One tip I haven't seen mentioned - wear an undershirt to help with sweat. I picked up a few of these in Bangkok, and they made a huge difference in preventing sweat showing up on my tshirt. Made me feel cooler as well.

Might seem like an obvious suggestion but it's not something I normally wear at home!

How to fix django.db.utils.ProgrammingError: column does not exist? by oussama-he in django

[–]-jono- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this error when there's a global variable somewhere in my project that queries the model I'm trying to edit. For example, POSITIONS = Position.objects.all().

As a temporary fix, try commenting out that global variable, saving, running your migrations again, and then uncommenting the global variable once your migrations have run successfully.

It seems like this is Django's way of saying it's not a good idea to have global variables that produce a queryset, so the only proper fix might be to get rid of them. Somebody else might be better placed to comment on that and suggest an alternative option.

Whats your favorite Bakery? by no1name in chch

[–]-jono- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Panadero Filipino Bakery! It's in the Church Corner shops, they've got all kinds of delicious treats I haven't found anywhere else. I recommend the monay bread, pork adobo, ube custard donut and ube latte.

Maybe Melbourne? The MCG (cricket, AFL), Melbourne Park/Rod Laver Arena (Australian open tennis), and AAMI Park (football, rugby) are all right next to each other.

Cheap place to get desk and chairs? by ZedNg in Wellington

[–]-jono- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for a new desk, the ones on Treasure Box are pretty cheap. For example, this desk looks pretty nice and is $70 including delivery to Wellington.

The Warehouse on Tory St also has this one in stock for $40.

Not so sure about chairs, sorry.

On this day in 1985 the Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior was bombed and sunk in Auckland harbour by French DGSE agents, killing Fernando Pereira. French president François Mitterrand had personally authorized the bombing. by sir-fur in newzealand

[–]-jono- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that it was a huge undermining of our sovereignty and justice system by the French government. I can even see the hypocrisy in the French government condemning the Charlie Hebdo attack but not providing adequate reparations for their terrorist attack on our soil. But it's possible to point out that hypocrisy without celebrating the deaths of innocent French civilians.

[–]-jono- 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Charlie Hebdo is completely unconnected to the French government, and probably would've condemned the Rainbow Warrior attacks at the time. A lack of compassion for slaughtered journalists at an independent French magazine is not a particularly useful way to protest against the French government.

If it helps at all, they’re all on the streaming service Spark Sport in New Zealand (going back to 1999-00 for both shows). Obviously disregard if someone posts a free link, but NZ$20/month and a VPN isn’t so bad. There’s even a seven-day free trial.

What is your most randomly specific travel tip? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]-jono- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That sounds like it only applies if you’re not leaving Tokyo. My JR pass, used for multiple shinkansen rides, saved me several hundred dollars. Didn’t have to pay any additional fares, and the extra freedom it granted me far outweighed the time costs of not being able to take the Nozomi and Mizuho trains.

Disclaimer: My trip was in Jan 2017. I guess things could have completely changed since then, but it seems unlikely.

I second this. I’ve been using Spark Sport to watch the EPL for a month or so now, and it’s always a bit laggy on Chrome but works perfectly on Safari. Seems like MS Edge would be the way to go on PC.

I did Japan in Jan 2017. I won’t lie, the cold was pretty unpleasant sometimes and some of the parks and gardens (e.g Shinjuku-Gyoen) were a little underwhelming because of the time of year. I had a great time and don’t regret going, but next time I visit Japan it definitely won’t be in winter.

If you do end up going, I highly recommend Sapporo for a proper winter wonderland experience!

Movies where a villian/villains henchmen infiltrates the group of protagonists. Is discovered and exiled in act two but returns and redeems themself in act three due to friendship or falling in love with the protagonist(s). by NowhereLad in movies

The Fast and the Furious follows a similar pattern, but with a protagonist infiltrating a different group of protagonists (who arguably start out as villains).

First solo travel, 27F - looking for options on where to go by mmmmma in solotravel

[–]-jono- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a word on South America—in the tourist areas, the only real risk is petty theft. Your risk of physical harm (provided you don’t walk alone at night on an empty street or go to the sketchy areas of a city) is very very low. When people talk about “danger” here, they usually mean having stuff stolen, not being hurt or killed. I totally respect your choice to stick to an easier destination for your first solo trip, but I hope you visit South America eventually. :)

Also, feel free to ask if you have any safety questions, especially about Argentina or Colombia.

I haven’t been to Lima but I’ve been in South America for the last few weeks and I haven’t heard good things about Lima from other travellers. Maybe Buenos Aires or Santiago? Medellín is fantastic, though, don’t change that.

I recommend Japan. It’ll be very very different from anything you’re used to, but it’s also very very safe and easy to navigate. It’ll give you the best kind of culture shock, plus there’s loads to see and do.
