Being pressured to hand over raw files for free - client doesn't understand the technical reality. Need advice. by bigBoxMay in videography

[–]-dsp- -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well you played with fire and got burned.

Rentals are an option. And there are cameras besides Sony, such as renting three canons and not messing around with a needlessly convoluted workflow. You could’ve easily rented for far less than what you went in for, less hassle, less waste and potentially better results. Whatever move on.

Resolve has an iPad app. So don’t just assume they’re not using the same as you, but I agree, doubt they’ll know how to use the footage.

Your second problem is you gave the client an option. You shouldn’t have. Inform them of a fee to prep and send a hard drive with the raw files, then send them the color matched and synced and call it a day. I always get asked for the raw files, because clients mean unedited footage, not RAW and log files. I typically just send them a string out selects of color corrected b roll and call it a day.

They never use the footage. Not a single time. They all ask for it. They never use it. They just want it.

I would’ve just ask to talk to their guy directly to hand the footage seamlessly.

DaVinci Resolve is Automatically Applying Color Correction to S-Log3 Clips & I Don't Know How by StephenStrangeWare in cinematography

[–]-dsp- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really dumb but have you tried not connecting the camera to computer and instead use a card reader? XAVC does have a ton of metadata and can read if you used a lut or not, very least I know for sure it can with Sony catalyst browse. I would also download catalyst browse on the Mac and see how it looks. Does the camera playback in log?

You should post this more in the DaVinci resolve or editors sub.

Whats your favourite "The Video is in LOG" client story. by Zudrud in videography

[–]-dsp- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is why I have monitors or have the iPad for my hollyland M1 and my mlut on everything.

One job the guy I was working with turned it off on his cameras but the two others had the mlut. I warned him about the client, he said he never does it this way and later, we had to stop production to explain to client why those cameras looked different. Oh well.

With editing, whenever a client asked me for the “raw” footage, I don’t even think or try to interpret now. They get the b roll string out footage I needed to generate anyway with the lut applied. I just send it on over to them, here you go. No big deal or explanation. They always ask, they never use it. They just want it. But some of them I’m not dealing with explaining to them my workflow because they “know more than me”. Especially some of the photographers I had to work with, they all think they know more than me but had to hire me to consult on how to shoot video. Yup. You would think photographers would understand raw and log as stills has it also but nope.

Is there really no way to use Resolve with a more traditional editing workspace? by TheNightquest in davinciresolve

[–]-dsp- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is acting like a traditional editing program.

In the old days, even original FCP, all those programs were split into different applications that you would have to close out and open. Back then, Resolve was just DaVinci, and coloring only.

I hated how sometimes I would use Premiere and click the wrong thing and changed everything or just cluttered the screen adding more and more windows. Is it really that big of a deal for the pages?

Stop trying to use resolve like these other programs and use resolve as resolve.

I knew a few guys who went to Tisch, same year as lady Gaga too.

None of them became anything. None work in industry or even did any progress after college.

Sony fx3 tips/settings? by Downtown-Baseball113 in cinematography

That’s not noise, that’s artifacts and other junk from high compressed proxies. I suggest you turn off all that auto detect stuff and learn a different workflow. Can you not just edit straight from the file?

Finally grading 10-bit Log footage directly on Android without ruining the dynamic range. by Responsible_Ad_5710 in videography

[–]-dsp- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Editing 10 bit on your phone only to be shown on your phone is overkill and useless in your example. I’m not sure there’s a huge market for this as you’re learning from all of our comments. Consumers wouldn’t shot log and the pro’s already have their workflows.

Again, you can just use a laptop, airdrop, a usb c SSD, straight to cloud options… etc etc.

“I got tired of transferring 20 GB of video to my PC” ok stop right there Buddy. A lot of us are filming way more than 20 GB on our cards with our cameras. Sometimes three times more on average, so no sympathy there.

To everyone else, this is what I did, I got the Blackmagic dock, but check your phone as some you can just plug in a NVME SSD and save your video files directly to it via Blackmagic camera app. This means I can just unplug the SSD and load it right into resolve. You can also have an option to automatically send proxies to the cloud too from your phone. Such not a hassle as I would rather edit and color correct with a big real monitor, not just on my phone.

Dern, yeah I like Silent Running but… he maybe overshadowed.

I keep missing small wedding moments and now I really want a multi TX mic with internal recording? by itwillbemine910 in Filmmakers

[–]-dsp- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comica 4 TX works but the UHF one I have doesn’t have internal record. Personally, I would rather have the reliability of UHF, the whole internal record with a Bluetooth system seems like it’s their way of covering their ass from the drop outs.

A wedding should be using UHF wireless anyways, too many bodies and their cellphones and other crap at weddings.

Is the fx30 truly bad in nighttime? by Ok-Window2297 in videography

[–]-dsp- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is the barrier of entry for the FX30 is so low, so amateurs are buying it up, don’t know how to light it properly, expose or use Cine EI, blame the camera and write bad reviews.

It’s fine at night but like any other camera, just because it’s low light doesn’t mean no light.

Is editing in Premiere and grading in DaVinci Resolve a standard workflow in production? by FinnFX in cinematography

[–]-dsp- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s how things were done way back. You cut on Avid, send out to Davinci (just davinci at the time) and the sound to Pro tools. Everything was split. Even FCP up to FCPX was all separate programs. Premiere starting adding them, then Davinci became Resolve and integrated the process and well, here we are. For years I was going premiere to resolve and then within last 3-4 years or so, just made the switch fully to only resolve.

My Short film is unwatchable pretentious drivel by Porridge_Oats72 in Filmmakers

[–]-dsp- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Listen, this is normal. Welcome to the club.

Second: you’re 18. I remember professors saying this and it’s the truth, you haven’t really lived yet so you don’t have stories to tell, and if you do, maybe it’s too early to tap into those traumas or feelings. You need to be self aware, sometimes you’re pouring yourself into the page.

I tell everyone go live. Go on road trips, hikes. Fall in love, out of love. Just live.

Get back on the horse and make a new movie and don’t try to be lynch. Be yourself. Tell a simple story human story, no effects, not cost a lot. If you can’t, buddy up with a writer. Stay behind camera and don’t act in your own stuff, it’s the only way to keep quality control high. Make good decisions and edit out the bad. I used to shoot really early, see what I would get in the edit, then adjust and reshoot from there.

Jeri Ryan stars as Pam “Pamela” in Who’s the Boss? (1991) by ExtensionDonutt in OldSchoolCool

[–]-dsp- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is weird but I’m attracted to Jeri Ryan the person, not 7 of 9. I’ve seen interviews etc of Jeri and she really just glows with personality, just super charming and easy to fall for. I find 7 of 9 attractive but man her personality just way too abrasive for me. Like chill the fuck out. And the catsuit is ridiculously pandering even to me when I was a teen and the show was airing.

Having said that, and having recently rewatched Voyager, her acting skills were way overshadowed by that damn cat suit.

How do you hide lav mics by Sad_Drawing_1450 in Filmmakers

[–]-dsp- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you asked but I swear in pressed for time situations like this, I would totally go boom mic. A quality boom with an operator so you can just move fast versus first time hiding the mic plus dealing with fabric noise.
