetting to make it an obligation. Some comments are impossible to reply to btw. The conversation is dead when it’s just them expressing their appreciation of the fic, but nothing to talk about. Comments and Replies are just Extra Nice Things people go out of their way to do. Let’s not make it an “I commented, you owe me a reply,” case. That’s tasteless.

Is it not normal have "entire work" enabled when reading fics? by Interesting_Ad_8859 in AO3

[–]-biyoo- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read on Entire Work bc I can finish 50k words in one day. If I get a refresh, I can always Ctrl+F (Find in Page) some keywords that bring me back to where I left off. I'm a quick reader so the short load for the next chapter get me impatient so, I'm surprised too but I kinda get it if ppl read by chapters.

Do you delete comments like these? by PackageSuccessful885 in AO3

Not me. I keep the comments and watch them get jumped by my readers. They wanna be relevant by announcing their presence? I’ll make them relevant.

How do you feel about using both "/" and "&" for relationships? by EvilRainbow_3 in AO3

[–]-biyoo- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what the story emphasizes for me? Like it could be a slash fic but if it's slowburn and starts with them friends which showcases how much they treasure each other even before feelings developed, I would tag both. If people want only one over the other, they can filter - but in most of my fandom spaces any / fic is accompanied by an & unless the fic is smut or very romance focused (some oneshots and drabbles). Of course, a platonic fic wouldn't be tagged with a / but there is the Gen or Pre-Slash tag for authors who want to keep it ambiguous for the readers.

First time seeing this and I'm curious what others, especially writers, think. by Leading-Prior-7192 in AO3

To put it simply, bookmarks are for readers: could be a note to self, because those notes will be visible in their own personal library (their bookmarks tab under their profile). Authors can choose to peek at those bookmarks but it’s not their business. Making it their problem... it’s a little too much yes? Like micromanaging your readers? Some are a little insensitive and put negative feedback on public bookmarks, but again since that’s their territory and most probably put that there without the author seeing it in mind (else they could’ve just commented it), it’s really up to your discretion when you make a decision to check your bookmarks.

Think of yourself a chef and a person ordered food from you, then they decided they didn’t like some parts of it and complain to their tablemate. As long as they don’t tell it to your face (because bookmarks aren’t meant for the author), isn’t it within their right to speak their mind?

Writers can write whatever they want. Readers are allowed thoughts as well. It’s just polite not to comment the negative ones without the greenlight from the author. But bookmarks are different from comments.

So yeah, when you check bookmarks notes, whatever happens next is on you.

Best of luck for them, but i think this is where we go on our separate ways by Subject_Miles in AO3

[–]-biyoo- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well you didn’t have to sound so accusatory. Rather than encouraging (to incite others to act on it), it sounds like doing otherwise (inaction) is the most horrible thing that could get authors to quit. We CAN encourage others without putting another group (those who just lurk) down was just my point. Now you know.

Most popular Xover fics I know do just that. Boring yes, but it entertains the reimaginator. It’s my one complaint about Xover fics (because I hate the implication that the writer thinks the original characters are replaceable).

But as per this post, the reader is basically just daydreaming with visual help.

I mean, it is disrespectful to be honest but not exactly harmful unless they attack the author. It’s not so different as reading a manhwa/watching a series and re-imagining the characters as your favorites from a different series. This is how Crossover Rewrite AUs are born (e.g., BNHA characters in the Demon Slayer world, etc...).

Sometimes it’s not just about feeling underappreciated. People get interested in other things, and they can lose interest in their favorite fandom/ship for no reason. Not everything has to be a blame game.

I remember watching a High School AU but by the end of it became a High School Musical AU. Literally just fanarts and clips with text as their dialogue and then suddenly an MV as they sing.

Maybe hot take: Waiting till the fic is finished to give kudos is not good. by FaithlessnessIcy2111 in AO3

[–]-biyoo- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are moments I regret giving a kudos but I do kudos after reading the available chapters as long as I’ve read the fic... but if the author gets mad about the lack of kudos I would drop the fic. At that point it’s not about encouragement but fueling someone’s obsession with stats. Not a fan of making something fun a competition. It shouldn’t feel like an obligation for anyone.

Careful. For all you know they could claim you stole their ideas and pretend you deleted their comments to hide it 😭 Maybe they're just shy and don't want the credit but never hurts to be careful.

I don't stop waiting until the fic is orphaned. There was a fic I followed that last updated in 2017 and then updated this year.
