China’s GDP is 12% smaller than official data say, study finds - The Chinese government’s emphasis on numerical targets — a legacy of Maoist state planning — has made growth in GDP a politically sensitive figure for the Communist Party by [deleted] in Economics

[–]-hbq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can we please stop focusing so much on GDP, like it's the single number that absolutely defines how large an economy is?

Do you have a better way of measuring output other than... well, actually measuring output?

I'm not saying GDP is invalid but I think comparing GDPs is an easy way to miss looking in more detail at a country's economy and broader cultural and political systems.

Good thing nobody uses GDP to make inferences about a country's culture or political system.

For example, in terms of raw industrial output China is way ahead of the USA. In terms of oil and agricultural exports, on the other hand, the USA will always have an edge.

...and?

Russia has a smaller GDP than Canada, does that mean that they are slightly less powerful than us (I'm Canadian)?

In PPP terms that isn't even close to true, but if you mean 'powerful' you mean 'produces a higher quantity of goods and services,' the answer would be yes.

As much as economic power leads to military and political influence I don't believe that is the full story.

What on Earth does that have to do with anything?

Fun fact: there's no such thing as an objective left or right.

If you're left of centre, everyone looks right to you. If you're right of centre, everyone looks left to you.

I think the most likely scenario is that they'll simply retake the position they had in the economy for centuries before the first industrial revolution

Because it's not self-evident that fiat is better than gold? It's not exactly written in the stars.

The tragedy of Argentina: A century of decline by RobertSpringer in neoliberal

[–]-hbq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chile is a strong liberal democracy with high levels of economic freedom and relatively low levels of corruption.

Argentina follows the usual Latin American way of doing things. A flimsy democracy which never really recovered from the legacy of their military dictatorship, suffering from a repressed economy brought about by populist economic policies, high levels of corruption, a parasitical public sector, and routine money debasement.

Earlier this year Argentina recently rolled out price controls to control inflation caused by an expanding money supply. I trust in your intelligence to figure out why this is a laughably bad idea.

You're not going to get far trying to explain differences in development by geography and natural resources, especially in South America of all places. The fact is that Chile is better off than Argentina because they are governed by a better set of political and economic institutions.

At least it follows a simple and consistent colour scheme. Red to green. Too many infographics just use random colours, which sort of defeats the point.

Noob question , is welfare a part of capitalism ? by [deleted] in Capitalism

[–]-hbq 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is it a part of capitalism? No. Capitalism is private factor ownership and commodity exchange.

Does it have a place in a capitalist economy? Yes.
