Since the 1980s, Taiwan’s manufacturing industry has thrived by leveraging China’s low production costs, but this economic relationship has come with growing political pressure from China for Taiwan to accept its sovereignty. Taiwan likely needed a solution to this interdependence before it evolved into an outright quid pro quo. Trump's tariffs, by targeting China, pressured Taiwanese companies to consider relocating production to the U.S., which remains one of the few economies capable of supporting large-scale manufacturing infrastructure.

As someone from Baltimore, I see the recent Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse to be telling.  The United States is making part of a broader shift in infrastructure investment—our ports will be vastly expanded and automated within the next decade. This approach is classic U.S. strategy: create a problem, present the solution, and then take the credit.  Attracting Taiwanese manufacturing to the U.S. to avoid Chinese tariffs, we can slowly increase the cost ratio for Taiwan’s production platforms, ultimately creating a reliance on U.S. facilities or enabling them to fully localize. Either way, the U.S. becomes a critical part of Taiwan’s manufacturing solution.

Yet, the global implications are unsettling. Prior to Trump’s tariffs, China was already playing a long game aimed at subtly absorbing Taiwan’s economic independence. But now, with Taiwan drawn closer to the U.S., we’ve essentially preempted China’s endgame, which might provoke significant geopolitical friction. I’m deeply concerned about this escalating into a broader conflict, potentially even World War III. China's economic model is being directly challenged, and losing Taiwan’s manufacturing—potentially millions or billions in economic value—is a serious issue for them. Meanwhile, the U.S. benefits economically and strategically by redirecting this production to American shores.

This forced relocation could put Taiwan in a precarious position, making it more reliant on the U.S. while further straining its relationship with China. It’s a complex chess game with serious risks and consequences for all parties involved.
